The Ol' Separation Anxiety & Accidents
SPDoggie replied to a topic in Training and Behavior discussion
just a few thoughts: We have had much help from a DAP diffuser for our newest boy who howled when we were not home... that has stopped. But if we are outside and he inside... or we're behind a shut door-- then we are going to hear it. If your girl is at home, locked in a crate while your roommates are home, I would fully expect her to vocalize and be upset. We have also found much success in feeding the dog anywhere that they have soiled, to show them that that too is a part of their "den" Though I think your hound may be having accidents in her crate due to not feeling well... as it is rare for them to soil their beds. -
General Advice For Novice Grey Owner
SPDoggie replied to busfrsr100's topic in Training and Behavior discussion
I'll reiterate what GeorgeofNE said.... gate him away from the kids and then no one needs to worry. He does not need to be stressed and you do not need to be stressed regarding his behavior! And as others have said, all very normal things of normal dogs--- do not fear he is "a bad dog" You're doing great- 13 replies

New Greyhound Freeze, Hates Going Out.
SPDoggie replied to lrbb's topic in Training and Behavior discussion
You have gotten great advice. But I will just add my commiseration as our first hound, Kingsley, was always nervous outside. He loved being with other dogs... so we used that trick, but even when we got a second hound, he was never great outside.... and yes, that one noisy truck/garbage can/whatever would set him off for days... so, just know I've been there. He also always loved the car--- so we might drive him just a block away, and then walk from there, cause often his biggest hurdle was just leaving the property! Patience and time! (like, a year) You're doing great -
Such a sweet face on a sweet boy with lots of changes to his life. So glad your pack was there for him.

What a sweet face. So sorry for this loss and grief

Could you drive him somewhere, walk him and them put him back in the car to come home? maybe take the, "I don't want to go home" out of the equation? We did this, in reverse with our boy, who would not *leave* our property.. we'd drive down the street and then he'd be fine to walk!

Yup-- one finger has the pill in PB, the other hand has just PB-- hand over the pill and immediately stick the next finger at hit snout so her keeps licking... this has become my go-to pill method

Thinking About Getting A Greyhound/questions

Help! New Dog Absolutely Hates Going Outside
SPDoggie replied to a topic in Training and Behavior discussion
Our first boy hated his crate, and once we figured that out, he was totally fine... so not separation anxiety but crate anxiety! Also, Kingsley was quite scared of noises, so throughout his entire 8 years with us, a big noise outside could set him off from wanting to leave the property for days/weeks. So your hound might be the same way. He'll calm done somewhat in time and exposure, but he could always be less-than-confident outside. -
So sorry for this grief and loss, and thank you for telling this GT community, as we of course, remember Sadie!
-
Once you *know* the area is clean, feed the dog there a few times, as they would not soil where they eat... so that might get it through their brains to not-go-here! Good luck!

Thank you for sharing this super boy with us-- I know he was so thankful to have your home as his last. Will never forget those teephers!

I am unable to post pictures at this moment, but wanted to get this posted, so for now: Ruby was suddenly not well. Was lethargic, breathing hard but shallow and was not interested in food. X-ray showed she had multiple tumors pushing on multiple organs and despite her eyes still being bright, the vet advised that it was better sooner-than-later. So thankful for vets that come to your house, and thankful for my 7 year old daughter who can take all this much-more in-stride than my husband or I. Ruby had a weekend full of love, ground beef and peanut butter and cool evenings in the grass of the back yard. She was toothless this last year or so, and I had taken to calling her, "girl with the tongue!" It made me laugh Thanks for all your sympathies... this is the first time in 11 years that we are now greyhound-less... we will see how long this lasts (not too long) So thankful for this community that I know "gets it"

My prayers to you today

We've had luck with having 2 smears of PB on two fingers... one has the pill-- offer that to dog first then right-away offer the second PB-coated finger so they immediately start in on the next finger of yumminess... whilst swallowing the original gob of PB-coated pill!

Our Kingsley was very scared of the world, but he was a statue-er... so our best option was to walk one-pattern which he could grow accustomed to and do our best to shield him from scary things. We were fortunate in that he did not *have* to be near particularly noisy things, and it he was set-off by a loud truck or blowing-over trash bin, we knew we would have a few days of his wanting to stick close to home. Adding another dog helped some, but he was never a confident dog outside. Yours sounds confident enough that I bet her confidence keeps building over time... and I would second the idea of getting a harness, to assure you can hang on to her and not hurt her if/when she does have a little freak-out.

What To Do With Newish Dog While On Vacation?
SPDoggie replied to GreyBoy's topic in Training and Behavior discussion
We like to have someone come and stay at our house to care for our dog (s) That causes the least disruption to their normal routines, and we feel the least stressed! One of our dogs went to stay with another greyhound family at their house, which was also successful But I would not be comfortable with a kennel-- the noisy environment alone would be stressful -
So sorry for this loss and greif

Was gonna say both of these things, so I will just second what GeorgeofNE said
