  1. Piper was red and white and not in the picture but clear as day I remember him holding that little girl and them waving bye bye to Piper as we left.
  2. That was the farm owners granddaughter...and it wasn't in Abilene now that I think about it but a farm in Western Oklahoma near Altus...the farm owner was named Jim. I went to pick up Piper, a 4 month old puppy with a deformed leg that belonged to a syndicate and was on a lease farm. The story has been shared before but this huge burly man in overalls wrote me a personal check for $50 and with tears in his eyes said "you go buy that puppy some food". It wasn't even his dog. and that was about half a month's lease payment. Believe that was in 2001.
  3. Those pups are all long retired by now. I took that picture many years ago in Abilene, Kansas. ETA - it was in Western Oklahoma near Altus. My bad. Here are Trent Lee puppies but not my picture.
  4. IMO the overuse of crates is the greatest disservice ever done to greyhounds by the adoption community. A small crate alone in a house is a far cry from their living quarters at the track. Is there a way you could baby gate him in the kitchen if you don't want to give him full roam? My hounds have had full roam unless they proved themselves unworthy of it. Maggie the terrier wants to go every time I put on my shoes but I say "not now - soon" and we go for a walk when I get back from errands. There are so few places dogs are welcomed because of liability issues and incidents such as this. http://www.fox4news.com/news/police-searching-for-owner-after-dog-bites-woman-outside-dallas-starbucks There is a huge sign on the door of my Home Depot that says ONLY certified service dogs can enter. You could leave him in the car with windows cracked in very temperate weather... but one person's idea of temperate is not another's...as my friend found out when the police smashed her SUV window and took her dogs..
  5. It doesn't apply to Q but I researched and IMHA in dogs takes the hardest toll on middle age females. My niece the RN said there us a similar pattern with younger female Hispanics and Lupus. If they go in to the hospital very very few ever come out.

  7. I am so very sorry. My first grey, Little Girl, died of the same thing at age 4 but back then it was called Vaccine Induced Hemolitic Anemia....and hers did occur shortly after her shots...but maybe that was a coincidence. We did blood transfusions and vitamin K but she was fine to gone in 48 hours. My heart breaks for you.
  8. Sometimes dogs will eat grass then throw up...but if he's showing no ill effects this time of year some dogs like a bit of fresh salad just like people.
  9. Reminds me of when Buck and I went to look for a lost greyhound in a partially wooded area in East Texas. We got out of the car and about twenty steps in Buck alerted me he smelled something. I was so excited...until he led me straight to the live trap with the McDonald's Filet-O-Fish inside. Their noses do work.
  10. One of my favorite memories is sitting here at the computer and Poodle coming in, putting his feet on my leg and whining thne running back outside. Repeat 4 or 5 times. I said "What;s the matter Lassie? Is Timmy down the well?" and got up to see what he was trying to tell me. He le me to the side of the deck where Rex was calmly munching on the front half of a squirrel. Eep. The little snitch....
  11. Something very similar maybe somewhat in reverse. happened to us at the dog park years ago. There was an established group that sat in a huge circle every day and chatted. I got to know some of them, including a woman with two beautiful silken windhounds who were not involved in the situation that follows),. One day Poodle and walked up to the circle of chairs and five dogs went into him and almost disemboweled him. None of them were large dog I tried to pull him up by his collar but it slipped off. I fell on him to protect him and was bitten many times, including several times in the face by Poodle. We both healed but that was our last visit to the dog park. In my never ending quest to think like a dog my chain of thought is that somehow those dogs had known each other longer and had formed some sort of a pack as their owners also had. We had met all those dogs separately but when we walked to THEIR circle they attacked.
  12. Very true...said the woman who had to dispose of multiple odds and ends of squirrels for many years. Rex was THE squirrel machine.
  13. Depends on the dog. Most of mind would eat any protein but every dog I've had loved fish. I switch between chicken or turkey and salmon of the same food. It was Pro Plan with Buddy and Maggie Eats Nature's Variety grain free as she just really likes it - especially the salmon and sweet potato.variety.
  14. I just used one of those Christmas bells on a satin cord that we all wore during the 90s. Worked well with yorkie that was too little to use the dog door. He picked it up right away.
  15. I don't think that entered anyone's mind on this forum. They've been dealing with me for about 20 years. Hope you find what works for Ruby.
  16. I have personally been prescribed every drug above for my use and about half of them for dogs over 20 years. Depression and anxiety are a fine line to split. Trazadone turned both my sister (R.I.P) and me into zombies but just took the edge of the dogs. As far as antidepressants in people it is most often used as a sleeping aid vs. Paxil, etc.. Antidepressants do take time to build up in the brain and generics are a crapshoot. Ativan is my best anxiety friend and can be used on dogs.
  17. Need people recipes for those marshmallows besides rice krispie treats?
  18. My pitiful schnauzer foster adores Annie's graham cracker bunnies. Both he and the yorkie foster before him adore won ton strips. The ones at .99 only. I put them in soup and salad.
