  1. the cut should be healed, did your vet prescribe anything for the pulled muscle? this sounds a tad strange. with his lack of exercise it should be healed, or healing. did he come this way? maybe a second opinion and or revisit w/ your vet and ask for an activity schedule. something is off -
  2. you have a baby- he's young, going thru adolescence and needs lots and lots of exercise. is he getting that? our adolescent sight hounds rip around the yard like mad-dogs, play, run and still have the energy for a good long walk. did your adoption group inform you about a young dog's physical needs? structure & exercise will be your best friend. do you get him out for a good run and long walk early in the day to tire him out for a couple of hours? talk to your adoption group if you are unable to really exercise this pup. i hate to sound abrupt, but a young dog develops S.A. and other traits when not exhausted and they have a ton of energy cooped up inside. kennel dogs are out and running(with or next to another dog) for extended periods of time outside. do you have a dog door? but what goes out can come in- such as other critters~ but work with knowledgable trainers and your group for best results. remember a good dog is a tired dog- tired after exercise(your best friend)
  3. harness but a trainer will be your best bet. for this i would do some one on one trainings. this way you can share what ever you have been doing and get a new focus. don't pull your hair out trying to figure this out. a professional will save you lots of time and frustration. best of luck~
  4. i'm asking for a friend who is researching the amputation of a middle front toe. has anyone out there had that toe amputated on their GH? if so, how did if affect their running ability? her dog's corn was "removed" by a vet who just shaved the pad down. didn't remove the corn- just the surface. now a hard callous has formed which hamper's her movement. all of this due to not being able to get into her long term vet- covid complications. thanks in advance andrea asking for mavis
  5. oh yes the steroids will increase appetite and thirst. always remember that.
  6. the late great willie wonka had L.P. during the summer he always had a fan near his crate- no dog bed for him, it was too hot. i stopped taking him anywhere- he always had a chilly spot at the vet's boarding facility always waiting for him, an easy dog to board. he scared us a couple of times. one humid night we thought that was it- he pulled thru- his personal fan was the answer. no meds nor tie back. willie lived to 15!
  7. washable cover keep the price down something you can add more stuffing to just look for a durable material(not a nylon backed fleece) since GH do nest and will shred it.
  8. sounds like your vet knows what he/she is doing. stick with their protocol. the local adoption group has a horrible experience w/ one of the hook/protocols. the dog was allergic to one of the chemicals and has suffered irreversible damage to eyes and kidneys( talk about and expensive worming- over $6k!). my motto is less is more- don't go for the big guns unless one really needs to. the worming/antigen test should reveal everything. good luck and don't go crazy. monthly interceptor helps as well.
  9. try clicker training. i thought there was something wrong w/ my first GH. she did nothing- until i gave her a job. they have been working dogs on a schedule. retirement ain't easy when one is used to punching a clock. our first woke up, had a job and excelled at everything after that.
  10. check out the calorie count on the pro plan sensitive skin. the focus varieties tend to have higher calories- not necessary. purina one might have something to fit your dog's need.
  11. oh, just wanted to add, a raw feeder i know highly recommended raw green tripe- she used that on her kidney damaged dog. well- my dog's #s went thru the ceiling on it. so, don't waste your money.
  12. sorry to hear this. when jamie had lymphoma i did extensive research on canine cancer studies. here is the link nationally to various treatments for numerous type of cancer-http://vetcancersociety.org/pet-owners/clinical-trials/ cornell has an interesting program, but he didn't qualify since he was on antibiotics for what we originally thought was lyme. we lost both of our female greyhounds to osteo. emily lasted 6 weeks after diagnosis, the pain was unbearable. annie showed no signs what so ever- jumped off the bed onto a rug(padded landing) and had a "starburst" configuration in the break. this is how it's been presenting itself vs. the limp etc. all cancers are horrible.
  13. i have had 3 dogs on rice and chicken, a minimal amount of chicken to give the rice flavor and have saved a bundle not purchasing RX food. cook the rice w/ raw chicken parts in it, debone the chicken and chop, mix in and it's totally irresistible. when felix was really on the decline from kidney failure we added prednisone to his daily regime. it enhanced his appetite and improved his quality of life.
  14. don't hit your head against the wall- salukis are really lousy eaters. i had salukis for 18 years. purina pro plan sport 30/20(30 protein/20 fat) is ridiculously fattening and a very good food. the beef is 507 calories a cup, chicken 484 calories per cup, salmon is a whopping 527 calories per cup. of course chewy sells it and you can purchase 50 lb bags. for a saluki- feed 2x daily, maximum. put it down, wait 10 min. max and pick it up. generally saluki breeders feed once a day- late in the day so they are hungry. i never added anything to their kibble since they sucked the juice off the kibble and spit it out- yup, that's a saluki in a nut shell. traditionally they are very thin, not as thin as an azawark, but thin.
