  1. I've had Trupanion for years and while the premiums seem a bit on the high side, they have always come through without a problem, even for very large costs. My vet submits claims for me via fax, but on my last visit told me that they were going to start the service whereby Trupanion reimburses them and I only pay the difference, so hopefully that will be used next time. My guess is that the vet is reimbursed via electronic funds transfer pretty promptly. That said, this approach may have limits - for example if you had a large claim, Trupanion might want to see the vet records first. All that said, I just had both my hounds in for smallish issues, and while the claims were submitted via fax so I paid my vet the full amount, they were processed the same day. Again, these were in the hundreds, not thousands of dollars - I am sure there are thresholds for the amount of information / documentation that is required to process a claim, and it's hard to argue with that. Trupanion will also allow a proposed treatment plan to be submitted in advance, so they can tell you what portion they will cover. Healthy Paws is not in Canada, so no experience there.

I knew her only through your beautiful photos. I am so very sorry for the loss of your special girl.
  10. Strongly second the recommendation to see a veterinary ophthalmologist. You probably need to see your vet first anyway, to get a referral, but be firm about a referral. A specialist sees more things in their area of training, and more often, than a general practitioner, so a referral is not a knock against your vet, but more like bringing in additional resources for a situation that calls for it.
  11. Agree with Neylasmom that a lot depends on what stage Ruby is at. I had my girl on Royal Canin kibble which looked like the best of the bunch among prescription diets at the time (a few years ago). I supplemented with a kidney friendly meatloaf that also had vegetables and called for ground toasted egg shells as a phosphorus binder. Prescription diets get a bad rap, but sometimes are the best alternative unless you are willing to do a lot of research and commit to making food at home. I also had her on Azodyl - a clinical trial showed it had no effect, but I figured can't hurt, might help. Your vet may also recommend a med to reduce blood pressure, again, depending on what stage she's at. I lost lost my girl to osteo, not kidney disease.
  12. What a wonderful success story! Congratulations to all involved, and especially to Lilly!
  13. I am currently using the Micro-Emulsion spray from this line on Vonnie, whose skin was flaking along her spine. It's great stuff.
  14. My heart breaks for you and Bosco. Godspeed to a very special boy.
  15. So sad to see Sammie's name here. Hugs to all of you.
  16. Well, sounds as good as it can. Hopefully he eats for you and then goes back to sleep so you can both get some rest tonight. Hope it's nothing but healing from here!
  17. Toni, no experience, but you and Morrie are in my thoughts and prayers.
  18. Godspeed to a deeply loved hound who was meant to find his way to you.
