  1. I'll leave the weight discussion to those with far more experience, but I just wanted to say she's gorgeous and her ears are fantastic!
  2. Thanks; that's what I was thinking too. Ugh, I am already bracing myself for the GSOD when they cut it.
  3. Glad for this thread! Sweep did the same thing tonight (sorry if it's huge; posting from phone): It sticks out almost sideways when she is standing. I got the bleeding stopped with styptic powder (which she promptly licked off--should I be worried about that?) and put some colloidal silver gel on it, but she won't tolerate a bandage of any kind. She didn't make a peep when it happened but keeps catching it on her bedding and yelping. Poor baby; I expect a restless night ahead. I knew something was bound to happen sooner or later with her having a new yard of her very own! Vet first thing tomorrow.
  4. So the black is on the gum, not the tooth? And you're sure it's something new versus just normal pigmentation that's always been there? (Sweep has always had some black pigmentation on her gums, but her teeth are great; the vet's never commented on anything unusual gumwise.) Re: chews, my vet swears by beef tracheas and lamb ears; she owns 7 greys and tries to avoid doing dentals on them. I buy mine locally, but I think bestbullysticks.com carries them both. Anything like that (i.e., mostly cartilage) should be effective without carrying a risk of broken or cracked teeth. Himalayan dog chews are great for heavy chewers and have a limited ingredient list, but they are quite hard.
  5. I'm so sorry for your loss. Rest well, beautiful Cleo.
  6. Agree that it sounds like a lot of food. My 60 lb girl is fed a heaping 1c of Blue Buffalo chicken and brown rice 2x daily, plus a Kong stuffed with another 1/2 c and add-ins (yogurt, peanut butter, applesauce, and/or cottage cheese). She almost always poops 3x a day (firm morning and midday, softer in the evening).
  7. I am so sorry for your loss. Rest well, Queen.
  8. Welcome, and congrats! Hardy is very handsome. He and my girl Sweep share a sire, Kiowa Sweet Trey (along with many other hounds on Greytalk—KST was a busy guy!). Wishing everyone a smooth adjustment.
  9. Oh no no no. I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Seamie. Rest well, handsome; you will be missed by so many.
  10. I am so sorry for your loss. What a lovely tribute to her. Rest well, Lady.
  11. Sweep's a grazer too. She's been in full-on goat mode since spring arrived and never throws it up, although she might gag a little because it tickles her throat. I think she just enjoys the taste. I do wish she'd chew it better because it's not much fun standing on the sidewalk of a busy street with a baggie-gloved hand pulling a long blade of grass out of your dog's butt! (You've been warned. ) When she actually is feeling unwell, her behavior is much more frantic; she heads straight for the pots of grass I keep indoors for the cats and basically uproots them.
  12. So very sorry for your loss. Rest well, sweet Jackie.
  13. I'm so sorry for your loss. Rest well, Social.
  14. We have poop, people! She held out a few hours longer than normal, but the yard has officially been broken in. We dumped the baggie from her morning walk into the back corner and apparently that did the trick, so thank you for the tip.
  15. Thank you for the responses! Going to try "seasoning the yard" ( ) for her tomorrow; that makes perfect sense.

    Pudge

I am so very sorry for your loss. Rest well, Pudge. Seeing your name always made me smile...until today.
  17. We moved from a townhouse to a single family home with a small yard about two weeks ago, and I'm happy to report that both hound and cats seem to have adjusted pretty quickly and without drama. However, we got our fence finished a few days ago and so far Sweep won't poop in the yard. She'll pee, no problem, and has already established her racetrack (which still gives me a bit of a heart attack when she rounds tight corners and tears across the concrete patio!). But we have to leash her up and walk her to get her to poop. I never intended for the new yard to replace daily walks, so it's hardly a major crisis, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any input on why this might be and what we might do to encourage her to go. Thanks!
  18. So sorry for your loss. Rest well, Moose.
  19. There's a vegetarian version of Missing Link for dogs with food sensitivities that also includes probiotics—might help with the gas if you haven't tried it.
  20. I am so sorry for you and Snow. Rest well, Scotch.
