  1. The only vacations DH and I take these days are to greyhound events where our hound pack is welcome. If that is not possible - for example, we're going to an out-of-state wedding next month - then we prefer to leave our hounds with members of our greyhound adoption group. Since we have four hounds, we divide them into groups of two. I know people who do in-home pet-setting, but I'm weird about having people in my house. Heck, I don't have a cleaning person for that reason. I have never tried a boarding kennel. I just think our dogs are happier being around people in a home environment. They've never had any issues staying with other greyhound owners.
  2. Just seeing this now. Thinking of you and Polly. We've got a house full of seniors too. It's so easy to think the worse when they're not feeling well.
  3. From what I saw, Truman did really well at Grapehounds. Well, except when daddy took Henry for a short walk. Having Truman in the x-pen, behind your booth, with enough distance between other hounds seems to be the way to go.
  4. My barn owners have two boxers. They don't call them boxers for nothin'. Boxers, in general, are overgrown puppies with more energy than I'd ever want in a dog. Other than an obedience class, I don't have any other suggestions.
  5. Four cat safe hounds - two that love playing with stuffies and two that don't touch them.
  6. Second Long Dog Leather. All our dogs have standard leather martingales from here. They have both a regular website and etsy shop. http://www.longdogleather.com
  7. DH and I tend to think we have "easy" dogs - and they are in many ways - but each one has had its challenges when I think about it. I'd like to think my horse Gracie has helped me tremendously too when it comes to my dogs. Handling 1,100 lbs. of chestnut mare has taught me a lot about animal behavior,

RIP Social. My condolences on your loss. Cancer sucks.
  9. Welcome! I'm originally from NY (Suffolk County, Long Island), but have lived in Northern Virginia for the past 20 years. We adopted our first galga Beatrix in October. We got her from SAGE via FBM. She looks a bit like your Zoey too.
  10. Yep. Frying Pan is a VERY busy County park. Plus, the facility charges a fee which gets passed onto attendees. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/fryingpanpark/equest.htm PS - That is me and my horse Gracie jumping under the "Schooling at Frying Pan" at the bottom of the page. We're also in the top slideshow. PSS - The Frying Pan indoor is closed next week. They're putting in brand new footing. YAY!
  11. Good to know. I've never had a mounting issue with any of our dogs or done to any of our dogs, so I really didn't know. The only thing I do know that Beatrix and Celeste are the only two dogs I'd bring to the barn. My barn owner's Boxers and her mother's Aussies are a handful, but those two girls can handle just about any dog.
  12. I'll admit that I'm not up on dog behavior theories, but that could be it. Like I said, I don't have issues with Beatrix and Celeste getting mounted by my barn owner's Boxers. Beatrix is a broodie who doesn't take any crap. Celeste is our resident alpha.
  13. I take Beatrix and Celeste to play with my barn owner's two male Boxers. Neither Boxer has ever tried to mount them.
  14. Much depends on your local laws. In my county, all dogs must be licensed. To get a dog license, I have to have proof of a current rabies vaccination (we get the three year ones).
  15. Apparently I jinxed myself. This is what we came home to yesterday courtesy of Beatrix who we adopted on 10/17/13. Eh, no biggie in the grand scheme of things.
  16. Our first greyhound Celeste was extremely easy from Day 1. She was recently retired and right off the track too - never fostered. Everyone loves Celeste. DH and I joke that our group gave us a super easy one to rope us in. Our others have had a few more challenges, but nothing major. We hit the jackpot with our first galgo Beatrix too.
  17. Yes indeed. Best of luck with your little terrier too.
  18. Just got the news that Beatrix's Lepto titer came back normal. YAY! Hopefully the Denamarin will do the trick to bring Beatrix's liver values back to normal. We have a recheck scheduled for 3/17.
  19. I know this is true of the greyhounds our group gets from the GPA-Wheeling kennel. The "dental" is basically just a quick cleaning.
  20. We got our grey girl Bonny as a 6 y/o bounce. She was already missing a few teeth when we got her. In the 6.5 years we've had her, she has lost another 11 teeth between two dentals. She bounces back from the dentals within a day or two. She has no trouble eating kibble or cookies. Poor Bonny lost the greyhound dental jackpot.
  21. Welcome to GT! We're in Northern VA (Centreville) and have three ex-racing grey girls and adopted our first galga Beatrix from FBM via SAGE in October. Beatrix
  22. Other than the liver, her bloodwork was all normal. We tested for lepto, but our vet didn't suggest any other tests at this time. Considering that we're already up to about $1,500 in vet bills for the past month, we're going to hold off on further tests unless there is a reason we suspect something.
  23. Yep. She was fully vetted and tested for the Mediterranean diseases on 10/14/13 before coming to the US. Our vet did test for lepto - still waiting on those results from Cornell.
  24. UPDATE (and it's GOOD news!) Most recent test had Beatrix's ALT value drop from 400 to 239. All other liver enzymes are in the normal range. Bile acid test came back normal too. Still waiting on results from Leptospirosis test. Vet is putting Beatrix on Denamarin. We'll retest in three weeks.
