Chip's Birthday At The Bridge

Hope it's ok to put a non-houndie rememberance here. My horse, Chip would have been 35 today. I lost him three years ago - almost to the day. I had him from the time he was seven and I , fifteen. He truly raised me. He was with me through high school ups and downs, a wedding, college, careers, and so on. We travelled in competition from Vermont to Florida. He was a true companion and partner. He was a fighter to the end....and making the decision to let him go was made even more difficult by the fact that he fought to overcome what we know was immense pain. My other experiences have been with babies who looked me in the eye and told me it was time....but not Chip. His will was incredible....I've always believed you let them go when they tell you....but had I waited for Chip, I risked having him end up with the horror of his coffin bones rotating through the bottom of his hooves...and the indignity of not being able to stand up - something I could not bear to see in a creature that had spent a lifetime immensely proud of his athletic ability and strength. We joked that he instilled in me the mindset of Nike's slogan - Just Do It - because that is how he approached every fence he jumped. And that was how he was trying to deal with his pain at the end. His vet, who he adored and trusted immensely, guided me to make the decision based on the reality and gravity of the situation. I live hoping each day that somewhere he knows that I had to make that choice and free that beautiful body from pain. And it is only because of the strength that he instilled in me (someone who was an insecure teenager when I met him), that I was able to do that.

Wish I had gotten to know him, Robin. He was truly beautiful. You were both very fortunate to have each other. Every now and then, one of us gets lucky, and a once-in-a-blue-moon, once-in-a-lifetime friend and companion comes along, to teach us, to guide us, to shift our perspective: but, most of all, to share our love and make our hearts that much bigger for the ones who will come after...

Happy Birthday at the Bridge, Chip!

The picture made me cry -- the tribute was beautiful. I never had the opportunity to become a horse person when I was young, we moved too much... and later, I never quite had the courage to truly bond with these awe inspiring, beautiful souls. Horses are magical souls and Chip was a true soulmate. Happy Birthday at the Bridge, Chip --- you are and will forever be beloved.

A beautiful and moving tribute. I understand, we lost our stallion and family member Dollar (Job's Answer HC) to the same disease when he was only 6.....and then there was Barbaro too. Can't help feelin' that all 3 of them are together and having a grand time right now and helping further the research to help other stricken horses.

Happy Birthday Chip!
