dmswartzfager Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 (edited) We've had stuff with Wren going on for the past 3-4 weeks. First it was inappetence, which for Wren, is unheard of. Then she had horrible gas, which smelled bloody to Dr. Patty. Tried metronidazole about two weeks ago and that cleared up the gas, but her stool was still loose and orange-colored. Dr. Patty also elicited a pain response near Wren's sternum when I had her stop by and draw blood last week before taking her in for X-rays last Tuesday. Dr. Ruth did the radiographs, and there is a dense area in her abdomen, right behind her sternum, that can't be resolved - about the same location as Carrie's tumor. Dr. Ruth wasn't ready to say it was a tumor, so we tried some medications (amoxicillin, metronidazole, carafate, and omeprazole) and sent fecals out for intestinal parasite screening and also bacterial cultures. Tests came back negative (and bloodwork (full chem panel and blood cell count) was within normal limits), we've been feeding her chicken and rice for over a week now, and she still has loose orange stool. So Dr. Ruth has referred us out for an ultrasound, and Wren now has an appointment for tomorrow at 1:30. Dr. Patty thinks they'll probably do a bile acids test first, but maybe we'll luck out and they'll do the ultrasound at the same time. Other than the loose stool, Wren has no idea she's sick. She's happy with the chicken and rice and has normal activity levels. dmswartzfager Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 Ultrasound was unremarkable. Blood was drawn for cPL and B12 assays, results expected towards the end of the week. Next step *could* be biopsy via surgery or endoscopy, depending on bloodwork results. I've seen orange poop before, when we were trying to get Blitz's IBD stabilized. Therefore, if we're thinking IBD after bloodwork comes back, I'd prefer to just try the drugs vs. biopsy. Grad student pay isn't that great.
