  1. Poor poor thing. It breaks my heart that she was all ready to go be a pet and she never got to. I'm glad she was obviously loved in the prison program.
  2. If you are a Costco member their nubs bones and beef sticks are a favorite here (and both on sale this month- I swear I don't work for Costco ). They are both larger treats, but we usually break up the beef sticks into smaller pieces.
  3. Start feeding at 5:30am for a couple days, then 6am, then 6:30... etc until you get them to where you want them. Jake woke us up every morning at 5 am for the first few weeks and now he barely moves until 8am
  4. Crazy that you posted this- I had this conversation with a couple last weekend about the vaccine. I didn't know it existed, but if we lived where there are a lot of snakes I would probably do it. They said their local humane society offers the shots for like $16 a piece on vaccine days. I'm not worried about the scorpions here...
  5. Also, we used to feed the costco brands (Kirkkland and Nature's domain) before going to raw and it also seemed very good without being too rich.
  6. I am definitely not an expert on this, but it may be that all these "premium" foods are too rich for her. What about Iams green bag?
  7. Can you get him a harness to help him up from laying down?
  8. If it really bothers you and raw is an option, I know our dog's poop got much better and smaller after switching!
  9. He's gorgeous! Don't worry about the gas- chances are he'll always have some, but once you get him on a schedule and he's settled it should be MUCH better. Congratulations!!!
  10. No advice, but I just have to say I chuckled when I saw this title. Only greyhounds!
  11. I am by no means an expert, but I think this sounds pretty normal. She may stop the whining if she has free run of the house at some point. That was our experience. However, Jake is just a big whiner. He whines to get on the bed, get off the bed, get fed, we stopped petting him (the horror!), there is another dog, he wants to annoy me... you get the idea
  12. She is stunning and seems very sweet. I love her fluffy tail!
  13. Is there a Mexican grocery store nearby? Also, a lot of grocery stores can special order these items for you if you just ask. And it's probably way less than $22 for a heart! I've ordered beef heart from a local store before in order to make haggis (not the traditional way, but trying to get lamb heart and liver here is almost impossible!)
  14. Hungry? Or, in my experience, driving you crazy just because they can!
  15. Thanks for the feedback! I think we'll get some of the chicken for him and save the hamburger for us (more fat makes better burgers!)
  16. We are feeding raw, and Jake seems to prefer the chicken. I don't want to give him all ground chicken with bone because I'm afraid that's too much bone. There are two local stores that have boneless chicken leg meat for $1.37 a lb (El Rancho or something like that) and Fry's has ground hamburger for $2 a lb (72-28). Are these okay to feed him (along with bone and organ meat)? My mom asked the butcher at one store and he made a comment about antibiotics in the chicken and so it wouldn't be good for dogs. My first thoughts were (1) Don't they give antibiotics to all chickens, so it would end up in dog food anyway and (2) then why are you selling it for human consumption?! Thanks for your input.
  17. My first thought was dreaming as well. Jake growls in his sleep quite often. Sometimes it is very loud!
  18. So sorry you're dealing with this. Hope the poor girl isn't in pain.
  19. We just got healthy paws a few months ago, and thankfully I haven't needed to use it yet. Jake has a preexisting condition of a scar tissue lump on his wrist area, but other than that I can sleep more soundly at night knowing he's covered!
  20. This happened to Jake once, and it went away in a few days. He's really dark, so it wasn't as noticeable. I would say if it starts to happen every time that would be cause for concern and I would think twice about his donating. Thanks for doing it though! Do your boys get a special treat afterwards? Jake always gets a small fast food hamburger
  21. When we first got Jake, he was on kibble and ate very well. We had to water it down to keep him from choking. He gradually got to the point where we would free feed because he would ignore the food until he was very hungry. I guess he was bored. We switched to raw and again he loved his food- would jump up to get it. Now we're back to him mostly ignoring it. I'm worried about leaving raw food out, and we've already thrown away two lbs of beef ($$$). Is he just bored? Should I not give in and just let him eat when he gets hungry? I also don't want to waste more food. Frustrated...
  22. Jake has a wonky toe that was apparently broken in two places (ouch!) during his track days. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, but I would definitely consider amputation if it did. From what I hear, they recover very well.
  23. We used to take our boy to the dog park, but we quit because he doesn't like dogs jumping on him or getting in his face and he will snap. With a dog as fast as a greyhound, we aren't always going to be close by if that happens. I would recommend doing the activities that 3gretyjoys recommended. We go to the dog park right before closing when it's empty or don't go at all. There are some greyhounds that seem made for the dog park, but ours isn't and I think yours might not be either. I was a little bummed about that at first, but it's just part of his personality and I've come to accept it. He's a diva!
