DustysMom Posted August 6, 2010 Share Posted August 6, 2010 Dusty aka Ducky, Bunny, DuckBunny left us on the 5th day of our two week vacation. He went downhill very quickly and fortunately we have a very competent dog sitter and a vet who will come to the house. We left on the 21st and Dusty was his "normal" self (suffering from very bad LP and LS). He was still very alert, ate well and had a light in his eyes but we knew he probably couldn't go much beyond the fall. The sitter had to hand feed him on the 3rd morning and after that he wouldn't eat at all. He was very bad on Sunday morning and by evening even worse. DH and I told her to have the vet come and if they both felt it was time, to let him go. I feel so guilty not being here for him (we couldn't have gotten back in time), but the sitter stayed with him and told him how much we loved him (she did too). I wondered if Maggie would be okay as an only dog. (The pet communicator I spoke to about her had told me she would prefer being the only since it was all about her, and in Maggie's mind, it certainly was. I miss my sweet old guy. He was a wonderful boy for the 8 1/2 years he was part of our family and due to him, we adopted two more greys. Run free, sweet boy, like you haven't been able to do for years! racindog Posted August 6, 2010 Share Posted August 6, 2010 I am so sorry Dusty crossed over and I would bet he deliberately waited until you left because he was trying to isolate you from the pain of his passing as best he could. He knew how much you loved him and how painful it would be for you when he crossed over. I am always humbled in the face of such nobility and pure powerful love. I am sure you are right and I do smile to think about him able to run like the wind and feel good again. My deepest sympathy. What a noble and loving hound! He lived a wonderful charmed life with you and Michael. No matter how much time it is never long enough with those like Dusty. I am so sorry....
