Good Night, Sweet Goblin. Halloween 2008 Gotcha - 9/22/12

I haven't posted here in years. I'm not sure I even stopped in to announce my Goblin's "gotcha." But I come and read here sometimes, and it makes me smile. So I hope you don't mind me posting this remembrance. I know you'll understand more than most.

Goblin was a small, brindle boy, all ribs and energy and perking ears. He was less than a year old when he came home. We didn't know then that he came to the rescue with a particularly unhealthy group of greys. Nearly all of them are gone already -- none older than six. Goblin, too, was far too young.

But we didn't know that then. We didn't know it for a few, cherished years.

Goblin pranced stiff-legged and tail-whipping with joy. He bounced at feeding time and sprawled for belly rubs and sneaked one foot after another up onto the couch for snuggles. He chattered when I rubbed his ears. Every time he came in from the yard, he made the rounds from me to DH and back again before heading to his bed.

His favorite treats were ice cubes. Nobody could refresh a cocktail without him racing over to take a cube, oh so gently, then zoom away again to munch it.

Over the past few months, his energy waned. He rested on the kitchen rug while we cooked and ate dinner. He barked at the other dogs rather than joining in their play. He slept a little too much, threw up a few too many times, developed a limp. Never above race weight despite our best efforts, he lost even more condition.

But he was happy. Clearly, so very happy.

Until this last week. He declined fast. Lost heart, literally. It was cardiomyopathy.

Last night was rough. I sat up with him so many hours, waiting for the morning that I both dreaded and longed for, when we could set him free.

This morning, he rallied for a little while. Just enough to lift his head and rest it on my knee while I sat cross-legged at his side. He wanted his ears rubbed. I obliged for a long time, while my legs fell asleep and my feet tingled, so glad to give him one more gift before it was time.

Now, there is nothing left but tears and his empty collar.

I am trying not to think of the past few days, but of the past few years instead. There is no comfort in "last times" and "never agains." There is only what is, and what was, and what we will remember.

Godspeed, Little Man. I love you forever.

Mama

With tears, I want to say how sorry I am that you had to say good-bye to your boy. I can feel your pain in your tribute to him, but it also shows so much love. Godspeed Goblin.

I am so very sorry for your loss. We just lost our Snappy this past Wednesday, so I truly understand your pain. I love what you said, though, about remembering his life and your time with him. You are so right! The pain and raw emotion that come with accepting that they are gone are so very strong right now, but it will be the memories of the love shared, walks taken, and goofy Greyhound antics that will remain strong and never fade.

Godspeed, Sweet Goblin. Your illness is gone and you can now run like the wind!

Your tribute is beautiful, you have captured the very essence of a relationship well lived and well loved. I am so very sorry for the Goblin-sized hole in your hearts right now. Someone once told me that remembering someone is a way of keeping them with us, even when they are not. I hope you can find some comfort in that. :grouphug

Godspeed Sweet Goblin. Run like the wind. At the Bridge there is an endless supply of ice cubes. :heartf_yellow
