Legs Has Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Recommended Posts

Still plenty of time in HI to make lots of telephone calls! Deep breath.

The only way this is not going to be resolved today is if the cardio Dr took the rest of last month off, which could be very possible. (I had to wait for an appointment with a neuro Dr because he took off the last 6 WEEKS of the year!!!) BUT, the only way to know for sure is to call the Cardio office to see if the report was done and sent to your Vet. If nothing else, they should be able to give you that information.

My vet emailed me. The cardiologist has the test results but has not interpreted them yet. I have no direct contact w/ the cardiologist. So I wait...

Bummer :(

Huh-that's ridiculous, for heavens sake. However, I guess you can interpret this as being good news?

Not sure how it's good news. From what I understood, the cardiologist has the actual box Legs wore, but hasn't read the results yet.

I'm pretty annoyed, to put it mildly. I'm taking Puzzle to the vet today, so at the very least I will be able to talk to her in person and figure out what is going on. I know she's extremely busy, but it's been a ridiculously long time.

I'll start beating the war drums and sending smoke signals. You put on your best war paint! We can't be there in person, but you know we're standing beside you in spirit!

"Busy" is not acceptable. Make that the first order of business. Tell her you and Puzzle will wait while she calls the cardiologist. Plan B: get the name and telephone number of the cardiologist and call them yourself, every day, without fail. Ask for the practice manager, office manager, whomever can get you those results! Ugh! There is something wrong with this picture!!!

Ok guys! Just as I was leaving w/ Puzz the cardio faxed the results to my vet. She just looked it over quickly & said he does have an arrhythmia, BUT the cardio said the symptoms of snapping at his back and then collapsing do not fit :headwall The cardio did recommend meds, which doesn't make sense if he thinks his symptoms doesn't fit... so my vet promised she would call the cardio today to discuss & call me back later. She mentioned having him wear a heart rate monitor for a WEEK, but I don't think I will do that. What is that going to show that the 24 hrs didn't?

Hopefully she will get in contact w/ the cardio today....... ugh :(

thanks tbhounds. I'm pretty confused. The neuro specialist we saw did seem to think that all Legs' symptoms could be from a heart problem. So my vet said she would consult with him as well. I don't think this will EVER be over. Legs will be old & gray by the time anyone diagnoses him! He gets so sad when I have to leave him home all the time :sad1

Could it be that he has irregular atrial fibrillation? A-fib is normally thought of as a constant condition, but in people, it can be intermittent. My dad had it and it was only "caught" twice in a year despite monthly checkups which included an EKG. Wearing the monitor for an extended period of time would increase the odds of catching an intermittent condition.

Has his blood pressure been checked lately?

Did he have any full episodes of the collapse/weakness while he was wearing the 24-hr Holter? I think you mentioned that he started to have some issues during the last walk before you took it off? Since they didn't have you keep an event log, how did the cardiologist know that the arrhythmia didn't coincide with the signs?

If he didn't have any full episodes during the 24-hour period, doing the week-long test might increase the chances of catching an episode. But I would think you'd have to be keeping an event log to help interpret it.

FINALLY an update.

The cardiologist confirms that Legs has an arrhythmia. She also thinks when he exerts himself, his heart beat is changing/something else is going on to cause numbness and weakness in his back end. She wants him to do a trial of Sotalol, which is a beta blocker. She said it will make him drowsy for a couple of days, but then he should feel normal. I am supposed to test him to see if he will still have the episodes while on the medication. If he does, he needs to do the week long test. For that test, I push a button whenever he has an episode so it will only record at that time.

Supposedly the cardio has a lot of experience with greyhounds, so that is reassuring. I am going away this weekend so I am going to start him on the meds on Monday.

Thanks for following along w/ Legs' story. Hopefully we are now on the right track. I'm a bit scared of putting him on such serious medication but my vet said he really shouldn't have any problems other than being extra tired for a few days.

So glad you are finally getting somewhere! Hopefully the transition to the medication goes smoothly. :goodluck

Here's hoping that the meds help. I had intermittent irregular heartbeats and a beta blocker has been remarkably effective at decreasing them, so hopefully they'll help Legs, too.

Finally !!! It's a start. Hope :goodluck:goodluck:goodluck he transitions thru the introduction without a hiccup. Please keep us updated on how he's reacting to the meds.

Lucy, I can't remember all the details of this saga, but has his BP been checked lately?
