The vet has diagnosed Althea with a heart murmur and premature ventricular contractions. the murmur was confirmed by an ekg and she is now at the vet so a canine cardiologist can give her an ultrasound. ill post again when i know more.

Hope all goes well! Our Dalmatian had a heart murmur for a long time and lived to 14.5 yrs. Her heart never gave out in the end.

Good thoughts for you and Althea. Many greyhounds have heart problems and live good, long lives. Hoping Althea's is managable.

Hoping Althea's heart isn't too bad. Sugar had multiple heart problems, and meds kept her comfortable. I lost her at 12 1/2 to kidney failure. Her heart function had actually improved enough to reduce her lasix, I think because her acupuncture vet was giving her a few "heart points" along with the acupuncture for her arthritis.

Miss Althea is ok. The cardiologist said the irregular beat only occurs once in the normal cycle, so she won't need any meds, just an ekg every 6 months. I'm a happy puppy :)

our greyhound group used to participate in a teaching session for vets who were learning new techniques using the ultasound, it was led by dr. petri(sp) who is a well know and respected cardio.who does lots of teaching nationally. as it turn out 3 out of 4 of the older retired racers had cario-myothopy(sp)- leakage at the muscle of one of the ventricals, they were 6-8 years old.(sorry about the spelling- boy is it off). they sent all of us on our merry way and said NOT to worry.initially my vet heard it as an extra heart beat when i first brought her in after adoption, but it did not phase him- it takes a lot to phase my vet.
