Oh no! How is Pinky doing today? That is so much for you to process at once. Especially not knowing a cause for what is happening.

Sending healing thoughts for Pinky. I hope the new meds start kicking in soon.

I just checked in after a few days and discovered so much sad news.

I am so sorry to hear about FedX. He was truly an inspiration to us all.

I am also saddened to hear about Pinky's latest news. Definitely send the x-rays, labs and symptom descriptions to OSU for their take on what can be done. Here is the link, so you don't have to waste time looking for it:

Thanks, Jane...I'm sending them off to them now.

Pinky had a decent night...her temp has come down to 103.3...not as low as I'd like but we're getting there. Her legs are still a little bit puffy, I've been using the ice pack that I have for me knee on them, moving it around periodically. She seems to get some relief from that.

Unfortunately money is becoming a huge issue and I'm feeling backed into a corner in that regard...someone suggested Palladia, and that's great and all, but, she hasn't been on it as part of her metronomic protocol because I can't afford it, so I definitely can't afford it now. My mom paid for her ER visit yesterday because I just don't have $500some sitting around. It's stressful and horrifying. Now of course our regular vet will need to see her, and Fritz's toe still isn't better and before all of this stuff with Pinky happened, I was worrying about how I'm going to pay for Fritz's recheck appointment. And then I think maybe there's something I should have done differently with Pinky, but no...there's no way I could have NOT done the amputation with her. So many questions swimming in my head...all I want to do is go to sleep.

Oh Kristin :(:grouphug I know somewhat how you feel. I don't have the financial burden of an amputation, but I still have to make decisions based on the others I have, on how much I can do for Bruiser. Each item, when taken alone doesn't seem like much, but when you start adding it all together becomes quite costly. There is one thing that I have Bruiser on that is not costly and may be of interest to you. I don't know if she's already on it, but IP6 & Inositol has shown in studies to stop the growth and reduce the size of lung tumors. I am using the Enzymatic Therapy brand and a bottle of 240 pills runs about $24.00. The best price I found was through Allstarhealth.

Well, I'm glad Pinky is improving a bit, and that she is home with you. I agree with Jane that this sounds like something that OSU might have some insight on.

I have a bit of Palladia left over from Twiggy, but already offered it to someone locally (they haven't said whether they want it yet, I'll ask them again, and if they don't, I'd like to offer it to you. I think it is 11 50-mg pills and 1 10-mg pill).

Continuing to send good thoughts for all of you!

I've got 10, 50 mg Palladia and 20, 10 mg Palladia Kristin can have. Ben was taking 70 mg a day. Just let me know if you'd like them and we will send them on their way.

Well now you're just going to make me cry! That is such a generous offer...let me see what our vet wants to do and we'll go from there. Thank you so much!

Pinky seems like she's feeling a little bit better...I need to take her temperature yet tonight but I can tell just by touching her that it has come down. She's still a little bit puffy in her legs but it has improved dramatically from yesterday. She's now had three doses of prednisone and Clavamox, so I'm hoping she'll continue to improve.

It's so very strange to see her unwell...even after her amp, she didn't seem to feel as crummy as she did yesterday. If she ever skips a meal I'll know she's REALLY not well...she's been here almost six years and aside from not getting breakfast the day of her amp, there was one day where she didn't eat all of her breakfast. She loves food and the peanut butter that she gets with her meds :) I have a pic somewhere of her with a giant spit bubble on the side of her face because she's drooling while I get her meds ready :lol

Temp down to 102.3 this morning, ate breakfast and took pills as usual. She just participated in an early morning roo-fest with the others :lol She seems a little bit brighter-eyed today, but still not 100%. Her legs seemed GREAT when she first got up, but after a trip outside and standing to eat her breakfast, they are a bit puffy again <_< I know that's normal as her body needs to reabsob that fluid, but it's still bothersome. It took her a good 5 days to reabsorb everything in her rear leg after her amputation, so I'm not going to freak out about it yet. Thankfully her temp is down.

Heard back from Dr. Kellogg at OSU...

