Legs Has Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Sorry to hear this, but hopefully they will be able to successfully treat Legs. It must be frustrating to spend so long looking for an answer. I agree with Diane regarding circulation problems as a possible reason for the licking, and that supplements could help. Are his legs usually cold when you touch them? If circulation is poor, then the legs and feet and even tail will be colder. Massaging can help too, or even better, T-Touch (http://www.ttouch.com/) and T-Touch videos (

). Regarding supplements, sulfur (MSM) is excellent for healing skin wounds and lesions. Edited by grey_dreams

Good thoughts for legs and you Lucy. Heart issues can be very alarming but there are a lot of heart meds these days so hopefully a protocol can be worked out that will help him.

UPDATE:

My head is spinning. Legs saw the specialist today for what I expected to be a consult about an MRI. The second he started listening to his heart, he became very concerned. He immediately took Legs for an EKG and came back and explained what about it was abnormal. He has a pretty severe arrhythmia. So... he will be going back to see a different specialist next tues for all kinds of tests on his heart to hopefully determine the cause.

This guy said he didn't see anything too concerning regarding Legs' neurological system. He said there is a good chance most of him symptoms (exercise intolerance, heat sensitivity, back legs failing) could all be explained by his heart condition. Or, he could have multiple issues going on. He didn't think the heart issue would explain his licking holes into his legs, but possibly his blood isn't flowing properly or something like that. We need to get the heart issue figured out first, then we can see where we are and if we need to revisit getting an MRI or whatever.

He basically said Legs could drop dead at any time, which is pretty terrifying, but at the same time I guess that is always true of any living thing :dunno They talked about hospitalizing him and doing all the testing now, but he's been having these symptoms ever since I adopted him 2 years ago, so I doubt he's going to die this week. I sure hope not anyway :cry1 He is not allowed any exercise whatsoever.

This is all so crazy :ohno How did no vet notice this before?

Anyone know about heart issues in greyhounds? I HATE being so clueless. I can only HOPE that this time this guy knows what he's talking about...

Just finding this post now. I am so sorry you are going through this. I have an almost 10 year old girl who has severe heart issues as you describe. Discovered it this past summer when she kept colapsing on her walk. I was told the same thing about the possibility of her dieing quickly. So far it has been about 5 months since her diagnoses and since the weather has turned cooler she seems to be doing much better. At times she acts like there is nothing wrong.

I made the difficult (for me) decision to let her decide how much exercise she gets. By that I mean I don't keep her from playing in the yard, but walks are very slow and around half a block. I hold my breath when she runs and plays, but she is a dog and she loves it. She also seems to know when enough is enough and will self-limit her playing. She is a very happy girl. I love her and so it is scarey to watch her running and playing, but she would be miserable if she were not able to join in with the others. I hope you and Legs have a lot of time left to share.

I will be praying that Legs condition is manageable. Having gone down the same frustrating path last year, I know how wearing is can be! I don't know how many times I would lament silently, "Just give me a definitive diagnosis so we can all get on with it!" It's so frustrating when you have a dog with symptoms without the test results to back up a diagnosis! Just remember, Legs doesn't have a clue! All he needs to know is that you love him, he has a roof over his head, a comfortable bed and good food. Sending hugs of comfort to you, Lucy. Hang in there! Keep us posted.

Wow, thanks so much everyone. All of your posts mean a lot. I'm heartbroken and scared, but also hopeful that there will be a treatment that can help him :goodluck

Anyway, here's a little bit of sweetness for you. Jabari (brown iggy who is 13.5) is not a big cuddler anymore. But this morning, this is what I found in my bed :heart

Sorry to hear you and Legs are going through this right now. Sounds like you are on the right path now and hopefully things will improve considerably from here on out. Like the others, I hope Legs gets better very soon.

And that picture is very adorable! Thank you for sharing.

Does anyone know if this heart issue could cause excessive thirst? I've noticed Legs drinking what seems like a lot lately, but had attributed it to his being muzzled most of the time and not able to drink as easily. But now I'm wondering if that could be a symptom and a sign that whatever is wrong is getting worse. Thanks.

Have you noticed if he is peeing a lot more than usual too?
