Caesar "cv's Dr. Mitty"

This morning I helped my Caesar to the Bridge. It was totally unexpected. Yesterday at noon he was fine. Last night at 5:00 PM he was in an unending seizure loop. This morning the vet said they tried taking him off the IV meds three times and each time he seizured. He said there was just nothing left to do to help my boy, and that mentally he was already gone. I am brokenhearted , but gave him a final gift of love and let him go to the Bridge where he will not have seizures to twist his body and bewilder his brain any longer.

Caesar was my first grey, he opened my heart to these wonderful dogs, and started me on my path that led to 5 of them now.

He was only 6 years old, and has been with me for 4 of those years. He had his first seizure with his foster's, 3 days before he was to come home to me. They asked if I still wanted to take him, and I said "Of course. He's my boy now and I'll deal with it."

I almost lost him to siezures that same year, but a miracle was worked and he came home. He was no longer the funny playful youngster, but he was my sweet Caesar. My quiet man, reserved and self contained, but always wanting to be where he could watch everything that was going on. Over the years, his vet and I worked to get his meds right, and to keep him safe. In the past few months, he seemed to be doing very well, to the point I was thinking of asking if we could drop down a little. Caesar was on the highest dosage of pheno our vet has ever had in his practice and we constantly monitored for kidney and liver problems. He was okay there, but I thought if we could drop the pheno a little, that would be even better. I never got a chance to ask. The monster snuck in yesterday and took over his brain.

Caesar was a Grey's Statesman boy, but not a good racer. That's how I got so lucky to bring him home before he was even two years old. He was a handsome brindle boy, always elegant and dignified. He was my quiet man, always nearby watching everything I did. He would not sleep on the bed, but he would let me sit on the couch with him and cuddle as long as I liked. He wouldn't take treats from my hand, but he would steal them from the table beside me, his long nose sliding along the table edge till he could snap up the treat with his tongue and then look at me like "What? Why are you staring at me like that? I didn't do anything?" He was the first one up in the morning. An alarm clock was not needed in this house. Every morning without fail, Caesar would start barking between 5:30 and 5:45, and not stop until I gave up and got out of bed. His deep bark could make your ears vibrate and there was no stopping him !! My life was structured around his med schedule, and even now, I am sitting here thinking " I have to give Caesar his pills. It's time."

I know I am forgetting things I wanted to say, but my mind is wandering all over right now. Here are some pictures of my sweet man.

I am so sorry Deb :cry1 :cry1 :cry1 This was so sudden, and the right words fail me right now...

I will always remember him from that fourth photo, looking up at the camera. He was so very beautiful and wore such a gentle expression in all the photos I've seen of him. I am glad he is no longer suffering, but he was way too young :(:weep

Holding you in my thoughts. :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug

Oh my, I've been thinking about Caesar since yesterday. While they're all beautiful, his was the face on your signature that I was always drawn to.

Having lost a dog to seizures, I understand how hard it is to watch them suffer, and how helpless you feel when they're suffering, but that doesn't make it any easier to say goodbye. He was a sensitive old soul, and I know you'll miss him deeply.

:f_red Deb, I am so very sorry, it's truly heartbreaking. I was so stunned this morning. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that he knew how very much you loved him, and it was from that love that you gave him that final gift.

God speed handsome boy, run now with all the Angels seizure free, until you and your mom meet again. Please watch over your mom, her heart is broken.

Run free handsome

:weep :weep :weep What a beautiful and soulful boy he was. I am sure that Marlee will miss him so much. He was taken way too young and soon but as I said before, he knew how much you loved him and you will always carry him in your heart knowing that you did every thing you could for him and that you made the greatest sacrifice by letting him go.

Run free sweet Ceaser.
