  1. Dang... you're right about dog walking rates. Just did a quick Google and found this one... rates are just as you said. http://www.beckyspetcare.com/service/doggy-walks/ Do you have a neighbor that might be able to help for less $$$? I don't have experience with S.A., so I will leave that up to others to give you advice. Just curious if you discussed your work schedule, etc. with your adoption group prior to adopting Luna? When we adopted our first greyhound, we made it clear that we both worked full-time and wouldn't be able to be come home mid-day. We told them that we wanted a very laid-back, confident greyhound that would do well alone. They gave us Celeste. We did crate for about 3-4 months. We'd come home to find her sound asleep - often roaching - in her crate. She was perfect for us and our schedule. We adopted our second greyhound, Darcy, about 7 months later. Darcy might have been the type to have S.A., but has always been fine since we already had Celeste. Good luck!
  2. There was an update that they now expect to have it available this month. "Luitpold has been working closely with the Food and Drug Administration to assure that Adequan® is made available as soon as possible. As a result of these efforts, we have been able to revise our target date for product availability from our original estimate of the first quarter 2014. We now anticipate release of Adequan® products to the market beginning in late August, 2013." http://www.adequan.com/pdf/AHD011AdequanPR_8_1_13_CVM_Luiptold.pdf
  3. My horse has been getting bi-montly Adequan injections for about 1.5 years now. Its made a HUGE difference. My vet is amazed at how well she is doing too. I give the shots myself, but I'd imagine giving shots to a horse is easier than a dog.
  4. Playgroup, Thursday August 15th and future dates. Hello, Playgroup is back to the third Thursday this month -- August 15 @ 8:00PM. Success at scheduling for the third Thursday in the following months has been hit-and-miss. Here's advanced notice of scheduled dates for the next few months so you can mark your calendars: September 19th October 24th November 21st December 19th Skritch a hound and have good day, Kevin and Noel
  5. YES! We adopted Darcy when she was almost 6 y/o. She retired from racing at about 4.5 y/o and then sat in the adoption kennel for almost 1.5 years. She was quiet and timid when we got her. She also had sleep aggression issues. It took years to chip away the layers to the grey she is now. Darcy is now 12.5 y/o. She has a million opinions which she feels compelled to share at ever opportunity, loves getting on furniture (that took over 1.5 years alone), loves playing and is a total snuggle hound.
  6. There is a monthly greyhound playgroup at Frying Pan Park in Herndon. Join the listserv for more info. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/greyhoundplaygroup/ Our grey girls are all in the double digits, so we no longer go. However, its fun for the younger dogs without physical issues.
  7. Thanks for the update! My horse gets bi-weekly Adequan injections. They've made a HUGE difference. I had enough to get me through the end of this year. Its nice to know that I likely won't have to swich her to something else.
  8. What a beautiful tribute to your special girl. I'm glad to have met her at Grapehounds these past two years. She was always so full of spunk. I'm so glad that you were able to have some one-on-one time with her before she crossed the bridge too.
  9. Welcome to GT from Northern Virginia!
  10. LOL! Hey, whatever it takes, right?
  11. So glad for the positive update Christine!
  12. Here is the link to the Wiggles, Whiskers and Wags (WWW) harness - http://www.2houndsdesign.com/1-Freedom-No-Pull-Harness-Medium-and-Large-Breeds-pr-345.html Premier harnesses are available in many pet stores or you can get them from GEM - http://www.gemgreyhounds.net/GEM-Store/category/harnesses-couplers/
  13. We have to walk our grey Celeste using a harness. She has a compressed disc in her neck. If you have a puller, a harness may avoid a future neck injury. I have both the Wiggles, Whiskers and Wags and Premier harnesses - Size Large. Both work fine and are very adjustable to fit even your 80 lbs. boy. No cons that I can think of.
  14. Our grey girls have all been doing well on the BJs Wholesale Club brand all natural chicken and brown rice.
  15. I didn't like the old style of the WWW harnesses with the bulky hardware, but the newer ones that 2Hounds sell are much better. Our girl Celeste has a compressed disc in her neck. We've been walking her in a harness for years now. No problems with either the Premier or WWW.
  16. Agreed x2. Darcy's wattle due to a salivary gland issue is soft and mushy. Its not hard or sensitive. As long as she is eating, drinking and seems OK I don't think an e-vet is needed, but its worthwhile following-up with your regular vet.
  17. My thoughts exactly. Our 12 y/o grey girl Darcy has a sizeable wattle. Its a blocked salivary gland. Our vet gave us a referral to a specialist, but advised us that the likely solution is surgical. We're not going to put Darcy through surgery at her age. It doesn't impact her ability to eat or drink. It doesn't bother her to touch it. As long as it doesn't seem to bother her, we're leaving it alone.
  18. You made the right choice. I'm sure Faye will find a home that is better suited for her. One of our greys, Bonny, was returned for snapping at children. When we've had our young nieces over, Bonny leaves the room. That is her "warning." Our nieces know enough not to follow her and to give her space. I'm guessing the kids in her previous home did not. Our grey, Celeste, is the complete opposite. You can lay on top of her, kids can crawl on her, etc. and the most she'd do is lick your face. If you choose to adopt again, I'm sure you can find the "right" greyhound for your home. I'm pretty sure there is more than one Celeste out there.
  19. I posted an inquiry on the GHWP Facebook page. Here is the response: We have not been informed that Dr. Couto is leaving OSU. He has been away from the hospital, but we hope he will return soon. - Christine
  20. Yes, the horse Adequan is also on back order. My horse gets bi-weekly Adequan injections. Thankfully, my awesome equine vet found me a 10-dose vial to sustain us. I suggest asking your vet about alternatives. Best of luck! Adequan is a great drug and I was completly stressed out when I heard about the shortage.
  21. Beautiful tribute for one of my favorite GreyTalk dogs. RIP Treasure.
  22. We've always gotten the Lyme vaccine for our dogs. Never had any problems with it. Ticks and Lyme disease are pretty prevalent in our area. With that said, I have never gotten the Lyme vaccine for my horse. Some horse owners choose to use the dog vaccine in horses, but there aren't enough studies showing its effective in horses. My equine vet practice does not endorse it. The best prevention against Lyme is to check for ticks regularly and remove them promptly.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You're right, at 14 y/o osteo is not something we should worry about. Damn I hate this disease.
  24. I turned 40 y/o last November. I was 33 y/o when we adopted our first greyhound Celeste.
  25. Hummm... my horse gets bi-weekly Adequan injections. I haven't heard of any shortages here, but it might be worthwhile for me to get another vial now. I get the 10 dose vial for my horse and do the injections myself.
