silverfish
Oh gosh, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Though I hate to throw this into the mix, Renie stood just like that when she had her (finally diagnosed by a specialist at a referral centre) tumour in her spine, and even methadone didn't help the pain. It was fairly low in her neck, almost at her shoulder, and boy, did she scream on moving sometimes. Not the usual GSOD, but a real heartrending, over and over, agonised scream. And she'd shake afterwards and stand just like that. How low did the MRI go for Rocky? Could they have missed something like that? Renie's tumour started almost in her chest, and at first caused her to limp just a little. She had anti-inflammatories, appeared to get better, then worse ... the tumour in her spine was a secondary. Hopefully, Rocky's problem is nothing like that, and is fixable. Sending prayers. Guest KennelMom
I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and stories...it helps me tremendously when I'm visiting with the vet and asking "what about this" or "have you considered that"...As of now, they haven't really ruled anything out yet. And, Robin, that video looks very similar to how Rocky looks when he's doing well. Rocky seems to be doing a lot better tonight...holding his head higher and a little brighter in his eyes. I could hear all the vet techs kissing him goodbye as he passed them in the hallway to the exam room. He is just like his daddy and is *quite* the ladies man. I've been told by more than one vet that's spent time treating him over the years that he's a really neat dog. I was hoping to have an idea what we were dealing with tonight so we would know what we were looking at with respect to a treatment plan...aaaargh! Waiting is awful

kudzu
When these episodes happen does he seem to avoid bending his neck? Looking at the video in one of your updates he is as you said clearly holding his head very low. Yet I also noticed how he seems to look side to side with just a head swivel. At first something just looked quite odd so I played it back & realized it was that he seemed to look side to side with a lot of head swiveling but very little bending of his neck. Could be just the camera angle, because the clip is short or perhaps that is just his way. Just wondering. And does he get a fever with this? I only ask because the odd head-swivel+ little-neck-movement reminded me of something I'd read on Deerhound-L. Here is a PDF from the Deerhound club site. Quite unlikely to be the same thing. Sounds like the DH's cry out more. Then again, if most Deerie's are like my Dear-hound they are real sissies compared to the stoic Greys. Sure hope they can find the cause. My Grey just went in last week for suspected neck pain & sure enough they found a sore spot. One acupuncture treatment later I've not heard a peep from her or seen any sign of stiffness. So rare for these things to be that easy but sure wish it would have been for poor Rocky.

Guest lizmego
Another option is to take Rocky to an acupuncturist veterinarian. We had amazing results with Effee when she around 8 or 9. She had started limping and the acupuncturist/chiropractic veternarian determined that the source of pain was her neck and we hadn't even realized that she wasn't turning her head to the right. After about 3 months of every 2 week treatments, she was good as new. I'm a big believer in reviewing all options. If you're interested, go to this website and see if there are any acupuncturist vets in your area. I did a quick search for SC and there are about 10-15, but don't know where you are in relation to them. Good luck! The Chi Institute
Guest KennelMom
update, post 1 liz...At this point, I'd consider just about anything. If these traditional vets still have no clue after today, I'm willing to give acupuncture a try.

sweetdogs
Best wishes for you & Rocky. I know how frustrating it is to have a dog in pain, spending lots of money & still no answers. I don't know if it will be any consolation, but my old man Faolin had "something" with his back/neck/??? start about 4 years ago. Never found out what it was (MRI came up with nothing major). No pain meds really seemed to help. It eventually healed (maybe?) although it took years to do so. He's doing well & will be 13 1/2 in a few weeks. Again - very best wished. Rocky is adorable.
