When It Rains, It Pours

Last Thursday Zuki left us.

My cat was diagnosed with diabetes two weeks ago. She's getting two insulin injections everyday, and today I got her in for her first glucose curve test.

I took Zariel along because he has a mole that grew on his back leg in just the last month, and yesterday it started bleeding. The vet confirmed it is a melanoma and I had to leave him there for the surgery to remove it. She said that if they take very wide margins, the chance for spreading is very low. We won't know exactly what it is until the pathology report comes in.

I am so grateful for any prayers and well wishes you can send for my beloved babies at the vet today.

Such beautiful critters! I have a very soft spot for Torts and love that just-sucked-a-lemon look a lot of them have, lol. Your Zola is a little darling as is Zariel ~~ gorgeous!

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved Zuki and my thoughts and prayers are with you and hope all will soon be well.

So sorry. Hugs to you.

(If you don't already, buy insulin at Walmart. Much cheaper than anywhere else). I also heard that some cats can be controlled with diet and supplements.

I bought the insulin (glargine, tradename Lantus) at Walgreens, as the vet recommended. It is the human insulin, and enough for a years supply for a cat. What supplements have you heard about? I've done a little searching on this topic, but haven't yet done an in-depth research of it, so if you could point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

Sending good thoughts your way. My foster just had a spot removed from his leg last week and it was pre-cancerous. With good margins, Zariel should do well. Will be thinking of you!.

Wal-mart Novalin-N human insulin is now $17.88. Brand name is almost $70 at Kroger. Syringes are $12.88 per hundred. It's a huge difference and we're closing in on 3 years with it. How many units are you using?

Prayers the margins are clean. You'll get used to giving the shots in no time.

The Lantus (glargine) is a 10-ml bottle of 100 u/ml, and she gets one unit per injection. The bottle is enough for just shy of one year and cost $160 from Walgreens. I've been reading that, at least for cats, Lantus is the one that gives the best possibility for remission, so I don't mind that is was more expensive. Next time I buy a 100-count box of needles though, I probably won't be going back to Walgreens (almost $30 for the box).

The tech called to say Zariel is out of surgery and that he's doing well. I get to talk to the vet later when I go pick up both my babies.

Thanks Pam!

Ok, I don't know about Lantus. I buy Humulin N at Walmart for $25, everywhere else, it was $80. How do you buy a year's supply? I thought they were only sold in viles. The viles are only good for 30-60 days once punctured and if kept refrigerated.

Rehmannia and I know there are other supplements. A holisic vet would be able to help you, It depends on what type of diabetes and if it was caught early. Also some cats can go into remission. Good luck!

Yes, it is a glass vial with a rubber septum. Thanks for the heads-up about the expiration date. The vet only told me to keep it cold and that I could keep using the same bottle. Now I'm going to really check this out to see if it's ok to use past a month or two.

Hmmmm...maybe Lantus is different, but I haven't heard of any Insulin lasting that long. I know that some pet owners push it and use the bottle for 6 months, but they test to make sure it's still working. I think the companies don't guarantee potency after 30 days. I am surprised your vet said that.

We are back from the vet. They did a chest x-ray of Zariel, and his lungs and chest are clear. He has a pretty big chunk out of the back of his leg and a 3.5-inch incision with stiches. The mole was about 0.75 inches, so it seems they got wide margins. Poor baby he is whining softly I am sure it hurts. He has antibiotics and antiinflammatories to take. The pathologist report should arrive in about a week.

Zola is doing well with the Lantus insulin and only needs one shot per day now. We have to retest in 30 days. I asked the vet about the 28-day expiration (as you suggested) that I also found written on the bottle. She said that it is ok to use up to 8 months maximum (provided it is never out of the refrigerator long and a new sterile needle is used each time). The vet has a diabetic cat (George, he lives at the clinic) and she's worked out this protocol with him, and he has gone into remission. I will plan to buy a new bottle in 6 months.

Thanks everyone for your prayers and good thoughts.

That's a lot to deal with. I hope Zariel's surgery goes well and Zola does well on her new regime. They're both gorgeous.
