  1. Thank you all for the suggestions. Katie is just starting to have some stiffness when getting up and half way thru her walk, so now I feel able to make a good decision.
  2. Kate is 11 years old, will be 12 in November. She has a bit of arthritis in her hips, so I am asking what some of you may be using to give your greys a little relief with this problem. Had been using ArthiMaxx Soft Chews for her for about 3 yrs but now it doesn't seem to be helping. Appreciate any insight/suggestions that may help my older girl.. ps She is a real sweetheart, love her so much
  3. I am looking for a good dental spray for my greys. Even with brushing their teeth they seem to build up a lot of tartar, just had our 7 yrs old teeth cleaned and know our soon to be 11 yr old will need it done also. I plan to have Katie's teeth cleaned one more time but at her age that will be the last time and need a good spray that will help. Does anyone use Kalvatin or know of someone who has, I believe it needs to be ordered by a vet. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  4. We were on vacation and our kennel discovered that DeeDee's urine was very "smelly", big odor and immediately took her to our vets; Her Bilirubin levels were very high indicating a UTI which they treated and the white cell count was high also. Next day, they took in another sample and our vet had the platelets counted in order to rule out something more serious. She was on Amoxicillin and now is fine. We take her tomorrow so that we can talk with our vet to see if there is a "good" dog food that she should be on and anything else we should be aware of. Any suggestions and trying to find more information of Bilirubin but everything seems to be for us humans, is there any where to look for normal ranges for our greys. Thanks all for any information.
  5. Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the input and will place my order today with F&S or 800PetsMeds.
  6. :gh_run2We have 2 greys and have always gotten our heartworm med from the vet. Called today to get current pricing and was a little shocked bythe price. They sell it by the pill $22.68 each, we usually get 2 box, 6 tablets each. We use Sentinel and don't want to change. I have a Foster & Smith catalog and I can get the 12 tablet box for $89.88, this is a huge difference. Does anyone get their meds from Foster & Smith. These are not our first greys and looking to save a little, since it is such a big price difference between them. Appreciate your input.

