  1. all of the kirkland varieties did not agree w/ any of my dogs. but all of the PURINA varieties do! and their stools were reduced by over 50%. i had been serving holistic select by eagle pac. purina is in the process of eliminating some of their lines, so if you do go that route just be aware of that. anything around 24%(+/-) protein should work, ft 12-14%. remember pet dogs are not out in a kennel, running in a huge run, racing or training. so be smart and look at the calorie count which is always listed. somewhere around 380 is easily digested and used. age and activity level are all part of the formula figuring out how much they need to consume. the greyhounds needed somewhere around 1000C per day. my whippets vary from around 550(the 5 year old) to 780-825 for the young one. When she was around a year I served Purina Sport, but once mature- Purina One. Both weight half of what a GH does- 35lbs! i do keep all of my dogs on the thinner side(always have) since in the long run it's healthier. Less weight and stress on arthritic joints for the GH. Look into Purina One, Purina Focus and NO SUPPLEMENTS since i started Purina products. Great coat, skin, very little waste product. AND I DON'T USE CANNED FOOD! Chewy is great since they will refund your $$ if your dog doesn't like it.
  2. MUZZLE! and watch her as she matures, she may stop. but to save $$ and health concerns MUZZLE! put some peanut butter in the muzzle so it becomes a welcome/positive experience.
  3. Why not take all your test results somewhere else? Can you send them to a vet school? Thinking OSU, Cornell,Tufts, U of Penn Michigan State? I'm not sure of where you are located.
  4. do contact daniel oliver, his link is my initial post. he is excellent and all will be done on-line. nip this in the butt as they would say, you don't want a reactive dog, especially to people! don't wait!!! i have referred other dog owners to him and they all have been very pleased, use my name- andrea w/ lettuce & mango.
  5. if your vet doesn't feel comfortable reading the rads then you can ask to have the digital image sent to a ortho vet, or get a consult thru either Antech labs or another general vet. When annie broke her leg the young crew at the ER vet had never read a rad w/ cancer, especially a star configuration. that's how i know about the consult from Antech. It sounds like your looking for a diagnosis. Symptoms of the dreaded C are often obvious before an x-ray gives one a firm diagnosis unfortunately. Think about it, if you can maintain a good comfort zone for your 13+ year old dog we are talking about quality of life decisions. I've been there. Comfort, love and good food make up quality of life at that age. Ask about meloxican it's a wonder drug- i swear by it for my arthritic knee and felix was on it for quite a while. Gabapentin also helps immensely and both are more than affordable.
  6. do i have the only dog who went totally naked from the velvet? and the other dog slipped it- yup, on tight and a porta-john truck came barreling down the aisle we were set up at in Brimfield Antique Show. Annie took off full steam ahead thru all the vendor's tents and aisles to rt 20. she was found in a yard 4+ miles away. thank dog she made a left turn into a residential neighborhood vs. straight to rt90. and even with 50 years of canine ownership i still can't manage 2 leads on one dog and another dog at the same time and have full control. hence my feelings about harnesses.
  7. the fishtale collars are lovely. i have a few from spain and rarely use them. contact me privately since i might just sell one if you are interested and i have 2 thinner martingales that are not working for my whippets(will sell those cheap). but honestly the thinner martingale will serve your needs. i do have a fishtale that is a choke collar. difficult to find, one collar maker here in the states makes them and only sells them at specialty shows bolduc leather. similar to it is the limited choke collar just fishtale shape. i have a limited choke from E-ZY dog(a work horse of a collar- one of my whippets has super high prey drive and is stronger than a GH) and everyday limited choke collars from fuzzywumpets. https://www.amazon.com/EzyDog-Checkmate-Martingale-Style-Training-Correction/dp/B01GH44MLK/ref=sr_1_20?crid=1F2G51RISGE99&dchild=1&keywords=limited%2Bslip%2Bcollar%2Bfor%2Bdogs&qid=1627691875&sprefix=limited%2Bslip%2Bcollar%2Caps%2C166&sr=8-20&th=1 i only use this for walking, works well, but not to be left on. https://www.fuzzywumpets.com/collections/limited-slip-collars/style_everyday-collar+width_1-wide#collection or their walkers with leash permanently attached are EXCELLENT!!!! they wear well and are soft on the neck. another option, once your dog stops growing is this https://www.hoganleather.com/store/martingales/padded-limited-choke-collar/ how old and how big is your dog now?
