racindog
7-7-11 UPDATE I was able to spend a few hours with Minny yesterday. He ate 5 hamburgers (1 1/4 lb), a container of yogurt, 3 Fresh Factors and a few pieces of kibble and a little strawberry mooschie. He was a hungry boy. The anti inflammatory they gave him for his left hip that they injured appeared to be working while I was there and he appeared to be comfortable except for the pain of not being able to move. Note: I was there when they went to get him for my visit and guess what they started to do? You got it. They grabbed those hind legs and started to pull and was fixing to strart their "swing" but I was able to stop them!!!!! since I was there to remind them that his hip was now injured too and not to pull on it. I asked them to put up a sign on his cage so others would know and hopefully be compassionate enough not to pull him with it but the tech wouldn't do it- said she didn't know if it was OK with the vet! I asked her to persue it but I think we all know how far it went. See poor Minny can't tell them now "Ouch don't pull me by by leg my hip is hurt" so I was trying to speak for him to protect him from unnecessary pain and possible further injury. But apparently thats too much to ask. Hells bells, if they'd let me I would stay there and clean up after him and care for him with love and compassion instead of injuring him further. I worked in a vet hospital. I know it is messy when they can't get up to relieve themselves. But I would rather be smeared with dog sh-t from top to bottom than injure them by pulling on their legs/hips etc. so I didn't risk getting dirty! It ought to go with the territory. Same thing with moving them. If you are too small/weak to lift up and move a large dog properly without injuring them then get help. Don't just pull and swing and hurt the poor thing. You may not care but perhaps the owner does and the dog sure does. When they are sedated they lack normal muscle tone and those joints are very easily injured. You should know that. Oh well rant over. A word to the wise if your hound is large you better have it noted when they are admitted their hips are fine because if they are down it is highly possible that they won't be fine when the techs get done "moving" them. Anyway I guess it can best be described as kind of like a vegetative state he is in. He just can't move. Sometimes he can move his head and neck some but other times it is as stiff as a board. His eyes do that uncoordinated and moving thing etc. BUT mentally he is 100%. He knows, understands, and is still in possession of his very high intelligence. In fact he communicates with his eyes now even though physically they may not be normal. He doesn't understand why his body won't move. I explained to him but I'm sure its more difficult than we know. Bottom line it was just a devastating siezure-the first of 2-the only ones he ever had-lasted over an hour-and it is believed it just did too much damage. When the test results get back he will be freed from his prison if they confirm the brain tumors/cancer they all think it is. Monday is his 9th birthday so it won't be that day regardless. I have some more of his favorite food (raw meat) for him today. He'll REALLY enjoy it unless his condition has worsened over the night. I called the vet hospital just now-8:15- to find out and request permission for todays visit but vet isn't in and they told me to call back in an hour. I'm not making this stuff up folks. Minny is a champion kisser- he won the kssing contest at the Festival last year and was such a great kisser folks asked for an encore. Part of the reason is that he has always lavished me with kisses. Although it was so difficult for him-like I said sometimes his neck felt like it was froze in position and his tongue was hanging out- well he managed to pull himself together enough to give me not one but THREE champion kisses. Cash was surprisingly improved by yesterday afternoon and she could stand up and motor around a little -with assistance of course- and most importantly she could squat to her satisfaction so she could pee. That was a big deal to us! She had a little trouble with the pooping part of it but the important thing is it all came out so everythings working and its all good. She is on 20mg pred right now (and tramadol and robaxin and pepcid) and her vet (she was lucky and her regular vet who is very good and very compassionate was in town when her incident happenned) said she will be tapering it down but the important thing is she is up moving around and improving! Can never thank you guys enough for your prayers and good thoughts!

