When we brought her out to the car this morning, we were figuring out the best way to get her in, but Twiggy already knew - just hop in like usual! She does scream out usually when she gets up (from fear/pain/surprise? probably a combo of all the above). But has only done so twice today. Twiggy also is able to go up and down the multiple sets of 2-3 steps that I have to access my first floor room. She does them all by herself - the sling just seems to make it more awkward for her. OSU said that she is progressing much faster than they usually see. So, for now, all is well in Twiggyland. greysmom Posted August 21, 2011 Share Posted August 21, 2011 Dude never needed the sling either - he was moving around very well, and much faster than we could have helped him! He even figured out going potty without any help right off the bat. We did end up steadying him in the very beginning, but he rarely needed it. So happy that Twiggy is doing well! AWESOME update! 2brindles, I would tend to want to limit his access to the yard when I am gone - anything to reduce the chance of an unattended break. Unless iether dog has an underlying medical condition, they should easily be able to go 4-5 hours without going potty. You might have to work up to this if they are used to going whenever they want. Can a neighbor come and let them out while you are at work? Guest 2Brindles Posted August 21, 2011 Share Posted August 21, 2011 It's possible that a neighbor could come by; alternately from observing them the past few days I am inclined to think that they can hold it for the amount of time I am gone We took Ronan and Molly for a short walk this morning. Ronan walked without difficulty and he was able to check his "pee-mail" and take in some interesting smells. I am still having difficulty accepting his diagnosis and all that it implies. The upshot of our discussion was that Ronan's lesion is a cancer, it does not appear to have spread to the chest or lungs yet, and that we will keep him comfortable and happy for as long as possible. I got some Tramadol and some more Rimadyl there. I will give him his first Tramadol tonight after his dinner. I'm hoping it won't make him more restless; last night he paced around a bit. The upshot of our discussion was that Ronan's lesion is a cancer, it does not appear to have spread to the chest or lungs yet, and that we will keep him comfortable and happy for as long as possible. I got some Tramadol and some more Rimadyl there. I will give him his first Tramadol tonight after his dinner. Our vet told us to give him a Tramadol whenever he appeared to be in pain, regardless of when he'd had his last one. At that point, any side effects were going to be better than the pain. At the end, Sirocco was getting Rimadyl every 12 hours and Tramadol every 4. You may want to check with your vet for his recommendations on dosing as the disease progresses. Our vet also gave us the option of morphine; however, it would probably have made Sirocco unable to function. We said we would let him go before it came to that. Quality of life was our biggest concern. Sending big hugs of understanding to you and your boy. Just a quick note on tramadol, i don't think anyone other pup had this problem, but if FedX is given too much tramadol he has a hyperanalgesia reaction where he experiences more pain instead of less. My friends pit mix has the same problem. So just be aware that sometimes less is more. We found the combination of tramadol and gabapentin worked best for him. I posted a few times right after diagnosis,but then pretty much just read posts to see if any helpful tips were there. I released my beautiful boy today. The tumor had gotten huge,but his last days were really good. He never stopped eating and all poo systems were good. He had some truly horrible days and I learned how to adjust his meds thanks to all of you plus the Circle of Grey posts.. And yes, Gabapentin really did help him as far as the deep pain. I am so happy that I read about everyone's experiences and chose to go the route of "better two days early than two days late". Thank you for all your wisdom. I know how important it is to have the peace that comes with knowing that. that Ronan and Bee both have lots and lots of time left. 2brindles, don't forget about Gabapentin as an option, especially if you suspect that the Tramadol makes him restless.
