spottydog Posted April 28, 2020 Share Posted April 28, 2020 Oakley has developed a fluid filled bulge hanging on her throat. It’s not huge, but it shouldn’t be there, and is worse than it looks in the photo. Her face or throat is sensitive, she screamed last night having her hound collar removed (we just thought *drama queen*) and when I went to rub her face today, she screamed again, which is when I discovered the bulge. Has anybody ever had anything like this crop up? Tooth problem, bruise somewhere? Can’t see anything in her mouth. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I had one in my cheek a few years ago and the cheek swelled with a big lump just like this. I don't know how it would be treated in a dog if that's what it is. We had the patients suck on a lemon. That opened up the salivary glands so the radiologist cold insert a thin tube for injecting contrast. This is not a do-it-yourself thing unless you've talked with your vet. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics. I am also thinking blocked salivary gland or an badly infected tooth that is draining and pooling below the jaw. Do you have a harness? If not, then loosen the collar before slipping it on/off. racindog Posted April 28, 2020 Share Posted April 28, 2020 I would get to a decent vet for evaluation asap. My main concern would be abscessed tooth and that can kill relatively quick. The reason I would be so concerned about that is because I had a dog with a blocked salivary glad that caused a big lump right on the bottom/side of her throat that the vet said was not an issue and to leave it alone. It never caused any issues and was NEVER the least bit painful. The pain your girl has probably means its something that needs attention sooner than later. JMO. It is a little worse this morning, so will reach out to our vet and see what the protocols are for an exam. One of ours had this and the whole side of her head swelled up and she ended up needing to have it lanced with a drain inserted. It *was* painful for her. If you can't get in today, use warm-hot compresses to help keep the blood flowing and move the built up fluid out. Our girl ended up healing completely with no further after effects, but it was several weeks. Vet couldn’t see anything in particular, but she is going in again for a mild sedation tomorrow morning for a good look-see. Was given antibiotics and Metacam in case it is teeth. This morning the fluid bulge is gone, so that’s good. They will have a good look in her throat/teeth under mild sedation, and hopefully the will have solved the mystery! Nothing has been found. She’s just turned 5 in the last few days, so she’s not an old lady...They have looked at her teeth, but there’s nothing terrible that they can see. She’s still on Metacam and Clavimox, but is back to her usual self. Vet acknowledged that it was a mystery. We’ve done everything we can except full dental xrays. A dental is on our wish list, but our vet says her teeth are pretty good for a hound, so we will pay this episode off and push the dental down the road. Our vets have bee extremely busy, and apparently all kinds have weird things have been coming in the door. People have been holding off coming in and all kinds of advanced things have been coming over the threshold...The vets are exhausted... And thanks to all who responded to our situation! My guess (not a vet or any other health professional!) would be a blocked/infected salivary gland (very painful) 'that started to resolve on its own and cleared up with the Clavimox. A tip on the x-rays when/if you get them......make sure your vet offers the actual legitimate "dental x-rays." He can take x-rays with his 'regular' x-ray machine but they do NOT show a comprehensive picture. Only legitimate dental x-rays do. I had a credentialed vet dental specialist take a specific dental x-ray of my dog and it was still only around $50. Why pay the same amount of money for x-rays that are NOT as reliable and may miss something? It is an important difference. Anybody that questions it should let a certified (not a vet that just 'claims' a dental specialty) explain it to them( and that includes vets to according to what the legitimate specialists have told me).
