Leg Break, Probably Os

I don't post here often but I really need some help/advice/opinions.

Christoffe, 9 1/2 year old, broke his left rear leg last night. It was right before feeding, no trauma involved, he was just standing with no weight bearing on his leg. I felt and squeezed the bones and muscles, not a whimper. I called the vet to discuss and said it sounded more like a soft tissue injury so I gave him a tramadol to hold him over for the evening and take him to the vet in the morning. He whimpered a few times before bed and still wouldn't bear any weight. I slept next to his bed for the night. Over night his leg swelled some but a little heavy around the knee area. At the vet they took xrays, bone is broken just above the knee. I can't believe he let me squeeze that area as hard as I did without a sound. I feel awful about it now. Vet believes there is indication of OS or some fungal infection. I'm waiting on a radiologist to give his opinion.

I'm worried that if its OS and we amputate his other rear leg won't be able to take it. He is already a little arthritic and weak in the back end.

We could have surgery to repair but whatever it is could spread and we'll be in the same situation soon.

I feel bad for bringing him home with a broken leg but I don't want to rush into any decisions, they could have done the amputation this afternoon.

I'm not really sure what I'm looking for here but I need a non-emotional sounding board for things I haven't thought of, other courses of action, etc.

I don't know if Dr. Cuoto would look at the xrays but I have them and could email them to him if anyone thinks that would be OK and could provide me with his email address.

Thanks in advance for the input.

And hey, don't beat yourself up. You had no idea and didn't do anything different than what anyone else would have done.

Hopefully you got some heavy duty pain meds or really increased the tramadol. I understand not wanting to rush into anything, but you really need to make a decision quickly. Try calling OSU and see if someone is available to talk now. They are an hour ahead.

Has a specialist read the xrays? If not, get them there right away so they can be read locally.

I'm waiting on a radiologist, oncologist and OSU to call me.

Tramadol was increased to 150mg, added rimadyl.

He's resting comfortably next to me on a a very soft bed.

If there was no trauma... then this his a pathologic fracture of some sort (most likely osteo unfortuneately) and the leg will need amputated. Of course wait to hear from OSU but you need to make this decision ASAP. There isn't enough Tramadol and Rimadyl around to overcome the pain of a broken leg!

Can someone help you evaluate whether he's a good candidate for amputation? Maybe acupuncture could help with the arthritis? What a shock for you and a really difficult time to make a decision. Sending lots of healing prayers to Cristoffe and strength to you. :grouphug

What a shock for you. Take a deep breath and do what you can...I agree that you need to make a decision quickly.

My dog was not a good candidate for amputation....you will be able to put all the pieces together and make a decision right for you and your pup.

I am so sorry.

Please send good thoughts/prayers for Christoffe tomorrow. He will be going through surgery to amputate his leg.

After discussions with our vet, local radiologist, surgeon, and OSU we decided this to be the best option. I just hope it gives him relief and he has good quality of life for some time. He seems to want to fight and we will give him every opportunity to do so.

I want to give a special thanks to the Dr. Marin of the OSU staff. She was wonderful and quick with information so we could make the decision that was best for Christoffe.

Thanks for all the input and good wishes.

I'm so sorry you and your precious boy are having to go through this. I can totally understand how you are feeling. Such a shock to have a sudden break, and then have to deal with osteo too. It's difficult to get your mind around it. But I'm glad you've made a decision. As Dr. Feeman said, there is no pain med strong enough to overcome the pain of a broken leg, or the pain of osteo, the most painful of the cancers. Getting the leg off quickly will spare Christoffe that pain. There are lots of people here who will tell you about their dog's amputations, so please keep us up to date with his recovery, and how he's doing. Circle of Grey is a good place to go for advice as well as support too.

Don't second guess your decision---you did the right thing. And try to get some sleep before he comes home!

Sending prayers and white light for a successful surgery, and quick recovery.

I know how you feel. We are going through an OS amputation right now with Bella. You got the information you needed and acted quickly and are doing the best you can for your boy. We felt the same way...to do what we could to help our beloved grey fight this awful disease. He is so lucky to have people like yourselves in his life to help him during this tough time!

Healing thoughts your way for a successful surgery and recovery for Christoffe! :grouphug

I understand that shock of a pathologic fracture as this is exactly what happened to Darcy - no trauma, no nothing - just a sudden break (osteo).

Thinking good thoughts for Christoffe and for you :grouphug
