My boy Chico was diagnosed with an enlarged spleen when he was on the table for a dental to remove the last of his teeth when he was 12. We scheduled an ultrasound for a about a week later and the day before the ultrasound he had a partial torsion of the spleen. (He cried out in obvious discomfort). The torsion had corrected itself by the time I drove him to the vet. We scheduled the surgery for their first opening slot a few days later.

When they removed his spleen, it weighed FIVE pounds. I can't remember the scientific name for his diagnosis, but it was essentially the "spontaneous production of blood cells" in the spleen. They kept him for about 24 hours, following an uneventful surgery. When he came home he walked in the door and immediately climbed on the couch to lay down.

Chico recovered easily and had no further health problems until I lost him at age 14 when his lower back failed.

Sending prayers for your Emmy.

OMG, Judy - I so hope it's not cancer. The good thing is they can remove the spleen and if there is only a little in the liver, they can removed only that part that is affected.

Please know your baby girl is in my prayers.

Big hugs to all of you.

We had to take Emmy to the vet today. Looks like there is something going on with her spleen or somewhere in the general vacinity. They took xrays, her spleen is out of position, not to the extent that it could be a tortion though. Of course the x-rays can't tell you any more than that so she has to stay at the vet's Monday and have an ultrasound. The vet said there is a 50-50 chance that this is something very serious (cancer) so if you all could spare some prayers we can sure use them. They did blood work and everything is fine there. We've already lost one pup to cancer of the spleen several years ago so we've been this route before and I'm scared to death.

I know you probably trust your vet, but if the diagnosis comes back positive for cancer, please get a second opinion. I went through this with my collie, and believed everything my vet said. He told me there was a growth on the spleen, liver, etc. He was obvioulsy right, as he showed classic symptoms of cancer in the colon also. So I knew it was true. He was approx. 13 when we lost him.

But.....not 6 mos. later, my grey started having problems, not eating, lethargic, etc. Believe it or not, he diagnosed him with the same cancerous growths on the liver, spleen, bladder. He also said that he had kidney failure. He said that I could go to a specialist to do a more indepth ultrasound and biopsy, but we agreed with my vet that we would not put Navi through treatment, especially if there was already kidney failure. He said that bladder cancer was not an easy cancer to treat, and that the likelihood of survival was very low. I was devasted, and each time he wouldn't eat, I assumed it was near the end. At one point, he was not eating good off and on for 2 weeks and not doing good, and I brought him in to the vet to have bw done once again to see if it was time. Another vet was there filling in, and was puzzled by the diagnosis. He said "this does not look like a dog with cancer to me". He said that there didn't seem to be any kidney failure, bw looked good, etc. and was not convinced Navi had cancer. He told me to go get a second opinion, which we did. He did not have cancer. Can you believe it? If I hadn't gone in and saw this other vet who was on call, I would have never known that my buddy was really ok. I called and talked to the techs at my vet's office. They were elated about Navi being ok. I never once heard from my vet. Hey, everyone is human and can make a mistake, but he could've been a man and called to let me know that he was glad that Navi was ok. We never heard from them again, and needless to say, we moved on to another vet.

Our best wishes that everything will be ok. Navi and I will be thinking of you.

P.S. We never did find out what Navi's problem was. He's doing fine now.
