Need Advice

Recommended Posts

My mom let wally out in the backyard in the rain today, something I never do for this exact reason. I guess she either forgot or I didn't mention it but either way he hurt himself pretty badly. He has a 6" tear that required 18 staples to close and a huge bruise on his bum and his legs look like the went up against a cheese grater. He was given sedation at the vets as well as morphine and I was told he would be fine without any more pain killers tonight. He has tramadol to start tomorrow. Since he has gotten home he's been whining he wont settle down (just pacing and pacing) and the whining has been getting to the point of howling. I don't know if he is in terrible pain or if its the drugs causing it. I've taken him out 4 times tonight thinking he's needed to relieve himself. Only once he peed.

I don't know what to do for him. I'm exhausted as I've been up since 3am for work and haven't sat down yet. I need to be at work at 4am tomorrow to so I need some sleep tonight.

Please does anyone have advice. I'm home alone with my daughter (13 months) so I cant bring him back to the vets tonight. I cant stand to see him suffering like this.

Wilbur did not do good on Tramadol; it made him very restless, and he could not settle on it. So perhaps it is the Tramadol that has Wally pacing and whining.

ETA: Sorry. I misread what you wrote. I see he had morphine and has Tramadol to start tomorrow. No advice, but big hugs for Wally (and for you.)

He went to me regular vet today and they are closed now. The e vet wont give advice over the phone.

My little Echo had a couple of teeth pulled and was given morphine. She was so agitated, I almost took her to the evet. After a few hours she calmed down, but it was ugly while she was going through it.

I hope that's the case, he was given the morphine around 5. The howling is getting worse. I'm this close to waking my daughter and going to the e vet.

Gosh, I've never heard of morphine reacting like that but that's not to say it can't. I hope he settles down soon for you.

It's probably the morphine. I doubt he is in pain, it's more likely affecting him mentally - makin him restless and "high." I'm not sure they can do anything for him at the evet except sedate him again. Hugs for you and Wally!

FYI - Tramadol can have the same effect on many dogs, so be careful tomorrow.

Did they do xrays at the vet? Is it possible they missed something?

No we didn't do xrays. I didn't notice the bruise on his bum until I got home from the vet , now that's made me worry he did hurt himself more then just the skin tear.

Agh- my guess is it's the morphine- Ghs just do not do well with it. It should be running its course and hopefully he'll settle down soon.

Did they dispense any NSAIDs like Rimadyl, Deramaxx or Metacam?

No, just the tramadol. I do have metacam here though. Would it be better?

I wouldn't mix anything with the morphine without vet advice. I'd be afraid of making it worse by accident. How's he doing now? You could also try cold compresses on his bruise.

Wally finally settled down around midnight. He still wimpered off and on most of the night but stopped howling at least.

He didn't get up when my mom got to my place and was sleeping peacefully when I left at 4. Lets pray he has a better day.

Yes, morphine can do that. Also, when you start the Tramadol, be prepared for the same kind of thing, or even more bizarre behaviour. :(

Tramadol is well known for causing aural hallucinations (as I know from personal experience as well as reading about it). For a dog, it can be extremely distressing to hear noises that aren't there and they can react very badly and appear quite psychotic. It's a darn good painkiller though, so I would definitely try it, and see if he can tolerate it.

Poor guy :( . Hope today is much better.

One of my dogs had a bad reaction to Tramadol first time around. Second time, when there were no other options for treating, I gave it in 25mg increments, @ an hour apart until appropriate dose was reached. That worked much better to prevent the pacing / standing / stoned behavior.

Glad he settled down. Make sure they place a caution in his record- no opiates ! For the record it's ok to give NSAIDs with morphine. I would give the vet a call and have him ok it's use today instead of using the tramadol.

Missed this when I got home from work.

When we were near the end with Rex after one episode the vet suggested morphine.

I said OK.

Then he asked "can you watch him throw up when we give it or do you need to leave the room?"

Watching him throw up was a bit unsettling but nothing compared to the demons that chased him that whole night. He fought it, he paced, he panted, he cried...it was the longest night of both our lives.

I will never give a greyhound morphine again. Ever.

Glad Wally is finally getting some rest. Hope the morning is smoother. :grouphug

I hope Wally is feeling better today, and that he tolerates the Tramadol.

talked to my mom this morning, Wally is very stiff and sore today. He is screaming when getting up and down but is rest comfortably for the most part. I'm lucky he wasn't hurt more as he did a summersault into to back fence. I'm so thankful he didn't break his neck.
