Shimmie Has Osteo

We went to the vet on Thurs and got x-rays done on Shimmie and the results came back just like I thought they would. At 1st the vet didn't think it was osteo but did the x-rays and low and behold there it was. She did a film of his neck and it was there too. When she saw it she went ahead and did a chest film and it has started to metastasize in his lungs and in his brachial lymph nodes as well.

He is on Tramadol for now and will start on a NSAID on Monday (had to get off pred 1st). He seems so much worse since his visit... I'm figuring that he is sore from manipulating him to do the x-rays. Yesterday he was sooo uncomfortable I thought it was the end. I haven't had a pup on Tramadol in awhile and although he is resting okay he is really loopy. He is taking 50mg 3 times a day. He is 70lbs now. For those of you with Tramadol experience, how did your puppers 1st react?

I know cancer never comes at a good time but we have to move this week (foreclosure) and this is gonna be tough. At least the new place we are moving to only has 1 step to go outside.

Thanks for listening.

I'm so sorry to hear about the diagnosis, on top of everything else. The Osteo thread here in this section is very informative and supportive, so don't hesitate to post there, too, if you have any questions or just want to vent.

Gabe is on Tramadol twice a day, though we have given a third dose on a few occasions. It doesn't really seem to phase him, but then he's a big hound - 85-86lbs currently.

I am so sorry about Shimmie's diagnosis :(

Regarding the Tramadol, Twiggy was on 50mg 3x/day during her recovery, and it did not seem to have any adverse effects for her (she was 58.5 lb pre-amp, 53.5 after; so not a very big girl).

I know that Tramadol does make a lot of dogs agitated, and I think the reaction is different from dog to dog.

As Valerie said, feel free to join us over in the Osteo thread, and I would also recommend going through the Osteo I, II, and III threads. There is an incredible amount of information, and it really helped me just reading what others have been through with this.

I'm so very sorry - having been through this recently myself with Faye Oops. Do check out the Osteo thread. The folks there are incredibly supportive and knowledgable. I also agree with adding Gabapentin. Get the 100mg capsules and spread them throughout the day. It's a cheap drug and helped Faye Oops more than just the Tramadol and NSAID. Try your best to make the most of Shimmie's final days. It's so hard.

I'm so sorry that Shimmie has been diagnosed with osteo. Our Bee Wiseman was diagnosed with osteo in August. She was on a combination of Tramadol and Gapapentin. Toward the end, she was taking 75mg of Tramadol twice a day and 300mg of Gabapentin three times a day. She did not experience the restlessness from Tramadol that others sometimes describe.

I hope that you have many good days left with Shimmie. :grouphug

I think tomorrow will be Shimmie's Bridge Day. Last night his back end got really weak and today it's just about non-existent. Husband brought him downstairs this morning and I got him outside but he can't hold himself up for more than 30 secs. I have him laying on the couch with me and he is comfortable pain wise. I know he was just diagnosed but the cancer has obviously been here a while since it's already in his lungs. He didn't start to limp or cry out in pain till just recently but that's my Shimmie. He would have been 9 next month but he is still my 3 year old and rides on the short bus.

Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts.

I am so sorry about the diagnosis and very sorry that it may be time for him to leave. I hope the remaining time you have is comfortable. You and Shimmie are in my thoughts.

FedX hasn't had any side effects from the tramadol, but he only got up to 50mg twice a day. we hardly use it now since adding the gabapentin.

Sorry to hear it may be near the end, wishing good thoughts and strength for you all.
