  1. steroids are wonderful. they have been bad mouthed for abuse, but can do wonders. i agree w/ couto consult. steroid responsive meninghitis? look it up, i know it happens in whippets, not sure about GH. it's pretty frustrating these days, unfortunately racing breeders only care about their dog's performance for a short period of time. so many things happen as they age, problems(osteo etc) are not a concern of the breeders. talk to your vet and come up w/ a plan of action and a budget. it's essential, in today's world vets just look for the answer no matter what and test beyond our pocketbook's contents.
  2. annie hated the car and would stand there like a statue when i tried to get her in. i tried everything- treats thrown in, person sitting in the back seat- you name it. eventually with perseverance she got her act together. never was that happy going for a long haul but she did it. mango puked in the car for over a year. no matter what- crate, back seat, empty stomach, car sick meds. she is now getting better. willie peed, pooped, vomited in the car. thank god i used a crate and still had newspapers to line the seat and behind the crate. a 6.5 hr trip to vt. cured him of that. just keep on taking them, line the seat w/ many layers of towels, have baby wipes and plastic bags(for the dirty towels) in the car and go for it.
  3. Please interview the trainers that you consider working with. Some are better at dealing with reactive dogs than others. It will be nearly impossible to control 2 leashes and work with food for positive reinforcement or distraction. So, I would consider a martinagle and head harness/halti lead, use the short double clip leash to connect the two. That will be in addition to your regular leash attached to the halti. That is just for halti failure. Harnesses are excellent for geriatic dogs who need mobility assistance. Personally I feel putting a harness on a reactive dog is asking the owner for brute strength to move it.
  4. i have ENTEDERM which is very similar- the stuff is worth it's weight in gold! i just used it on an inflamed nail bed. it was inflamed from impact and salt/chemicals on the road. i cleaned it, applied the ointment 3xs daily and i saw a marked improvement in 3 days. the key is not to abuse a drug w/ steroids or antibiotics. so, i say, use gingerly as you would with any drug and if an improvement is not observed in a short period of time, see your vet.
  5. Our Etsy shop will be closing down and due to travel plans we will not be going to any shows this year. (no Grapehounds, Dewey Beach, GIG) So, if you are looking for sighthound antiques or greyhound paintings, try https://www.rubylane.com/shop/bushman-studio Commissions still welcome. Prices range from $120- $600 depending upon the size. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE
  6. if you are going to do a dental you may as well do a tie-back. there always is a risk with anesthesia with a dog, especially an older dog.
  7. i have raised both greyhound and whippet puppies. he looks fine! just continue feeding him as much as he will eat, you will have skinny periods, looking filled out periods and then skinny times again. somewhere around 2 the GH fill out. the whippets somewhere around 9 months. enjoy and remember they mature slowly- and adolescence is difficult on you! what ever they learned as a puppy goes right out the window. just be consistent and enjoy daily cocktails or wine. it all comes back, eventually.
  8. Felix lost his, he hit frozen dirt the wrong way and it popped off. It bled bu t quick stoop did the trick. They do grow back wonky. So in a couple of months when you see the nub just start dremling it back.
  9. i have always used the back seat on my cars. never a hammock seat cover- a good fitting seat cover w/ a large towel on it. we have traveled for days on end and never had a problem. when doing shows i will the foot well with boxes but other wise they are empty. often i've had a dog decide to lounge down there, especially since cars no longer have that transmission hump. to me less is more -
  10. The right size dog is essential. I can lift abd carry up to 40#. I'll stay under that. Good luck-
  11. if your dog's teeth were polished after the dental and you give the dog natural items to clean their teeth with a dental should last. i serve raw marrow bones, now cow cheeks(not rawhide and cleans teeth really well) and dry food. yup, it's not that necessary to soak food, there are contrasting opinions, but if it works for you it works. some dogs tolerate bully sticks well, mine haven't in the past, so i don't go there. part of the GH tooth problem is genetics(like people), diet and teeth that are not polished.
  12. you forgot to list diabetes incipidus/water diabetes. it often will subside after treatment. greyhounds do get it- it's mentioned the the racing handbook(forgot the name). felix was tested/treated for UTI, still tanking up on water and explosive urination. my vet tried the old fashioned treatment of vasopressin tannet injections. like a light switch he stopped tanking up on water. the first shot lasted a full month. the second injection we tried 1/2 dose, it didn't work, gave him the full dose and he never needed another dose. go know? https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/diabetes-insipidus-in-dogs https://www.merckvetmanual.com/endocrine-system/the-pituitary-gland/diabetes-insipidus-in-animals
  13. Ditto, you will be giving Henry the most loving and caring gift of all gifts.
  14. Annie showed no signs of osteo until she jumped off the bed onto carpeting and her leg broke in half. You don't want to experience that! X -ray with orders to euthanize while under. Let your sweet old gal not suffer one minute more. I hate to sound so blunt but both of my girls had osteo. 10+years later I still have a bitter taste in my mouth since the first vet would not follow my request and insisted that we should consider amputation and chemo. It was 6 weeks of drugged misery for poor Emily and our family.
