Hind End Limp

Recommended Posts

Emma has a limp in the back left leg after she lays on her left side. It goes away with walking. She doesn't have it if she lays on her right side.

So for anyone who had primary osteo in a hind leg, is this what you saw?

It's going on 2 months and she seemed to improve for a couple days after a chiropractor appointment. I haven't done x-rays yet because it'll probably still be negative.

I've only had front end osteo and mets to the back end of a tripod.

Whatcha all think? Should I panic?

I wouldn't panic but I'd get x-rays.

The reason I haven't done x-rays yet is on December 19 when Tanzi was already showing pain, the x-rays were negative. I remember bawling with relief.

She was gone January 19.

I'm probably going straight to a CT scan if this doesn't clear up soon.

Solid plan. (Been there with the false sigh of relief-sucks)

I'm always in favor of just getting the x-rays, but this sounds possibly neurological to me. So I would do the x-rays or scan because you want to know what's going on regardless, but try not to stress too much. If they're clear, you could try Gabapentin.

I am not sure if I am posting this in the right place as I am new to this group.

My greyhound, Dalila will be 10 in a few weeks. She has been limping for a week. She will only put a little weight on her right hind leg, she is mostly dragging it. It seems like she has more trouble in the evening. She has the most trouble laying down and then getting back up. I have felt all over her leg to see if I could feel anything or if she would whimper and nothing. I am not sure what to do?? This may be irrelevant, but about 3 weeks ago I found a pea size hard white lump on her left front leg. Any help would be appreciated!

I took Dalila to the vet today. They said she has a torn knee ligament. She is on Rimydal for two weeks, then goes in for a check up and X-Rays. 😕😕

It’s extremely rare that a gh has a torn cruciate-not that it can’t happen but, it’s rare. I would get the rads done sooner rather than later.

Update #2: I took Dalila in for X-rays 2 weeks ago. I saw a different vet this time that was more thorough than the other. After examining Dalila she felt the problem was ok fact NOT her knee, but her hip. She took X-rays and the only thing the vet saw was a little fluid on her knee and two small spots by her hip. The vet had a radiologist look at them as well and they did not feel the two small dots by her hip were anything. Dalila is now taking Rimydal, 100mg 1x a dayon Rimydal and 200mg Gabapentin 2x a day. I know its only been a few weeks, but shes not showing much improvement. I am not sure what is going on with her or what to do? 😕

Is there a better place to get better rads ?

Thank you for the reply! I can do some research and see if I could find somewhere better.

It would be highly unusual to see hip woes in a gh without a more serious underlying condition. If getting more comprehensive rads done is becoming difficult you might want to see a specialist that has a ct scan on site.

Assuming better xrays still show nothing, she might also do better with a different NSAID. With my hound's chronic toe issue, Rimadyl did not alleviate her limping. We switched to Previcox which has been much more effective. Note that if you do switch, you'll need a few days' "washout" period between NSAIDs. She can safely continue taking the gabapentin though.

Update#3 - SUPER SAD UPDATE

Things were just not getting any better so on Tuesday, I brought Dalila to a different vet to get a second opinion. They reviewed the X-rays and did not see much and then they examined her. She let out a big yelp when they were pushing around her spin. The vet thought, there it is...pinched nerve or disc issue. They went ahead and took new X-rays. They did not see anything out of the ordinary, but wanted to have a specialist look at the X-rays. The new plan was to give her steroids for two weeks and then switch her from Riymadl to Tramdol along with Gabapentin. I received a call Wednesday night and they said the specialist looked at the X-Rays and something small caught her attention near her hip. They asked me to bring her back Thursday night for additional X-rays. And bam just like that a large tumor appeared and it was so big it broke her femur. They said that although she didn't act like she was in much pain, she was in a ton and that I really needed to do the humane euthanasia right then and there. I was shocked as I thought I for sure had some more time with her. She was my best friend for 8 years! I miss her like crazy already. Thank you all for your help.
