  1. It's going to take a few days to get the results. Vet did a super chemistry, bile acid test and is also checking for Leptospirosis.
  2. Beatrix is at the vet now. X-ray showed that she has a smaller than "normal" liver. Vet is doing more blood work and bile acid test. We'll be picking her up in about an hour. Stay tuned.
  3. I pulled out Beatrix's test results from 10/14/13 - right before she was shipped from Spain. Her ALT then was 84. So, this is definitely a new issue. :-(
  4. Original visit on 2/3 was concerning a muscle strain - no other concerns - but vet ran a quick blood screening before prescribing meds. Liver enzymes were elevated (I don't know the #). Vet put Beatrix on Tramadol for the strain. Beatrix isn't on any other meds. Only supplement is Flex 2500 for joints. ETA - Vet wasn't particularly concerned about 2/3 test results. She said that broodies tend to have elevated levels. Beatrix is 7 y/o. The only thing we know for sure about her life in Spain was that she had puppies - probably lots of them. Vet wanted to do a follow-up on 2/17 to check both muscle strain and liver. These are the results from the 2/17 test which vet said were even higher than the 2/3 results. Beatrix had finished the Tramadol several days beforehand. We did not fast before the second CBC was done. In fact, she had breakfast a few hours beforehand. The 2/17 test results were sent to an outside lab. Vet got them back on 2/19 and called us to let us know she was "concerned" and wanted to see her again. Next appointment is scheduled for Sunday. Just trying to educate myself a bit beforehand. Thanks to all of you responding!
  5. No other symptoms. Beatrix acts perfectly normal. Vet only did blood work before giving meds for a muscle strain two weeks ago (now gone). Vet did seem "concerned" though enough to want to see her again. We have an appointment for Sunday. I've never dealt with liver issues in dogs before, so I'm trying to educate myself beforehand.
  6. We took our galga Beatrix in for a routine exam a couple of weeks ago. Our vet took a blood sample and noted that her liver enzyme values were high. She retested on Monday and they actually went up more. I turning to the power of GT to help make sense of what this means, what is "normal" and whether or not we should be concerned, etc. Our vet wants us to bring Beatrix back in this weekend. Test Catalyst_Dx 02-17-14 1:01p ALT Result - 400 Flag - H Normal Range: Low - 10 High - 100 Measure U/L
  7. So glad to read a positive update on Truman. What a scary 24 hours!
  8. Lydia sounds just like our 13 y/o Darcy. Darcy does everything full speed. She has essential nerve tremors which make her legs shake like Elvis, but that doesn't stop her from running up/down stairs. Glad to hear Lydia is going better.
  9. Agh. These teenage girls who don't act their age. Our 13 y/o Darcy goes flying up and down stairs. Scares the bejesus out of me. I like the harness idea. We used a harness to help Faye Oops with stairs when she has osteo.
  10. One of my all time favorite greyhounds. Beautiful Treasure.
  11. We have two seniors on Proin. They've been on it for years. Darcy is about 62# and Bonny is 75#. Each get 50mg daily. Both started off on 25mg. No problems. To the OP, I agree with checking for a UTI first.
  12. We've had our grey girl Darcy for seven years now. She had/has both space and food aggression. It took her over a year to even think about getting on furniture. I don't even recall how long it took for us to really snuggle with her. Now, she sleeps in bed with us. She is good most of the time, but may bark/growl if startled. She still has space and food aggression with other dogs though. Her nickname is Cujo. Will she ever get over her issues? Maybe, Maybe Not. However, she has transformed considerably in her interactions with humans. It just took a really, really long time. The tough ones make it so worthwhile though.
  13. My deepest condolences on the loss of your Jilly Bean. She was - and always will be - a GreyTalk icon.
  14. We have three grey girls and a galgo girl. Our galgo was a broodie. They love, Love, LOVE to pee on top of each others pee. I've never seen any of them - including our broodie - try to cover up another dogs pee. One of our grey girls, Celeste, loves to kick and cover up her pee/poop after going. I think its just to prevent the other dogs from marking over it.
  15. Definitely PM Christine about Sara. Sara was quite a character and lived a long life.
  16. Great news! Christine's Sara (Yankeegreyhound) had a different type of cancer. I can't remember the type, but the amp. removed it and she didn't have any further problems. Sara lived to the ripe old age of 12 y/o (almost 13 y/o). Hoping you have many, many more years with your boy Henry.
  17. Thank you Charlies_Dad. No one should be made to feel bad for returning an animal that isn't a good fit. Yes, those are those that bounce dogs for frivolous reasons, but I would never lump the OP in that category. I hope that once the dust settles, she'll consider adopting another greyhound. Whatever anyone may think of the trainer, she did praise the OP as a dog owner. That is a plus.
  18. DH and I were first-time dog owners when we adopted our first greyhound. We were very specific with out adoption group that we wanted a confident, easy-going dog. That is exactly what we got in Celeste. We recently got our first galgo, Beatrix. We chose her because she was older and described as low-key. DH and I knew we weren't prepared to deal with a young or majorly traumatized galgo. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with knowing and accepting your limits as a dog owner. There are people that enjoy the more challenging and difficult cases. DH and I aren't those people. Years ago, we had to return a cat we adopted after a year. She was simply not fitting in well with our pack. It wasn't good for her, our other animals or us. We cried for days, but when the dust settled, we were all happier. She found a new home and flourished too. Only you can make the decision to return Ami. I wish you well in whatever choice you make.
  19. What a good boy Truman! When our Faye Oops was diagnosed with osteo, Celeste would watch her to make sure she got up the stairs, etc. Its so sweet to watch. Celeste was with Faye Oops every step of the way.
  20. Yes, but perhaps a "difficult" dog isn't the right dog for a first time adopter. We certainly don't want groups turning people off to the breed! Our first greyhound was so easy. We joke that they gave us Celeste first to rope us in.
  21. Ah, OK. I thought you were afraid the adoption agency wouldn't give you another dog if you returned one. In my opinion, your adoption agency failed you. Our group picks out dogs for new adopters for a reason. Our first greyhound was soooo easy. Hope things work out for the best.
  22. If this is the only reason you're considering keeping her, please reconsider. My DH and I had to return a cat we adopted once that was not a good fit for our pack. The adoption group in no way held this against us and later let us adopt two other cats. Our greyhound group has had people return dogs that weren't a good fit and then placed other dogs with them.
  23. Our hound pack all does well on the BJs Wholesale Club Earth's Pride All Natural Chicken & Rice formula.