I know you have a lot to worry about and bigger things to think about right now, but I hope somewhere down the line you raise holy hell. Personally, I would be going to whatever the state's governing board is about this. I feel sick just reading about it, I can't imagine what you must feel like living through it. BTW, check your bill very carefully. There is no way in hell that I would pay for any of the treatment, meds, etc. from the damage that they did by not caring for poor Minny properly. But my very best wishes go out to you & Minny. He sounds like a wonderful boy. There are 2 e-vets within an hour of where I live, both are like mega corporation type things. The first one sent Slim home with a broken leg one day. The e-vet came into the exam room, stooped down, layed her hand on him for about 20 seconds and exclaimed "I saw you when you got him out of the car. Its his knees. We don't do that so I'll have to give you a referral to someone who does." THAT WAS THE EXTENT OF THE EXAM for the painful non-weight bearing (very obviously) injury that I described in detail. I frankly was agast at this treatment and begged and explained his situation to the ortho specialists she referred him to and they very kindly worked him in with only a 2 week wait instead of the ususal 4-6 for an appointment. When the ortho vet met us in waiting room he said after looking at him for all of 15-20 seconds "Theres nothing the wrong with this dogs knees." About 5 -10 minutes later he told me the leg was fractured. Perhaps if the er vet had actually examined him she would have been able to determine it but then afterall she watched me bring him in from the car so she didn't feel the need to examine him. So he suffered with a broken leg for 2 weeks before getting treatment for it because of the incompetence displayed there. I felt very blessed that further complications had not developed before he received -after 2 weeks-competent care. So that is why I don't use that one. The one where Minny is at is supposed to be the better one of the 2 and I do believe that is true but as you can see it still leaves a lot to be desired. If you live in an area where QUALITY/COMPASSIONATE emergency care is available than just count your lucky stars. But from where I live I honestly don't have much to pick from but even as bad as they are it is better than nothing most of the time. As far as does anyone care-nobody acts like they do that I have seen yet. IMO its a situation that proves the old saying "The wheel might be crooked but its the only wheel in town." There is a 3rd e-clinic an additional 25-30 miles further away that I have always been pleased with which I may use for non-stat emergencies like stitches and stuff- but for the life threatening situations there just isn't any better option available. carronstar
Many continued prayers. You are clearly a nicer person than I am. I would have already made a laminated sign and attached it to the crate, whether they liked it or not. I also agree about fighting any billing for their errors. My first girl, Scarlett, developed a baseball sized blood clot due to an error on a re-stitch surgery. The on-call evet was exceptionally rude when we needed to bring her in late on a Sunday night to address the issue. Once she was released to me, I informed them that I would be bringing her to the office every morning for them to take care of her, and that they would not be billing me for those days. She was in care and rebandaged daily and they didn't charge me. I have to admit that I also raised quite the ruckus about the on-call vets attitude and behavior! Hurt me all you want but hurt my pup and I become quite militant!

I hope you don't think I was being critical of you - it's obvious how much you love your boy. Hurt me all you want but hurt my pup and I become quite militant! I wish you would have been here to inspire me to action!!!! But it gets even "better" listen to this: The vet called me before I left for my visit and told me I would not be allowed to stay very long this time because Minny got upset when I left and cried and bothered the technicians- that the 2 1/2 hours I spent yesterday was too long. I replied that I can't believe you are so hard hearted and uncompassionate that you are going to deprive me of what few precious miunutes we have left together. The vet replied, and I quote directly: "Its not about compassion." I said "Boy, I wish I had that on tape." The conversation went down hill from there if that was possible. I want to add also that I am a certified police officer in 2 states and my testimony is on record as being reliable- it has put people in prison. He actually said that. Well Minny is home with me now!!!!!!! He requires no care that I can't provide him-just nursing, a few meds, and some fluids. He and I are so relieved. We will snuggle up together tonight like always. I guess thats why folks like us have such a bad rep- with us it IS about compassion. He's had all the super special goodies he can eat-he's stuffed and tomorrow I'll be able to cook him a nice scrambled egg breakfast with chopped steak out the wazoo. A good time will be had by all. This is so much better-he is so much happier being home with me-even though he's so wounded- so much better than being in that hospital with people that are mad at him for crying for his mom. Well, I'm going to my boy right now so I'll sign off. We are waiting for 1 more test result to come back. Even though his cancer may be progressive it is certainly the best outcome for him and me to spend our last hours surrounded by love at home. I fostered Minny. After he was adopted I went through the roughest time of my life when my soulmate Slim crossed over. I was in a bad way. Minny got himself kicked out of his home so he could come back to me and take care of me and assume Slim's previous position as pack leader and guardian. It was very difficult for him because it really wasn't his nature to be that way. But he did it. He is the most empathetic and noble being I have ever known. He was there for me. And today I was there for him- to get him home where he belonged. Got to go to my boy. Thank you everybody for your prayers-they are working! Compassion warriors unite!
