Hey guys...sorry I haven't updated. It's been crazy here lately (when isn't it :lol ) As usual, Rocky's episode on Sunday passed and he was fine in the evening. Monday morning I called the vet and we decided to just wait and see what happened. As has happened in the past, Monday evening he had another episode and today he had two. He's pooping and peeing normally. Poop is formed but a tad soft...nothing terribly unusual. Quantity was normal.

The primary vet that's been seeing Rocky on on vacation this week, but the other vet in the practice has seen Rocky before and examined him that last time he was in as well...just as a second 'in house' opinion. So, we're kinda in a holding pattern right now. Though having two episodes today means I'll be calling the vet tomorrow to see if we should go ahead and get the referral to the internist or if they want to see him again...

Rocky saw the internal med doc yesterday and they brought in the ortho surgeon for a consult...they believe the pain is, in fact, in his neck. They recommended an MRI and possible spinal tap and possible myelogram. I dropped him off this morning for his MRI. Hopefully they find something. Potential diagnoses at the top of the list: tumor, some flavor of meningitis or a disc issue. My poor babe is in so much pain, not even tramadol seems to make a big dent in it anymore. This episode isn't waning like they have in the past.

Crap. Praying the MRI shows something useful ... and treatable.

We had a girl with a sore neck from time to time who carried herself like this. (It seemed to come out of nowhere whenever it happened.) The vet gave her pred and it resolved. It would reoccur now and then and we'd repeat the pred route. She never had an MRI though. The vets said it was probably a compressed nerve. It happened less and less and finally it went away for good.

My Bridge Beagle Lily had a back injury that was excrutiating and caused that wierd hunching.....Steroids fixed the problem....We will pray for something like that with pretty non-invasive treatments!! Good luck.

Our regular vet said if we weren't willing to go to the specialist, that steroids would be her next step. Rocky's dad could not tolerate prednisone at all and it's not something I give lightly or as a "let's see what happens." ...this is definitely the more expensive route, but I would feel better knowing what we're treating. Hopefully it's something that's easily treated!

Gosh Heather, I hope they can find the problem and it's an easy fix. Good thoughts for your sweet Rocky.

I hope so too. If Rocky's not allergic to it, pred could work for him. But hopefully the MRI will confirm that he needs pred -- or not. I think we gave prednisolone, not prednisone. Would that make a difference for Rocky, should he need it?

This probably isn't the same issue, but I'm going to throw it out there. Morgan had several episodes where he seemed to "throw his neck out"; for lack of a better term. His posture was very similar. The Vet manipulated him and he wouldn't let her raise his head. We put him on Valium, a muscle relaxer and a pain killer cocktail. It would seem to resolve itself as suddenly as it started. Sometimes it would take less than 24 hours. Other times it would take a week. We never did an MRI since it seemed to fix itself. I kept the meds on hand so we could start them right away when it happened. I think jumping off our patio stairs caused it one time, so we built a ramp for him to use.

Heather, watch this.

Beau had his foot wrapped but that was not what was causing his him to walk like this. We never did find out. But he was on steroids at the the time. We had to wait it out. This was about 18 months ago.