  8. save your money. try the anti-inflammatories and maybe ask about gabapentin and/or meloxican. that's a lot of carprofen, quite often, i've always dosed it once a day.do check and make sure your dosage is correct. but your vet must have a reason when and if you proceed with x-rays make sure they are digital. https://www2.zoetisus.com/content/_assets/docs/Petcare/dosage-chart-rimadyl-link-out.pdf
  9. your pup is an adolescent, which can be quite the challenge. you don't need a harness! stick with a properly fitting martingale. since your dog is young take a look at the 3/4" Lupine Martingale collars. That is my go-to for greyhounds, especially young or smaller GHs. they are guaranteed for life, even if chewed! the thinner the collar the more control you have. i have also started to used a limited slip collar but the martingale is still the safest if adjusted properly and worn high on the neck. and if you can't sign up for training classes, then do some research on Youtube. there are many excellent videos out there. daniel oliver is an excellent trainer who will work with you via video. i recommended him to a friend when she got her 6 month old gh pup. i could give my friends pointers but she really needed a program to stick with and consistent video chats/demos on both her part and the trainers. even though she has had numerous GH in the past a puppy, especially a sighthound puppy is challenging. she has had total success using daniel and i have referred other people who were very very pleased w/ his innate wisdom and experience. https://www.oliverdogtraining.com/about-us
  10. a good bath always kicks in heavy duty shedding- so, treat yourself to a grooming. remember to tell them NO HAIR DRYER. GH can't take the heat. have his nails done and then get a grooming mitt- ask the groomer and go for it!
  11. those are stop pads- yup they wear them off/down when they stop. felix's seemed to grow back. of course they became diminished in size every time he ripped them. i left them alone- he cleaned them and off he went running like a manic the next day. people who coarse often wrap their dog's stop pads- but not everyone does. it's a matter of anatomy and style of running.
  12. god's greyts? https://godsgreyts.com located in florida, my friend in ohio always adopts thru them. she has wonderful dogs just saw a post on FB from a friend- 2 in florida to be adopted together. she doesn't share but here is the link to the grouphttps://www.awesomegreyhoundadoptions.org
  13. Yup, gas, baby formula and now dog food are all adding to the daily grind of trying to exist in 2022. I've been serving purina products for quite a few years first Proplan chicken/rice, Sport and now Purina One beef small bites. first i noticed the products were out of stock at chewy so I ordered twice thru amazon at the standard price of $41 for 31#. recently i went to place an order and it was up to $78 for 31#!!!! on my return trip to NY from the Dakotas I scored 2 bags at the Bay City Tractor supply stores for $45! The sport was close to $80 for 50# an increase of nearly $25!! So, what are you serving these days that may not have been affected by the greed or really the shortage of raw materials(??) as a result of the pandemic or the brave new world we now exist in? I have 2-3 months of kibble stored in a cool dry place purchased at a reasonable price, but that like the $2.xx price for a gallon of gas is most likely gone but not forgotten.
  14. i was camping in Sheboygan when you had that tornado experience. I asked the camp host what the protocol is, since i come from an area that never get tornados. her advice- the bathroom/bathhouse to be specific since there aren't windows in each stall. fortunately the dogs were boarded. so, i guess the next time i'm not in my van(limbs thrown on and around the van) i'll go to the bathroom and keep the hounds with me. what i ended up doing is after the car was attacked we went to an open area- lots of lightening. but what are the odds of the car getting struck by lightening the same night a limb fell on it? it was raining too hard to even get to the bath house! we dodged branches on the way to an unwooded area.
  15. keep nails short- cut and dremel weekly https://www.chewy.com/bio-groom-show-foot-anti-slip-dog/dp/291499?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=12769807407&utm_content=Bio-Groom&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwtvqVBhCVARIsAFUxcRvxQUBpsR3YlL91yNwiGUK8vshN5zOoiqyu55W5N9ZXBTV23KRBml0aAt9rEALw_wcB there are also other products which are used in the show ring to prevent a dog from slipping. i would give this a try or something similar. rugs will cause a problem w/ your asthmatic roommate. the ultra thin neoprene runners do not hold dog hair and wash/vacuum well. sometime you can find them at home goods and they last for many years. i use them on the back seat of the car as a non-skid cover. but here is a link to amazon https://www.amazon.com/Shape28-Runner-Ultra-Thin-Kitchen-Backing/dp/B08283KC17/ref=sr_1_26?crid=WJZJFRY29ERH&keywords=neoprene+floor+runner&qid=1656712019&sprefix=neoprene+floor+runner%2Caps%2C155&sr=8-26 i have not laminate but vinyl flooring with a great texture. i've had it for 10+ years now and love it. https://www.armstrongflooring.com/residential/en-us/vinyl-flooring/luxury-vinyl-tile/luxe-plank-best.html laminate wood does not wear as well nor withstand accidents.
  16. PECID AC- at least 10mg prior to feeding. i always have the 20mg in the house, so that i what i use. it's for acid reflux. if tummy is upset why not go for plain boiled white rice and chicken for a while. let things calm down and then slowly introduce a bland low fat kibble. the sock theory is interesting- greyhounds can be a lot like goats!
