Thank you all so much for thinking of us and sending your good wishes and prayers and love. I keep crying every time I come into this thread, well, every time I think of him or look at his empty bed, actually. :(

No more news right now. No news is good news, right? I'm going to ring them in the morning to see what sort of night he had and if he's any better. I know they'll ring me if he's worse, so as long as that phone doesn't ring ... :goodluck

Once again, I'm so touched by all the love and good thoughts in this thread. Thank you all. :bighug

I've just spoken to the vet who is taking care of him. He is doing a little better, but isn't eating, and because he hasn't had his Previcox, he is struggling with his arthritis. He is on orthopaedic bedding plus VetBed (the artificial sheepskin stuff) so he should be well padded, but he's confined, of course, so he's probably stiff. They gave him Vetergesic to help with that today.

One thing the vet told me, which I feel is worth passing along. Please don't take this as a 'whatever you do don't take this drug!!' warning, because it's not meant that way at all. In every case, you need to talk with your vet and make the best decision for your own dog. But he did say that while it's not documented, there is some thought that Previcox may predispose dogs to embolisms. So, if you have an elderly dog on Previcox, it may just be worth checking that it's the best choice for them, and that's all I'm going to say.

We will be going to see Jack shortly, and taking him some home-cooked chicken and leaving some frozen dinners with them for him because he's not eating. Tomorrow we'll think about whether to get him seen by the specialist, or if there isn't in fact much to be gained. One thing they haven't done so far is scope his larynx for problems which may be contributing. That's to be considered, and the specialist would be the best place for that since they're used to anaesthetising fragile animals and would give him the best chance.

We still might lose him. I won't keep him alive just for my sake, if he's not going to have a halfway decent quality of life. But oh Lord, will it be hard to let him go. :cry1