  15. look into http://www.senilife.com and purina bright minds. both take at least a month to kick in. but it won't hurt- i've dealt w/ senility in older dogs and it sounds like what you are dealing w. it may not be at the stage where they are up and about all night before starting to keep you up.
  16. it also takes a couple of months for their paws to harden and toughen up. remember many track dogs have lived on sand. if this doesn't heal promptly then i would speak w/ your vet. i don't want to be the grim reaper but this can be some sort of auto-immune situation. btw- the best thing for healing paws is by keeping them dry. dust a couple of times a day with a medicated foot powder. you will be shocked at how quickly they start to heal. and i would personally stay away from boots. that's calling for a fungal or yeast infection. look into this stuff if you wish. i have used it on awful wounds as the result of stable fly bites. lots of horse people swear by it. https://www.amazon.com/COAT-DEFENSE-Canine-Preventative-Powder/dp/B07ML4Q9LN/ref=sr_1_5?crid=12WABVFLN40E6&keywords=coat+defense+for+dogs&qid=1638192950&sprefix=coat+defense%2Caps%2C270&sr=8-5
  17. My late vet did one week of DES and it worked for quite some time. It seems like directions have!changed.
  18. YES!!!! all of my dogs have grieved when their partner has died. the only solution was another dog and then they were happier than ever. and yes, i gave it a long go- 9 months with willie, all he did was stare at the floor and 3 months with felix, he too turned into a lump after annie passed, willie passed, emily passed. so, once they have a bond it needs a substitute. yeah, it's guaranteed foster failure. felix and willie both picked out their new partners in crime.
  19. i too would be leary of fat- that's why i shared the soupy rice/chicken meals and toast. keep some pumpkin on hand- and stick with what he wants and that's it. if felix binged he paid for it- clean up was a joke. no need to count exact calories, what he can consume is what he can consume. canned food can be quite the treat- and some are quite high in calories but also have high fat. let the predisone do it's thing- just remember to let him out a lot. good nutrition is not what one needs to care about- it's just calories and happiness. oh, skip the ensure- my friend's dog had the worst runs on it.
  20. i just posted what could have been my reply to this on your other posting! Nishiki short grain sushi rice is cheap, flavorful and a whopping 600 calories per cup!
  21. you can also try Felix's favorite- i cooked an entire chicken in short grain japanese rice. when it was done i deboned the chicken and chopped it, mixed it in the rice. the rice is so flavorful and japanese short grain rice is many more calories than regular rice. amazon carries it, kohoko rose is a common brand. also, purina pro plan sport- BEEF is their highest calorie kibble. keep up the good work- the prednisone should be increasing his appetite. i went thru this with felix. also, white bread toast is higher in calories than one realizes, i used to cut it into cubes and he loved the stuff.
  22. The problem was MDR1 sensitivity. It's common in some breeds- such as wind sprites. But occasionally/rarely a GH and other sighthounds might have it. They were using the recommended GH protocol. Multi-Drug Resistance Gene (MDR) codes for a protein that is responsible for protecting the brain by transporting potentially harmful chemicals away. In certain breeds, a mutation occurs in the MDR1 gene that causes sensitivity to Ivermectin, Loperamide, and a number of other common drugs.
  23. one of the new intakes in the local group had a sever negative reaction to the hookworm protocol- $5k later she is blind and a mess with neurological problems. do work with your vet and make sure that you don't poison your pup. it's a difficult task to clean them up. i personally would share the pro heart 6/12 regime and ask your vet a ton of questions.
  24. i purchased the breakaway collar- soft, safe and found it 1/2 dozen times in the yard. if your dog is not constantly wrestling it should stay on and if your dog wears a ton of tags(many do) you need not fret about the tags getting caught on anything. https://breakawaycollar.com i also use a simple buckle collar from Lupine. I love the price and variety. The 1/2" size fits up to 16", so if you have a female, this should work. i use the smallest tag possible, no name, just telephone numbers. the boomerang flat collar tag works only for the 1" size collars. they easily come off of the 1/2" size collars.
  25. use google shopping and get your prices. allivet always meets the competitor's price, so call and speak to a person. they also have free shipping coupons. i tried chewy since i did find a good price and a 20% coupon on top of that. between sending the rx down and they needed to ask the vet a question, it took over 3 weeks! allivet is faster. the question was silly, it was for heartworm meds, and my vet specified the weight, but they wanted the color on the box-?? i figured i would give chewy a try, eh-eh. for other drugs, such as Zofran which tends to be $$$ unless you strike it right i just used google shopping. that one drug is cheaper at the vet. always get their prices.