Dear Kristin - thank you for the information about Pinky. I am very sorry to hear about her lung tumors, and I do see them in the xrays. Unfortunately this is not good news for her. Her labwork is largely unremarkable, with the exception of a mildly elevated neutrophil count (that's a white blood cell type), and decreased albumin (a protein). These may be secondary to inflammation, most likely due to her cancer, however there are literally hundreds of possible explanations. Fortunately, the changes are not severe, and I hope that with good care they will normalize. In general, I can say that based on the information I have that her fever and edema are almost definitely secondary to her lung cancer, and that this is not so uncommon. Antiinflammatories can be effective to bring the fever down, and, antibiotics may help in the case of secondary infection. In addition, IV fluids may be beneficial. She may well have had all these things done already.

You ask about suggested treatment/testing etc. My suggestion is that you have Pinky seen by both a boarded Veterinary Oncologist and a boarded Veterinary Internist. Her care will need to be individualized to her specific clinical signs and response. I know we are far away from you, but, we could see Pinky if she can be brought to Columbus.

Not a chance. Our vets here are excellent though so it's really not necessary.

I just thought that the fever and edema were independent of the lung tumors. If the tumors are CAUSING this, and we can't keep it under control, that's obviously not good and I may be having to make some decisions sooner rather than later :cry1

Just spoke with Dr. Bahns. We are to stay the course with the pred and the clavamox, and keep track of her temperature. If needed we may add in furosemide (spelling?) to help with the edema. I just hope we can resolve this and live normally for at least a little while. She said the good news is that she still has LOTS of lung space. But unfortunately we're now playing the management game rather than trying to cure anything.

She did say she'd get ahold of Dr. Thomsen to let him know (he's currently out of town) and ask for his opinion on trying palladia with her, etc.

*sigh* breathe in, breathe out. That's about all I'm capable of today :cry1

Kristin, I was so afraid that this would be the response. See what the oncologist says about Palladia. I will say that when Joe developed a second primary bone tumor while on Palladia, Dr. Couto decide to take him off of the Palladia. Of course this probably has no relation to what they would do with lung mets.

Palladia is horribly expensive, as you know. Pinky doesn't think about how much time she has left in this world. She only knows if she is happy, loved and feeling well. So if you decide not to do Palladia because of the cost, this makes you realistic about your finances, and it would be a decision many of us would make. I couldn't afford to do it for Joe without him being in a study at OSU.

Thank you everyone...today has been a very tough day for me but I had to take my time to cry it out and I think I've almost got it out now so that I can concentrate on taking care of Pinky. It's just not something that I was ready to stare in the face yet, but, the reality is, I just have to, so I'm going to get that over with and come to terms with it.

Pinky is still puffy but seemed bright-eyed and happy to see me when I got home this evening. I had to run back out briefly and wished I didn't have to because I just want to be at home with her so we can work on that edema. It's massage time, and I need to take her temperature as well. She was very excited to get her peanut butter with her meds and then she had a couple of cookies, which pleased her :)

Temp around 103.7...she's had a bit of a massage on those legs and they're elevated with her ice pack right now.

She ate her dinner a little bit too fast, so now she has a big air pocket...I tried patting her to basically burp her like a baby, but that didn't do the trick, so I gave her some Gas-X to hopefully help it along. She doesn't need gas pain on top of everything else.

Her heart rate seems a bit high in spite of the fact that she's asleep. She did just lay down about 20 minutes ago though, so maybe she hasn't returned to a resting rate yet after hopping around outside? She's breathing steadily, not fast or anything, but not as slow as a dog who is FAST asleep. Hopefully that will normalize.

Pinky is hopefully on the mend...we've at least seen some improvement. We've added Zeniquin into the mix as well as her temp is very up and down. It was 104 last night but 102 this morning. Tonight we're at 103.6. I'll take it again before bed to see if it changes at all.

The edema is still there but not nearly as bad, and she seems to get relief from me massaging it and from her ice pack sessions :) I'm just hoping we can get her back to feeling good.

Dr. Bahns talked to Dr. T today and he said that Palladia may be an option, but we're going to table that discussion for a later time. We need to get her feeling good again before we try that, and I know that a few here have had some cruddy side effects, so that's definitely not something we can throw at her right now.

As of this morning I really think the Zeniquin has been the silver bullet we needed! Her eyes aren't runny anymore and she's able to lay down comfortably, she is much less puffy, and her temp is down.

She just ventured out to the very back of the yard, which she hasn't done since she's been sick. When I called for her, she came RUNNING (which she also hasn't done since she has been ill). I'm very hopeful!!! :goodluck
