Guest Adrianne
I have to recognize this date. Ollie joined our family in early 2007, and for almost three years up until December 10, 2009, my pet family clicked along unchanged. And then THAT day. Sweet little Macy, our long-haired brood mama dachshund had been sick for about a week and had gotten so weak that we knew it was time to let her go. She'd been with us for five years, and she was the little queen of the house. She had the happiest wiggle dance in the mornings when it was time for breakfast. She lived for belly rubs. But she was suffering, and it was time. I laid with her and talked & petted her that morning while Jamie dug her little grave under a small tree that blooms the most beautiful purple in the spring. We took her to the vet and loved on her while they administered the shots, and our sweet Little Feets slipped away in just a matter of seconds. Oh, how I cried. We took her home and buried her beneath that tree. A couple hours later, we picked up Seth from school and went out to eat. We talked and shared stories about Macy, and we wondered how life in the house would be without her. We talked about grieving for her, and we knew the first few days would be extremely sad. Little did I know that there would be no grieving period for Macy, no adjustment time. It was dark by the time we pulled into the driveway, and I made the comment that it would be strange to have only Wilbur and Ollie greet us at the door. I opened the door, and there they were--so excited to see me. Wilbur took five or six running steps and let out the single most horrifying scream I have ever heard. His back leg had snapped in two....just like that. And just like that, in that single day, life as I knew it ended.
