Blitz 3/28/97 - 6/10/11

After Frazzle passed away, I wanted another senior boy. The first two possibilities I looked at did not pan out for various reasons, so I decided I would try one more time, and if it didn't work out, then it was not meant to be. About that time, someone from We Adopt Greyhounds in CT posted this picture of a 10.5 year old boy looking for a home.

We drove up to Connecticut with our three girls and brought him home. Shortly thereafter, he got sick - vomiting and whatnot, and we took him to a specialty clinic, where it was decided a few days later that the best course of action was exploratory abdominal surgery. His recovery was scary - he spent several days in intensive care on the brink of DIC - and came home to us a few days later with pressure bandages on his legs to keep fluid from accumulating and seeping out through his paws as they had been. He was diagnosed with moderate IBD, based on the tissue samples they had taken. The next several months then became a struggle to get him stabilized, figure out which foods would cause him problems, and get weight back on him.

But get better he did. He taught us that he would get on the couch if we put a blanket down for him, and we taught him the camper was just another big bed. He trained us well - it was very difficult to look into those big brown soulful eyes of his and say no. If you stopped petting him and he wasn't done with you yet, he would throw his paw at you. If he wanted something, he would walk up to us while we on the couch or in bed and just stare at us.

He started slowing down about 18 months ago, and we made adjustments for him as we had made adjustments for Frazzle. The garden cart made a reappearance, and further modifications were made so our boy could ride in comfort on long walks and long days like Dewey and Gettysburg. He didn't always like the cart, but we figured out soon enough that he simply needed to be tired of walking before he would allow himself to be placed in the cart. He was a stubborn and proud boy - he would not accept any help getting into the van until these last few months... and if there was something you were doing to him, he would let you know with his teeth, or at least a sharp grumbling growl and a snap.

The last few months have been a roller coaster of him doing well for a few days, then not so well. He hit a low point of "not so well" a few days ago and we were forced to conclude that it was time, before he hit an even lower point of "not well." So we stayed home with him the past few days, and Dr. Patty came by this afternoon and cried with us as our handsome boy Blitz slipped away.

The passing of such a gentle soul leaves us all nursing sorrow but so very glad that he ended his days loving and being loved.

Godspeed sweet Blitz. If you find that cart at the bridge, I'm sure everyone will understand if you lift your leg on it.