    Kidd

I keep sitting here wondering how to start and finally realize that there is no way to begin. I know many of you followed Michael McCann's post when he was looking for a new home for Blazing Kid. We had just lost our 4th grey to cancer, Thor who we thought would be with us forever. We saw Kidd'spicture and immediately fell in love with him. Michael was so wonderful in letting us do a long distance adoption, we live in Maryland. We drove to Boston and fell in love with him in person. Kidd became an immediate member of our home and our resident boy, Noah was so happy to have another buddy. They seemed like they have been together for years. Playing in the yard, sharing beds around the house and loving to go for rides and walks. Kidd had been gently jogging in the yard and slipped. He fell hard and broke his left thigh bone. Our vet took wonderful care of him, this happened April 1st. He was doing fine, but his leg just would not completely heal and x-rays showed the bone was not healing over one area. We thought it was the wires that had been holding the leg together because the first bioptsy was cancer free. Our vet thought it best to removed 2 of the wires and sent for another bioptsy. His leg kept swelling and producing fluid. They lanced his little ankle 2-3 times over the days and the fluid just would not stop. We went to see him every day and spent so much time with him. We went Tues, Sept 6 to bring him home. They brought in a blanket and laid it on the floor and went to get him. No more IV in his front leg and he walked in wagging his tail and standing for us to pet him. Our vet said she would be back and left us so we could really have those private moments and decide what to do. Kidd had been standing for about 5 minutes and it was so evident he was so very tired. He lay down and we gave tummy rubs, neck rubs, ear rubs and told him how much we loved him. He looked so contented and went to sleep as we massaged him. Our vet confirmed the worst, a fast moving sarcoma was the 2nd diagonsis and she was upset they didn't find it the first time. Kidd kept sleeping and smiling and we knew in our hearts we could not be selfish and bring him home for those few extra days and we made that most difficult decision to allow him to run free of pain. We would like to thank Michael for allowing this wonderful KIDD to grace our lives if only for a short time. He was greatly loved by us and by his former owner who we kept in touch with. She greatly loved him and did what was best for him. Our wish for a long life with him was way too short, but we are so blessed for having had him in our life. Run free sweet, sweet KIDD. You will always be loved. The house is so empty without you. KIDD ---- July 30, 2001 - Sept 6, 2011 Love, Mom & Dad and your best buddy Noah
  8. When we adopted Kidd no one knew about his storm phobia, the family who returned him forgot to mention it. Understandable since she had to return a much loved grey. We learned when the first storm went thru our area and found him hiding in the basement. Ordered the Thunder Shirt, put it on him but it helped very little. Next storm it did not help at all and had to resort to low dosage med to keep him comfortable. The T-Shirt may have helped if it had been started when he was younger but being 9 1/2 and habits and fears already set in, it doesn't help at all. So light meds and sitting on the floor with him is the only thing that gets him thru the storms, we are dreading the fireworks our neighbors set off every year. May have to take a long ride that evening! Good luck to you and hope it works for your grey.
  9. I truly wish I had the words to ease your pain. She is a beautiful girl, may she have a peaceful crossing and may you know you are giving her the greatest gift you can. Peace be with you.
  10. Thank you. Thor is on Rimaydl 75 mg 2X a day. I will contact our vet's office Monday AM and ask them to get in touch with OSU. Again, thank you for all the information. Linda
  11. I need your support and advise. About 2 months ago our beautiful black Thor had a soft tissue scacoma removed from his lip and the vet is sure it got it all so we felt this time we beat cancer. We are leaving Monday for vacation and Thor started limping, holding up his paw, we thought it twisted it in the yard. Quick call to our vet, they saw him right away. While she was examining his leg, just at the shoulder area he yipped. Took an xray and it showed whesre the bone is a little "moth eaten" well, we know what that means. We have lost one of our wonderfuld greys to osteo in 2008,2009 and another form of cancer this year. I could have fallen off the chair, Thor showed no problems with that leg until now. The vet who does the bone biopsy will be back in 2 weeks. In the meantime, do you suggest I ask them to send copies of the xray to Dr. Couto or wait until the biopsy is done. My problem is that I have been told that procedure can be very painful for them. Thor is 10 and I just do not want to hurt him. Clark had his back leg amputated (if you have the CG 2010 calendar he is the beautiful brindle boy in the small picutes just inside). To amputate Thors' front leg is not something I am looking forward too. Can someone tell me the address where they could send his information to Dr. Couto. This is just tearing me apart, I don't know which way to go and I have no choice but to leave tomarrow, Thor will be in good hands while we are away but I feel so very, very guilty. Linda
  12. I want to Thank You for that beautiful poem. I was lucky enough to have a black little girl who stole my heart from the moment she came off the hauler. Lucky enough to have had her for 8 years, watching her come from being a shy girl of almost 2 to 10 yrs and 3 days before losing her to TCC. This made me remember so much and am still missing her since Jan. THANK YOU !!
  13. We proudly had 2 wonderful greys from the track, then fostered some. Of course, like everyone who fosters we failed on the 6th try and a 2x return stayed with us at the age of 6. Then a 91/2 yr old boy was being returned and I knew he had to stay with us. I could not part with either one of them and our family of greys were now 4. We lost both of them to osteo and our 1st grey girl to transitional cell scarcoma, 2008, 2009 and Jan of 2010. I decided I really could not stand to lose another, however, our remaining boy, Thor and God had other plans. Thor needed a companion and one morning I had my usual conversatin with God and told him I would check our friends website and if there were a Senior being returned he would stay with us. Usually, they do not have many returns, let alone a senior, but there he was. A few phone calls and a visit and Noah was ours, again a 9 1/2 yr old boy. These seniors are the most fantasic dogs on the planet! There will always be a place here for the seniors, boy or girl, and we don't care how long they will be with us. They are so very special. I wish you the very best and hope your dreams of a senior home comes true. Like many others who know how special the seniors are, I will be glad to support you.
  14. I'm so glad all went okay. Like so many of our tripods I know he will be up and running before you know it. Thinking of you and your handsome one, prayers and hugs.
  15. Although he was not with you long, I'm sure he had the most wonderful home with all the love and attention he could have. The seniors who are returned and find homes with us bring so much into our lives. I am so sorry for your loss.
  16. I am so sorry for your loss. They feel our days with love and joy and when they are gone, our memories keep them with us always. What a beautiful picture of your handsome boy.
  17. Its amazing how the right people are in the right place at the right time. This is what I call a miracle, to have found her and to have such a wonderful ending is truly a gift from above. Bless you and the many others who have been a part of such a happy ending. Good luck in the future and I will always think of her tail "wagging".
  18. I am so sorry for your loss, hugs and prayers.

    Annie

    Peace to you sweet Annie
  20. Many hugs, I am so sorry you lost Pearl. May she be running at the bridge with all our fur angels.
  21. This sounds so familiar. Isis and Clark were buddies, playing and running in the yard. When he passed and although she still had Thor as a companion she went into a very deep mourning period. A very wise person told me not to hide my grief and when I cried for him, not to hide from her but to invite her into my arms and cry with her. Then remember the good times they had together and to laugh and to let her know it was okay to miss them. When I did this, instead of crying to myself in the bathroom, it really seemed to help her. Include them in the griveing process. It helped Isis I hope it helps you and Henry a little.
  22. So many of us here have lost our beautiful greys to cancer. Please know that we are here for you. I know you will do the best for your baby, keep her comfortable and shower her with love, hugs and kisses. You will be in my thoughts.
