BootsyCollins Posted April 6, 2010 Share Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) In 1994, a couple months before I graduated from college, I moved into an apartment with my sister. We had just gotten a great dane puppy and I wanted a cat. A friend of mine that I waited tables with told me about a cat that had just been surrendered to the humane society where she volunteered. The man and his daughter who surrendered him were crying - the daughter had developed an allergy to cats and they were devastated to have to say goodbye. His name was Licorice, after her favorite type of candy, and he was 3 years old. I went in and saw him in the little cage, opened it up and took him out and left with him that day. He taught our great dane some manners, and many dogs who he encountered over the years. Not to mention kids. He has moved so many times with me, and was part of my dowry when I married 5 years ago. Over the past 18 months, he has tolerated much poking and prodding from a well-intentioned and totally cat obsessed toddler. He's had a rough year this year, and this morning he told me that he was ready. He was so calm, and he just slipped away. He has been a part of my life for a very long time, and there is a Likky-shaped hole in my heart now.