  15. pm me if you are interested. i have a lightweight irish muzzle for sale- pink strap
  16. moleskin or rolls of insulating foam sold at homedepot. we had some left over from insulating around the garage door. it's 1.5" wide and has adhesive on one side. it made the muzzle very comfy and sured up the fit. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-3-4-in-x-7-16-in-x-10-ft-Black-High-Density-Rubber-Foam-Weatherstrip-Tape-R734H/100047977 i'm sure you local hardware store has something like this.
  17. find a school who teaches with clicker training. it's all positive reinforcement and i was shocked how my 1st GH, who sounds like your dog, responded. it was as if someone turned on a light switch. we started w/ basic clicker and once emily found out she had a job she was a happy camper- she had something to do. emily had raced 168 times in her life and was hauled all over the country. so, life in a home was outright boring. we went straight into traditional training and she was quickly certified by 2 organizations as a therapy dog and had her Canine Good Citizenship title. She rarely played with toys- but was a great therapy dog and excelled at meet and greets.
  18. when lettuce was totally off food- her breeder gave her a combo of liver, ground beef, goat's milk and slowly added puppy chow to the mixture. it got her going. i'm not a fan of canned food as you can see reading this and my other post. my friend swears by the stuff one gets in the refrigerator at supermarket or pet store that comes in long tubes and you slice it. i would give that a try.
  19. cook your own chicken and rice. if you have a pressure cooker or what ever the new gizmos are called- quarter the chicken, use a good rice(i like medium grain japanese rice) and cook away. debone and reheat for a tad in the microwave. small small portions- also white bread toasted is mmmm....sweet and the old ones seem to like it- as well as cheerios and rice crispys. what we will do for our dogs- but it's worth every minute of slave labor!
  20. willie wonka (welsh terrier) was diagnosed around age 9. the rare steroid shot helped immensely. he did end up changing his gait but still ran after that soccer ball w/ LS and cataracts until his death at 15. i'm not one for surgery unless it's a life threatening condition. LS isn't. felix did really well w/ adequan injections. knowing about them now i would have opted for them vs. steroids. but the dog lived and was active until 15 when he was living a nightmare due to senility. do look into adequan.
  21. my neighbor's dog, flat coated retriever, had ACL surgery. he recovered beautifully- it was a PITA since they live in a 2 family house with 2 huge flights of steps and the dog weighed 80+ lbs. but they carried him up and down and he was back to his crazy self in no time! another friend opted not to, their dog lived to 15 with a good gimp and limited mobility. would i have the surgery done on my pup- YES!
  22. take a deep breath. you did the right thing and are smart about using a muzzle- kudos! my dogs have killed feral cats that jumped the fence and entered our yard. training him not to lunge out when you walk is what you should aim for. a good obedience class with all size dogs will do wonders, especially if you have an experienced trainer. do stick w/ a group situation so his actions can be observed and corrected by a professional. the class will also boost YOUR confidence and give your tools for control. now exhale- and another deep breath. that dog was not legal- no collar, no leash, no owner and it was asking for trouble. it could have been a car or another dog-
  23. i currently have a Lassie- who i call Mango Lassie since every time i stood at the door and said, "Lassie! Lassie come home!!" i cracked up and visualized Timmy or his mom. Lass is a boy anyway. Mango Lassie is as delicious as the drink so it works. another jewel tone collar, shucks they stopped making the jewel tone with hearts- but this one looked great on Annie as well https://www.lupinepet.com/store/original-designs-martingale-collar this was my favorite- https://www.amazon.com/LupinePet-Originals-Heart-Martingale-Collar/dp/B00DA49G80?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00DA49G80&pd_rd_r=f1a33285-f480-45f7-8462-a3a11a59405a&pd_rd_w=PsNX7&pd_rd_wg=fS3ly&pf_rd_p=2dbf6b01-59ac-4489-80f4-80c8be124155&pf_rd_r=2VFTQ6809F3PY6M7S33Q
  24. CONGRATS!!! that gable dodge sure does throw his genes- she's a dead ringer for my late sweet sweet annie ! and i'm sure she will be as delicious~ what's her weight? just curious. enjoy- and jewel tone collars seemed to work best on the red fawns who took up residence here! for annie her go to collar was https://www.lupinepet.com/store/original-designs-martingale-collar oh and my 2 cents- i like the name listed above- dyani- another ani? a dy?