  17. anesthesia has change so much over the past couple of years that you shouldn't run into the same post op complications. so, when you find your new vet do talk teeth removal. there is nothing worse than a mouth full of infected teeth. DH never had braces, minimal dental hygiene as a kid(big family/little $$) and went thru years of antibiotics, periodontal work etc. the infections do affect health in the long term. i have friend's who tried to save their GH's teeth- when they were finally removed the dog had a totally new personality! lighting isn't going to strike twice when it comes to your past experience. good luck
  18. it's antibiotics that result in tooth discoloration not panacur. worming with panacur is standard procedure in whelping a litter. the dam(mother) releases eggs(from worms) that are with in her body(mostly muscles) and then passes them on to the pups. the eggs have lied dormant for years- so, worming for dam and yes, puppy worming for all. lettuce(whippet) had a litter last year and it was explained to me. i go w/ genetics are per the horrible dental situation. but this is all too common in GH- hence/genetics. remember breeders are breeding for performance and a short life at the track. we give this wonderful companions a great long life that was never imagined by the breeders.
  19. my point is the food really isn't getting digested! why the radical change is both amount and consistency of stool when food was changed? as my vet/friend said- it's more digestible(she is the one who suggested purina) has overfeeding been considered into the solution?
  20. mmmm......my greys went from 4+ poops a day to maybe one firm on purina! Proplan focus and i reduced down to Purina One Beef(less calories) and have been able to cut out the fish oil and just about everything else. there has to be a reason that so many breeders are serving purina. and i don't think it's them being bought by the company. it's worth a try- they have chicken, lamb, salmon and beef varieties - something is bound to work. i even know people who have dogs in top shape feeding old fashioned dog chow! the checkered board pattern bag! also, how old/size/weight of your dog. dogs need less food than you realize. felix 74#- 2.5- 3 c per day, annie was 65lbs and ate 2 cups a day, mango, 34#s but young is 2 c, lettuce, 5- 34lbs- 1c day. in my old age i'm leaning away from higher end designer foods.
  21. also, not mentioned is large dog puppies DO NOT need a ton of protein in their kibble. they need to grow s-l-o-w-l-y! watch ankles for knobbies- growth platelets that are still growing. that's what it's all about. really no need for unnecessary x-rays. smaller dogs grow faster. felix who came to me at 7 weeks matured to a 74lb/29.5"(at shoulder) male at 2.5 yrs of age. so, it can take a while. Mango, a whippet, who is now the top of the standard and 34lbs had closed growth plates at 6-7 months and settled into her shoulders after her first heat. she was totally mature at around 18 months. salukis take years to mature, growth plates close around 9 months and they reach their mature weight at 2-3+. just watch and if your pup is happy, playing, getting into trouble and has a great coat(looks like he does) then don't worry! ENJOY! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE feed a tried and true old fashioned dog food! less is more sometimes. GRAIN FREE LEADS TO DCM! (one of my dog's littermate was fed grain free- he's gone now, congestive heart failure due to grain free feed) also, if you are concerned about dwarfism his legs would be short, bowed and paws toed out! just converted height and weight to inches/pounds- he's perfect!
  22. i will share that my dog who had seizures always concluded each episode w/ a release of bodily fluids- both pee and poop. he would try to get outside and inevitably backed up to the door and did his business. what fun entering the house. discuss w/ your vet, has your vet considered meds if they are on a regular basis? each dog is very different, i found x-pens and gh did NOT work. large crates always worked best for me, personally. my 31" crate for my females is now cherished by my 35lb whippets. it's a loft vs a bedroom to them. think about easily washable crate mats(midwest & chewy has some thick faux fur w/ memory foam filler) that can be thrown in your washing machine. even my 11 year old dog walker handled a surprise episode w/ ease. it's all common sense and not panicking. good luck.
  23. read the fine print....i was looking into what i could get for my girls. eh....also, there are apps out there for comparing policies.
  24. Felix came to us at 7 weeks, left the farm at 5 days since he was part of an orphaned littler and hand raised. at gig, when he was 8(well past his prime) he clocked in at 38mph on a recall. expect top speeds at 2-4 years of age. just playing soccer and going for balls will increase your pup's speed and dexterity. at 11 months GH are still pretty clumsy. this changes with maturity. my prey driven whippet clocked in at 36mph on her first fast cat when she was under 2. look into fast cat if you want to start running your pup. it's one dog at a time, pretty safe(unless the run is a mud pit) and fun. the AKC has it listed on their web site.
  25. They contacting Carol from God's Greyts. She had posted something on the GIG fb page.she is from Florida and well acquainted with the problem and has both generic meds and info. Carol is a wonderful resource.
