It's pretty normal for their poops to be firm in the morning and softer by the end of the day, but have you had a vet check to rule out anything medical? Is she scratching or biting at her tail or feet, or anything else to indicate an allergy? It would be helpful to know how much and how often you're feeding her as well. Also, how long are you allowing for her to adjust to a new food before switching again? Lots of people here swear by plain ol' Iams ProActive Health (aka the green bag); it contains beet pulp, which seems to help firm up poop. Some of the fancier, more expensive brands have not been as successful, so try not to get too hung up on organic/holistic/etc. and just find something that works. My hound has done pretty well on just about everything we've given her, so I'm lucky in this department. It's a several-month-long process of trial and error for many hound owners, but you'll find your miracle food eventually! I am sure you'll get lots of responses from people who have been there, done that.

My long-time grey-owning vet recommended lamb ears (they're not very big but Sweep loves 'em) and beef trachea/moo tubes specifically for their dental benefits. She recommended against pig ears because of the fat content.

I agree with all of the above. It sounds like CJ has a fantastic life. That said, I work from home too and struggle with some of the same feelings sometimes, especially because greys are so skilled at making sad eyes at us. (My human interpretation: "Why are you staring at that screen instead of petting me?" Actual meaning: "Zzzzzz.") As Susan/GeorgeOfNE said, if CJ were really bored or underexercised, he'd make his feelings clear in some (probably destructive) way that you couldn't miss.

Lots of us are fans of the Zoom Groom. Aside from daily brushing, some good things for teeth are bully sticks, lamb ears, and beef trachea (aka moo tubes). My vet, who has 6 or 7 greys of her own, recommended the latter two when we first got Sweep and they've really helped. I buy all three items locally (if you have one near you, Trader Joe's has good deals on bully sticks and they're made in the USA), but you can also order them at http://www.bestbullysticks.com/. We also use Tropiclean, a water additive you can usually find at Petsmart, Petco, Amazon, etc.

Sweep was fostered with another grey for five MONTHS, and they were pretty good buddies from what I understand. However, she has done fine here as an only for the past year and a half (I am not counting the two cats, because I am sure she wouldn't ). I do work from home, which made the transition easier, but I still believe on the whole they are pretty resilient dogs after an initial adjustment period. We talk about getting another grey, but it would be mostly for us: I think she is fine either way. Is the foster close enough that you could arrange some play dates with the other dog periodically? ETA: I forgot to say congrats on your new addition, and I do hope you'll post again to formally introduce him—with lots of pictures!

My cat-safe grey loves nom-nom-nomming on her stuffies to make 'em talk. She'll also toss them around a bit, but she doesn't destroy them.

What a beauty she was.

No advice either, just loads of sympathy. I have two cats as well and always said "they were here first, so they take priority if things don't work out" (not to mention one is almost 11, so he's not going anywhere). It would devastate me to see one of them being picked up and shaken like you describe. Having had Sweep a year and a half now, though, I also can't fathom how hard it would be to rehome her. I hope someone with more experience will be able to offer you some encouragement as you face this decision.
