tbhounds
This is why Dr Couto puts hounds on enalapril and aspirin when he finds protein in the urine of a hound. I always wince when I read here that "my hound has had protein in his urine for years-- don't worry about it".---yikes, I think potential time bomb. If you are finding proteinuria one should check the blood presure, run a urine culture and a protein creatinine ratio (UPC)--a UPC over >.2 should be followed up on. Glad Lazer is eating and starting to feel better- praying you can get his GN controlled--it' is possible with medication and a proper diet. Hugs to you both! Edited to add that I would per your Drs recommendation would start the aspirin asap. Edited August 25, 2011 by tbhounds

Guest Fasave
This thread is bringing back memories of my boy Safari. A lot sounds similar and it all started around age 8. We struggled to get a diagnosis for the first 6 months. Eventually, after a three night icu stay, he came with diagnosis of pln,ple and bid. Early on he did have some thrombembolic episodes. They put him on 1/4 of a baby aspirin. I thought they were trying to pacify me but that amount was confirmed by osu. I did talked to dr. Couto about him early on in the disease and he said blood clots are not common in dogs but they are in greyhounds so most vets don't treat for it. Safari was also on another high blood pressure med and enalypirl, along with prednisone for the ibd. Not sure you are dealing with all these issues but I feel for you and your pup and I hope this information helps.

I find it funny that someone can post about their dog having trouble with NSAIDs and a few dozen people will respond that their dog does just fine. They completely ignore the dangers that are even warned by the maker of the drug because afterall a vet has given them this drug so it must be safe. If you read Lorinda's 8/19 and subsequent updates you will find that Lazer is still alive-he was scheduled to be PTS that day-and improving because of the essential oils and other holistic things she has chosen to do. Just because one doesn't understand or chooses not to educate themselves about something doesn't make it the wrong thing for others to do. Just because one doesn't understand or chooses not to educate themselves about something doesn't make it the wrong thing for others to do. I am new to essential oils and holistic beliefs. so Believe me, I go back and forth about traditional vs holistic and essential oils. I know there is an oil that works better than aspirin, and will not have to go thru the kidney that already is having issues. He is still on the enalipril , Plavix and Deltiazam. with all the oils and herbal supplement for the last week, and has been doing so very well on all of them. Plavix is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ . and obviously they all go thru the kidneys. which i'm trying to heal or at least not aggravate. i think my big goal now will be to find a food he likes that is low protein,, but high quality protein. Lazer has struggled to eat, and usually his "go too" food is Raw hamburger and egg... probably not the best in this case. but he eats! I am reading that PLN dogs can live for a couple years on the right diet and meds. My sweet angel Rascal, once diagnosed, lived only a couple months. he hated the diet and was only happy eating food that aggravated his disease. so i am comparing Lazer to Rascal and am afraid to see what is in front of me! Can anyone give me a length of time? my dog felt good for x days, months, years? Remolacha
I have no idea if this will help or not, but I started Sugar on acupuncture when she started having spinal problems. (big help for that btw) I happened to mention to her acupuncture Dr that she also had heart problems, she had been on Lasix and Enalapril for a couple of years, and had just started Vetmedin. The acupuncturist started giving her a few needles in her "heart" points, and it helped. After a couple of months, she went back for a recheck with her cardiologist, and (per the ultrasound) the enlarged side of her heart had shrunk, enough that he lowered the dose of of her meds So, like I said, I don't know if it would help Lazar or not, but you might talk to an acupuncture vet and see. tbhounds
Fortunately, GH's can live with GN with the proper diet and medications for an extended period of time (please don't confuse GN with chronic renal disease/failure)as opposed to other breeds such as Labs where the disease seems to be more aggressive. There are many kidney diets available and not all commercial--home cooking is a great option. You might want to take a peek at the website www.dogaware.com I would ask Lazer's Dr that if you were going to start the aspirin could you potentially stop the Plavix--I know how expensive it is. Personally, I'm not sure I would go the essential oils myself but, you have had great success so far--how does Lazer's Dr explain that? (Assuming he knows ) Edited 'cause I just can't seem to spell as I age Edited August 25, 2011 by tbhounds

She knows all the oils and herbal supplements i'm giving. she hasn't twitched an eyebrow over it,, but hasn't endorsed it either. the cardiologist knows i am doing holistic supplementation.. thru speaking with my vet, I actually haven't spoken with the cardiologist since our last ultrasound on the 14th. The first ultrasound done no the 10th, we looked at his heart,, but we also looked at all his organs. At that time, he said the kidneys looked perfect. so as long as they keep working , "all" we have to worry about is the protein loss from filtration issues. his specific gravity is normal. BUN and Creatinine normal too. I am hoping we can discontinue the Plavix. the next ultrasound will be very useful,,, keeping my fingers crossed for that one,,, Essential Oils and herbal supplements keep doing your job! i'm counting on it!! greyhead
You sound like you're in very good hands with your vet(s), Lorinda. Needless to say, it's wonderful that Lazer is doing so much better! I don't know if this will help you at all, but we have a dog with some kind of kidney issue that we can't identify. But he leaks a lot of urine when he's on "regular" food, and it stops almost completely on "kidney" food. Having experience of CRF in cats, I hold with those who don't rush to the lowest possible protein right off the bat. So we use Royal Canin's MP (medium protein) food, made a little more interesting with gravy made from canned food and water (l tbs of the former, 1/4 C of the latter, per 1.5 C of food). It's not cheap but he loves it and it works, so... For whatever it's worth.
