August 16th, 2004, I drove to the Greyhound Adoption Center with my daughters Katie and Kristina along with our 2 dogs Cecily and Felicity to meet a couple of Greyhounds that had been profiled for us. After meeting 4 dogs we were asked who we thought would be the best fit... Kris said " I think my Mom likes the one that looks like a deer." So after a bath, new collar and paperwork signed we were on our way home with not only a new dog but a whole new way of life. My big red dog, had been a stray on the mean streets of Los Angeles , bounced from his first home, had fear of pain issues, was not very social (he had to be turned out with the girls,) and was deathly afraid of children (had 2 bites. ) Copper blossomed in our home with the help of his new sisters and eventually welcomed five new brothers and sisters, countless fosters and boarders. Copper joined us on several treks to Greyhound Gatherings in Solvang, CA and Kanab, UT, countless Greyhound picnics and group walks. In September of 2010, Copper was diagnosed with kidney disease and a heart murmur. This past October, he went into congestive heart failure. The drugs to support his heart wreck havoc on the kidneys. On the night of November 3rd my beautiful baby went into kidney failure. We don't know exactly how old he was, best guess was 11+ so I use the day he came into our lives as his birthday. Here are a few pictures of my boy (click on the picture) ... and a silly video. Copper was our time sheriff and would let you know when it was time to eat and time for cookies. Thanks to Copper, we have been granted membership into the wonderful world of Greyhounds, I've made fantastic friends here at home and across the globe. For that I will be eternally Greytful.
