  1. Read the New Adopters Guide on the Greyhound Friends of NC website. https://www.greyhoundfriends.com/adopt/resources/ And definitely read the Lost Greyhound Emergency booklet. https://www.greyhoundfriends.com/2022/06/lost-greyhound-booklet/ I wrote both of those resources and they are free pdf downloads. I'm a moderator on the Greyhound Amber Alert Facebook page. Join the page before you need it. Currently there are 2 loose greyhounds, put there are also too many of the "never found" ones too. Always have your dog wear a tag collar. Always have it microchipped, make sure the chip is in your name, and update if your phone number changes. My Lost Greyhound Emergency booklet is not only for finding a lost greyhound, but also how to prevent it from happening.
  2. Here's what the Couch Potato ladies said about dealing with humidity: In regards to the cooling vest situation in Florida. We have sold many down there & in fact started out with our own greyhound living in St Pete so we know that really heavy humidity & it's no fun. What we always suggest with the vests when they are going to be used in high humidity is to leave the coat damper than normal when using. This way the coolness will stay for longer. Dunk it in a bucket of iced water & then only wring it out slightly even though it may drip a little. We also suggest carrying a bottle of iced water when you are out on any longer walks as it's an easy on & off to do a quick replenish & your dog will stay cool.
  3. Don, so far we've tried carprofen, adequan, gabapentin, Fresh Factors, and galaprant for Howie's bone on bone elbow pain. My vet with the strong pharmacology background said let's try meloxicam. It's an oldie but a goody and inexpensive. So far it is the only med to show definite improvement in Howie's mobility.
  4. Elizabeth, this is a good cooling coat. I've met the makers at several events and safety is a priority. https://www.etsy.com/shop/CouchPotatoDogKnits?ref=hdr_shop_menu&fbclid=IwAR2UrG7_eJCfGtVbIUWK7WmRzXzevmvHwqrlwmCH4rj39pkA2wK9w0Ucs-4&section_id=21699597
  5. Friends says appears to disappeared due to a possible divorce and it was his wife who did the sewing. Although Houndstown has a FB page, it is out of date. His Etsy shop is closed. GIG's list of vendors has him with James River Greyhounds in VA. There are no collar or harness listings in the JRG shop. I don't know who makes these for Hound-Safe, but she has good stuff, vends at GIG, and is sometimes here on Greytalk. https://www.hound-safe.com/collections/jackets-harnesses Editing to add the Hound-Safe harness are made by Houndstown but are very very short supply and there may not be a re-stock available. Tell your friend that she needs to order soon.
  6. Seeh2o, I'll ask a friend who used to work for him and will let you know.
  7. Read the bio on the vets as you check on each clinic. Several of mine have trained at Ohio State and the NC State veterinarian programs. Asking if they have greyhound experience or many greyhound patients may give you insight too.
  8. Don't rule out the Irish hounds. Many have lived in the homes of their trainers after their race career was over and thus may have already lived with cats. I"m told they are less likely to jump fences, unlike galgos. Many galgo groups require a 6 ft. fence. Also consider any older, returned greyhounds if you want a calmer dog. I've had 15 greyhounds, several Spanish podencos, a galgo, plus a variety of other sighthounds - all with various levels of energy. You may have a wait to get the dog you want, especially for a greyhound. Consider volunteering with the groups to get a better feel on personalities of the dogs and support from the groups.
  9. If allergy testing is suggested I would hold off on that. It's expensive and not always reliable. Your vet can prescribe something (pills or an injection that lasts about 3 months) but ask about just trying Zyrtec first. Have you recently put any fertilizer or weed killer on your lawn? Any chance of an over-spray from a neighbors yard?
  10. Saying goodbye to the beautiful greyhounds and their friends who left us in Jume 2023. As you run with the wind send a caress to wipe our tears. Gone but never forgotten. Loved forever. Run free with those who have gone before you. Greet all those that will follow. Pippin Miss Lily Archie, the kitty Bullet death by flexieash, not a member of GT Stoney Pony, with friends Sweets and Micky They'll always be with us, just slightly beyond the point that we can see with our eyes. In our heart, though, they'll be bright and clear, as they always were.
  11. close encounters of the dental kind... Ellen, you are not allowed to nip Gelsey. Tell her that aunt Ducky says to knock it off and by "it" I don't mean you off the bed or couch. Interesting change in pack dynamics though.
  12. I can't believe it's been a year already.
  13. Although there are no entrance fees to visit anywhere in Smoky Mountains National Park, they now require a parking pass if you will be lingering for more than 15 minutes. Scroll down on this page for Parking Tags Basics https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/fees.htm#11/35.5956/-83.4988
  14. Couch Potato Collection offers a cooling vest. They don't have a dot com page but they are on Etsy and Facebook, or you can contact them via mail: 1cozypup@gmail.com https://www.etsy.com/listing/823077707/cool-vest-wet-wring-wear-no-more-hot?click_key=01efe298eebd46cc923360c1cb0c6e093ace71b0%3A823077707&click_sum=7ce1d32e&ref=shop_home_active_2 https://www.facebook.com/couchpotatocollection/?show_switched_toast=0&show_invite_to_follow=0&show_switched_tooltip=0&show_podcast_settings=0&show_community_review_changes=0&show_community_rollback=0&show_follower_visibility_disclosure=0 The fabric almost feels like a shammy chamois cloth. Water squirted on your dogs back won't work as well to cool him as wetting his belly and inner legs. IIRC, wiping the paw pads with rubbing alcohol cools too. This explains about heat stroke and rhabdomyolsis and tells you what to look out for. Overheating can happen on warm, and not necessarily hot days, too. https://pets.thenest.com/rhabdomyolysis-greyhounds-6571.html

  16. Even though there's at least 6 sub-breeds of podencos I"ve never seen any brindles. Howie continues to be Chicken Little thinking the sky will fall at any moment. We've upped his clomicalm dose and giving it 6 weeks. If it doesn't help vet wants to try prozac next.
  17. Caramel Howie, vanilla Rita, and chocolate NoAh, a sample of assorted podencos.
  18. I have added Lucas' name to the list of Bridge Angels in April 2022 here on Greytalk. He is in good company.
  19. Hopefully this will develop into a treatment for dogs and well as humans. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-04-precision-eye-therapy-dogs-ready.html?fbclid=IwAR3doqbQWqa-0JyYwJNQOvFnRkVd94v8ADFZuGLcffY9E2xKWywY5JLmgcA
  20. The Chatter Whisperer. And of course, my first response was to crank up my speakers.
