I’m wondering why he’s been given antibiotics instead of anti inflammatory medication. Does he have a temperature too? Do they suspect an infection? Presumably the vet checked him over thoroughly for cuts and broken nails or bones. Buddy (also 10) had a swollen toe earlier in the year which caused a limp, but even if we had decided not to walk him, we couldn’t stop his zoomies around the garden, so I would probably keep on walking him as normal but keep a close eye on it. Take him back to the vet if it hasn’t gone down in the next couple of days.

This is too sad. This is the second young dog I’ve heard about passing today. I’m so glad she had a few happy years with you after the start she had. I know you will enjoy the next few days together, even if they are tinged with sadness for you

After 2 1/2 years we still approach our sleeping dog with caution. His sleep startle incidents have decreased with time, but we found he was worse when he was tired or if there were strangers in the house. If she is just growling, she is warning you the only way she can. The first time it happened with us, neither of us remember there being a growl beforehand, but it all happened so quickly, and all of a sudden, we had a snarling dog with ears back and back arched within a few centimetres of my husbands face. It was scary so if she’s growling it’s a fair warning. You’re already too close. While it’s always a very good idea to keep away from a sleeping dog, the air snapping you talked about could be playful. Buddy does this, accompanied by a deep rumbling growl and pawing his own face when he’s being playful. But as a new owner it’s best to observe from a distance until you can interpret what she is trying to communicate better

The behaviour you describe sounds like how our dog is when he thinks we are going out, whether we are or not. He becomes very sweet and playful, but I think it’s more to do with getting attention, or maybe his dog way of enticing you to stay with him - why would you need to leave the house when you have such a cutie pie to entertain you? I’ve never considered it to be a display of hunger. If you’re feeding him the recommended amount and he’s not losing weight, you’re probably feeding him the right amount. At two weeks in, he’s probably exploring his surroundings and maybe just getting a bit more brave

Probably by ignoring him and let him come to you. Two weeks is no time at all so he is getting used to his new home, and now there’s a new person to contend with. His normal routine that he was getting used to has changed a little too I expect with Christmas arriving. Just let him take things at his own pace. His crate is probably providing him with a quiet corner to have a few minutes to himself. Enjoy the privilege when he favours you with his attention and leave him alone when he wants some alone time. And above all, try not to worry. He’s just adjusting to life in your home. Merry Christmas!

He stares at me. He has always done this from the day we got him. Recently my husband has been at home more and he started staring at him too, so I think he is staring to love my husband more and more, which is nice to see. The other thing he does is that he just wants to be close to me. He often greets us at the bottom of the stairs in the morning. If my husband goes downstairs first, Buddy will park himself in front of Dan for cuddles. When I join them, I sit behind Dan, and Buddy will push himself into Dan as if trying to get through him to be closer to me. Poor Dan ends up wedged between the two of us but it makes for a nice morning family huddle!

Hi Laser1 and welcome! I am nowhere near as knowledgeable as many of the people on this forum, being on my first greyhound, who has been with us for two and half years. I can maybe help a little with the peeing - Buddy tends to mark a lot (outside, only once or twice inside), so I don’t really register these short pees very much and probably does 10-15 per walk. He’s not doing it because he needs a wee, he’s doing it because he’s a boy. Not sure if you’re currently working from home, but if so, it’s the perfect time to initiate a schedule for him. Take him into the garden for toilet breaks when you wake up, when you feed him and just before bed as a bare minimum. He will mostly empty out his chambers when he walks. He should be able to last all night without needing a wee (ours does easily). It almost doesn’t matter what your schedule is, as long as you are consistent. have you had him checked for worms? That’s probably your first stop with the diarrhoea before you do anything else. Mine is also on Olewo carrots and it helped him produce firmer poops, although the third on his walks is usually soft/runny - simply because (I think) that it moves through his system too quickly to absorb water. This is our baseline to work from so it sounds like you still need to establish yours before you know what’s normal for Laser and what’s not. Steps - ours also has no interest in going upstairs. As long as your dog doesn’t need to use stairs to exit the house (in case of emergencies) it’s probably not a problem. The only other decision is whether or not you want to share you bedroom (or bed!) with your dog, but if he’s not bothered, and you’re not bothered, let it go. Laser looks like he’s fallen on is feet! Lovely boy!

When we got Buddy, he was on Wainwright salmon and potatoes kibble from Pets At Home, and he had very loose, offensive poop. We moved him over to Royal Canin adult, then Royal Canin senior, and currently he is on Greyhound Trust Chicken food, recommended by HeyRunDog. I am suspicious about fish based foods for Buddy as a spoonful of wet food (fish flavour) resulted in runny bum, and some salmon sticks also gave him issues. Some of them do seem to have very sensitive stomachs and if they can be allergic to chicken and wheat, I’m guessing they can also be allergic to fish. I suppose it’s just a case of try it and see. You’ll know within a few days. Not to worry you but just look out for any blood in his stool which might indicate a more chronic condition like colitis. Fortunately I haven’t had to make a difficult decision like this, but if I were in your shoes now, I would probably be thinking give it a few weeks on the gabapentin and see if he improves with it. If not, I would start asking myself ‘what would I want if I was making this decision for myself?’. I think it’s very personal, and very dependent on your dog, who you know better than anyone else. But ditto as above, you will make the right decision. Although it will never feel as though you’ve had enough time with Spirit, 14 is such a good age, and you’ve given him many happy years. You are in for a treat! We had to to get three samples from three different poos, preferably on three consecutive days, so make sure you’ve got a light and some hand wipes and you’ll be laughing!

Hello! Yes, it’s a very simple recipe Cake: 40ml / 2tbsp vegetable oil (plus extra for greasing the tin) 80g peanut butter 80g honey 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 120g wholemeal flour 50g grated carrot, parsnip or combination of the two Frosting: 90g peanut butter 40g plain yogurt optional doggy biscuits to decorate. I also used carob paste mixed with Philadelphia to write his name, mostly because I really wanted to use the carob paste heat the oven to 180/160 C (fan), lightly grease a 6 inch sandwich tin and line the base with parchment mix: oil, peanut butter, honey, eggs and vanilla in one bowl mix flour and grated carrot in another. Fold the dry mixture into the wet until well combined. Spoon into the sandwich tin and bake for 30 minutes. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes before turning onto a rack mix the frosting ingredients and slather on when the cake is cool. Enjoy!
