Meg, I had excellent results with acupuncture and chiropractic on three of my dogs. Now that you have a diagnosis, might be something to look into for Strider. Good luck and please keep us posted on your handsome boy.

DITTO to the acupuncture and chiropractic! We had excellent results from them and I think that this would be a good avenue to explore before surgery. Good luck to you.

Hope he's feeling better soon. I'd recommend some Prednisone for the swelling. Something like Deramaxx doesn't usually do the trick for stuff like that. Any dog we've ever had with neuro symptoms like that is prescribed pred and robaxin (muscle relaxer).

Fritz was "drunk" once and he just needed a chiro adjustment :)

Just seeing this. I hope Strider has something minor going on and that he'll be with you for many years.

Acupuncture and chiropractic treatment are both things I would consider.

Inot ready for him to be old. :cry1

----------------------------------------------------

*Update: The vet thinks Strider has Intervertebral Disk Disease. His toes don't knuckle under, so that's good. But his ataxia (drunken weaving) means that he's somewhere between a mild and a severe case. We're going to try managing it medically before looking at surgical options. He has been prescribed Deramaxx to manage the inflammation and Tramadol for the pain. He'll be kept quiet/confined for a few weeks to see if he can regain some of the function he's lost.

The vet basically said he'll either get better over time or get worse really soon. :sad1 My poor old man.

Fingers crossed here for better over time results !!!
