I'm so very sorry. She was a special little girl. She was too young and left much too soon after Ellie. Godspeed Mercedes.

Peg (Wingit Penny) Wants To Say Hi From Atlanta!
GreyPoopon replied to a topic in Introductions & Biography
Congratulations! Peg is looking very relaxed already. -
Glad she's home. I bet her appetite will return quickly.

I hope she's soon home and whining. With nice clean chompers.

Mine are all crated at night. I used to have them all upstairs with me. Then I got one who didn't want to come upstairs, and every grey added since then has been crated overnight. The last of the originals is now crated too because she can't do the stairs. They're fine with it. Everyone is safe and happy.

It's Probably Nothing, But ...
GreyPoopon replied to Booker_Aye's topic in Health and Medical discussion
Your vet will probably do this, but just in case: check for pain too. Betsy was less enthusiastic about her meals recently--she ate, but not as quickly. I put the bowl higher and she polished the meal off. Bingo: not gut but pain. I wasn't sure if it was her sore shoulder or her tricky neck. It was her neck. -
Cold Laser Therapy For Arthritis
GreyPoopon replied to EnzaFerrari's topic in Health and Medical discussion
Some of my girls have had good results, both for acute problems (Betsy's neck) and more chronic issues (Minnie's knee). We're trying it now for Cal's sinking back end, and I think it's helped a bit already (3rd session today). -
I'm so very sorry. Godspeed Monkey.

I didn't have time to add specific poop stories in my earlier post, but here are a couple involving Jessie: Jessie got to the point where she couldn't always hang on when the urge hit. One day we had no sooner walked into the clinic than she lifted her tail. I picked up the poop. A staffer took the bag and removed the mat for cleaning. It was replaced with a towel. Later the same day, Cal sliced her foot in the yard. On her way into the clinic, she bled all over the towel. We made quite a mess of the clinic that day. After that visit, I started arriving a bit earlier so Jessie could poop before her visits (every 4-5 days). During the last several weeks, Jessie had to go out for her first pee before her morning walk. The walk was the first thing on the agenda, but she just couldn't hang on for the few extra minutes it took to get organized. After a couple of weeks, she started needing to poop then too, which I realized when she dropped a load or two in the living room. So I left her out longer. But the urge to poop didn't hit until a minute or so after she'd peed. By that point, she'd be back on the deck. She couldn't make it back to the potty area. I soon started calling her chosen spot "the poop deck." And one for Betsy: When she first arrived her, Betsy was very tense and not especially concerned about where she pottied on her walks. It took a long time to teach her that the grass was better than the pavement. Now that she's an old bird (14 1/2), she can't always hang on when the urge hits. So sometimes we're walking along happily when I'm jerked to a dead stop to find that Betsy is pooping in the middle of the walkway. Both Betsy and Jessie have also surprised me by pooping when I'm picking up after another dog. Usually I notice. But occasionally I look back after we walk away and realize that I have to go back. Old dogs.

Getting A 2Nd Dog Of The Same Sex And Age
GreyPoopon replied to a topic in Training and Behavior discussion
FWIW, I had 8 girls all born within a year of each other--2 poodles and 6 greys. They were compatible, even companionable. I lost 3 of those within 5 months of each other 3 years ago, and 2 of the remaining more recently. The other three are still here, as are several added after the first batch of losses. My concern is not age/sex but whether the dogs get along. And as greytpups said, there are no guarantees.- 20 replies

It's Probably Nothing, But ...
GreyPoopon replied to Booker_Aye's topic in Health and Medical discussion
I always get concerned when a good eater is off her food. I can suggest lots of ideas (including that maybe her feet bother her more in the morning), but I'd be inclined to take her in for a checkup if I couldn't find a reason fairly quickly. -
Thank you Jan. That was lovely.

I think you have your answer, but I just want to add that I agree. We've had lots of poopal issues around here during the last year or so. When you're 13+, poop happens. Not always where the humans want, and probably not due to pain. Sometimes pee happens too, but so far there have been fewer of those problems here (not counting incontinence, which we have as well). Just part of living with old dogs, especially old dogs with weak back ends.

Great Guidance For Interacting With Dogs

Very well done. Thanks for the link. -
Have one of mine on generic Reactine (not sure what the US equivalent is; active ingredient is Cetirizine Hydrochloride). It does not cause drowsiness.

Any Other Puppies With Constant Diarrhea?
GreyPoopon replied to krissy's topic in Food and dietary discussion
Yup. I see. Not sure that's ever been a real problem here though, since if I've already tried Tylocine and the dog isn't responding, the pathogen load is probably still high. Will certainly review it with my vet though. Might help with future problems.
