Faye Oops 6/10/00 - 12/1/11

Yesterday evening, DH (Regan) and I plus our greyhound Celeste helped Faye Oops cross the Rainbow Bridge. For those of you that don’t know, Faye Oops was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on October 14, 2011. She fought hard these past seven weeks, but the cancer won. We were so glad that Celeste was there to help her. Faye Oops has always been terrified of the vet. We bring Celeste for moral support (she loves going to the vets office). As Faye Oops was laying on the comforters in the vets office waiting for the sedation to kick-in, Celeste laid alongside her resting her head on Faye Oops back. She loved her too.

Faye Oops (Santa Fe Oops) came to us as a 10 y/o bounce Memorial Day weekend 2010. We never met her previous owners. We know that she had been in their home for seven years, but was being returned due to divorce. Her previous owners called her Oops. Regan and I thought that was a silly name. We decided to call her Faye, but over time Faye Oops just fit her better in so many ways. Her nicknames were Faye-Faye, Miss Oops, Oopsie-Doodles and Foops. I also called her "Gene Simmons" because she had such a long tongue which she'd stretch out to give kisses.

Regan and I never intended to add a fourth hound to our pack. Unfortunately, no one seemed interested in adopting a 10 y/o black greyhound. Plus, Faye Oops had made up her mind that she was here to stay. She loved having two people again and greyhound sisters. Her greyhound sisters accepted her too. Our first greyhound, Celeste, has always been independent. However, Celeste clicked with Faye Oops. We’d often find them snuggling together. Talk about snuggling – Faye Oops was a master. Not a day went by when she wasn’t snuggling me on the couch or in bed. Faye Oops quickly became my heart dog. I bonded with her unlike any of our other greyhounds. When Regan asked what I wanted for my 38th birthday on November 10, 2010, I told him that I wanted for us to adopt Faye Oops. He agreed. When I got out of the shower that morning, Regan had Faye Oops on the bed with a big bow around her neck. I still remember when we bought Faye Oops her first collar – a Christmas one. She squealed with delight and shook all over when we put it on her. She knew that she was home.

Faye Oops was such a healthy dog (with beautiful teeth too!). I swore that she was going to break records by being the oldest greyhound. She had such a zest for life too. She could be nervous by herself, but shined when she was out with her greyhound sisters especially Celeste. When Faye Oops started limping in early-October, we tried to convince ourselves that it was arthritis even though she never had any indication of arthritis before. X-rays confirmed that it was cancer. Our hearts were broken. We tried to make the best of our time left. Faye Oops even got to go on her first family overnight trip to Greyhounds Rock Fredericksburg on November 12-13. It was bittersweet that it was an event to raise funds for canine cancer. Although I’m not a religious person, I had Faye Oops blessed during the event. It felt right to do that for her.

When we thought it was time to let her go right before Thanksgiving, Faye Oops told us otherwise. She suddenly bounced back to life. I was off work between November 18 and 28. I’m forever grateful that I had that time with Faye Oops. She loved having our family in town and enjoyed lots of turkey. Looking back now, that time was her gift to me. Unfortunately, after the festivities ended and the company left, she started to go downhill again. We could tell she was trying so hard to hold on for us. We told her it was OK to let go.

It’s amazing what an impact a dog can have on you even when you only have them for such a short time. Faye Oops is a one of a kind dog with that one of a kind name. Regan and I will miss you so much. We can only hope that we will see you again over that Rainbow Bridge. Run Free Faye Oops.

Family portrait taken October 8, 2011. Regan pointed out that our hands are held right behind Faye Oops. We found out she had osteo a week later. This is going out with our Christmas cards this year.

Oh my. What a lovely tribute to a very special girl. What a blessing for her to have found such a loving home in the last phase of her life. I wish for all of your sakes it could have been much longer.

I truly believe that you will see her again.
