I asked the same thing about our dark brindle boy a little while after we got him. I think it takes them a few months to get settled, even if they act like they're at home already.

Our Jake has some crooked toes, and the nail trimmer commented that two of them were broken at one point. I didn't see anything in his records about it, but I'm assuming it was a track injury. They don't bother him and we call him "Crooked Toes"

At least you can't say your life is boring with those two! Hope they don't feel too awful and the mess is all outside.

I don't have anything to add that others haven't said, and I'm fairly new to dog ownership as well... but, I did want to say that having all these questions and being paranoid is totally normal. I remember the night we brought Jake home we set everything up and then my husband and I just looked at each other and this huge horse-dog in our kitchen and both said "now what?" You will develop your own routine that works for you and Dobby (love the name!) I can't wait to see photos (hint hint).

Jake also has ten I think. And he has a pair that are mismatched, as in they are like 5 inches off from one side to the other. Weird!

I know they sell anti-gas supplements at the pet stores. Maybe you could feed one with the necks? I've never used them myself so I can't say if they work.

Yep! We will get the results when we go in next Wednesday for his stitches to be removed. I'm not too worried because all along we've really thought it was just an injury, but still fingers crossed. Jake is already feeling better and getting cookies and extra love He'll think he's won the lottery with his people home for 4 days in a row this weekend!

Jake came home from the vet yesterday with stitches and a dressing over them. The vet didn't give us a cone, and the discharge sheet says it's only necessary to use a cone if he messes with it. So far he hasn't touched it, but yesterday he was kind of out of it. My husband is going to check on him at lunch and make sure he's okay. Have there ever been times when you didn't need a cone after stitches, or should I just buy one knowing I will need it? Thanks! Here's a photo of him resting at home. They sell Pup corn at Petsmart and Walmart. I think it is very low-calorie. Mostly air, but they're getting something.

That is so sad. People who run puppy mills should be put away... I want to see photos once you get her!

Yay! I was just going to tell you not to get discouraged because it will all be worth it, but it looks like you already learned that! The best advice I got when adopting is that, despite being a little quirky, they're dogs and it's not that easy to break them

Jake does a lot of these things, and he also uses his paw to knock my phone or tablet out of my hand if I stop petting him. Little brat! I can't decide if he knows I'm paying more attention to the device or if he is just hitting me and it contacts my hand. Either way, it is annoying!

The bump is on his front left hock area. He has had a lump there since we adopted him. An aspiration showed nothing significant and the vet thinks it's an old tendon injury. It stayed the same for months and then grew seemingly overnight. The vet thinks he re-injured it and prescribed the anti-inflammatories and rest. However, it isn't going down The next step is a biopsy and I think we will probably have to go there.

Thanks for all the advice. We've been doing rides in the car (instead of truck) so that he gets to leave the house without too much walking around. He isn't actually lame at all- just has this bump. The vet said xrays wouldn't be worthwhile because it's soft tissue. Our next option is to do a biopsy, but he would have to go under and I want to avoid that if possible. I suppose we could close the dog door, but he almost never plays out there alone. I think he's been okay just chilling at home. I really hope the swelling goes down and we don't have to biopsy it! I'll have to try that newspaper game!

We have a huge boy and he has never jumped up into the truck by himself. He will put his paws up and we lift his butt into the truck.

Just saw the vet this morning. Jake has some inflamation and tenderness to an old tendon injury (we think). He's on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics for 2 weeks. He is also supposed to rest for 10 days - 2 weeks. No walks, playing outside, or dog park. We can control the outings, but does anyone have any experience keeping your dog from getting crazy in the house? He also has a dog door so can get outside. I'm pretty sure he sleeps all day, but every once in awhile he does zoomies outside when we're home. Anyone have any advice? We like to take Jake everywhere so this is going to drive us all stir-crazy!

We did this with Jake's food when we first got him or he would choke, like most others have mentioned. Now we free feed him because he all of a sudden stopped gobbling it all down and eats at his leisure when he's hungry and he doesn't choke. He even chews now! Therefore I don't wet his food anymore because I don't want the wet food to sit all day.

In my experience, Jake does get the idea if he does after something off limits and we say "no, drop it!". It takes multiple times, but one example is his halloween costume. It's stuffed and of course he wanted to eat it at first. After several corrections he got the idea and now it's stored within his reach and he hasn't shown any interest. Just my experience. Edited to add: GBR!

Just remember that these dogs have never, ever slept alone. It's scary! Our boy sleeps in our room most of the time, sometimes on the bed, but he also wanders and sometimes ends up in a spare room or the living room. However, I know the whining would be endless if we actually locked him out! Let that sweetie sleep by you and everyone will get more rest

I'm sure others will chime in with advice, but I just wanted to say how I feel for you. We have a resource guarder too, and sometimes it seems like everything is great and then another growling incident. Good luck. Really hoping for everyone's sake that you can work through this.

I haven't heard about this in regards to dogs, but I know the new retail stem cell therapies cropping up for humans are basically a scam. Honestly I can't imagine the animal treatments are any different. I work in healthcare and just attended a seminar with a speaker who focused on this. His message was that we should be shutting these clinics down because they are not medically certified at all and take advantage of desperate people. Also I can't imagine your insurance would cover it as it's experimental Sorry to be so negative, but I think you'd be better off using that money to make him more comfortable.
