  1. I'm curious to see the answers here because we also like to hike, but I worry about taking Jake too far. As for water, we have a pool and the first step is all he'll do. We've pushed him in to show him how to get out, and it was not a pleasant experience for either party. There are water loving greys though.
  2. When we first got our boy he would wake us up and the crack of dawn every day. Now he sleeps later than me!
  3. Although it's gross for sure, rabbits eat their own poop as well so it's probably not harmful.
  4. He sounds a lot like our dog. I have only seen him do these kinds of things when we're trying to move him off of the couch or bed or at the vet's when they were taking a bandage off. In the first instance, we have tried to teach off and don't put our hands under him to move him, which seems to be his trigger. For the time when you were changing his bandage, I'm guessing it just hurt. Jake snarled and snapped at the vet once and the vet said he had just reached his limit for what he would endure. I don't think that would be a huge issue for me, because he doesn't know what's going on and why it is hurting.
  5. I just wanted to say good luck. From the way you described it, it sounds almost like he is going after the hurt, whimpering (even just in play) member like a dog would do to another dog. I've seen this happen at the dog park and it's pretty terrifying.
  6. I just wanted to give an update on what we're doing with raw food and make sure this plan sounds nutritionally sound. I've been buying 1lb tubs of both ground chicken with bone and beef with organ meat. I've been feeding more of the chicken with beef every other day or so. I also bought some mixed veggies to add throughout the week. At this point we're still mixing it with kibble to ease the transition and also get rid of it. When we go raw full time 2% of his weight is about 1.5 lbs a day so that is our goal. I haven't been adding anything else. Does this sound okay? He LOVES his new food!
  7. Beautiful girl! Next time I visit my parents in Bellevue I may have to come get a Kaylee hug! More photos please!
  8. I am not at all squeamish... but I have to admit that last photo made me cringe. I'm not judging her, but that is a lot of blood!
  9. We originally said no dogs on the bed. It took Jake all of one week to figure out that the bed was nice! We held out for a few months and with consistency in the "no" and "off" he didn't really push it. When we decided that we wanted him on the bed it actually took some convincing because he knew he wasn't supposed to! I guess my point is that they can learn. There are nights when I wish he wasn't on there (freezing cold on a small slice of bed...) but most of the time we love being able to cuddle with him. It's definitely a personal choice. He has been growly a couple times when DH rolled on top of his head, but wouldn't we all growl at that?
  10. I hate to say it, but this is my main concern... I probably don't spend that a month on groceries That's why I'm trying to figure out something else like maybe feeding raw chicken leg quarters and grinding meat... Also I know Hobe meats has a dog food http://hobemeats.com/products/all-natural-pet-food that is a little less. You may want to check it out, but I don't think it's complete.
  11. Just to keep your spirits up... our Jake has a scar tissue bump on his leg that will never go away. We've had it biopsied and there was no sign of cancer. It is a probable track injury to his tendon and when he injured it again the scar tissue area grew. Pretty scary but now he's fine and we just try to let him heal between runs.
  12. Such a sweet story. Have fun running with your fawn ladies.
  13. Love that tail! And his little tuxedo is very cute- all dressed up for his forever home!
  14. Just like human sisters, there will be fights but at the end of the day they love each other. Congratulations on adopting such loving girls.
  15. I would recommend asking Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption or Arizona Greyhound Rescue as they are both based in Tucson. Since they still race in Tucson I'm sure you can find a grey-savvy vet.
  16. While I don't think you should give up yet, it is important to remember that not all dogs are best suited to being only pets. There would be no shame in returning him and trying again with another greyhound that might be more mellow. Good luck!
  17. I'm thinking about feeding raw and have read some very good stuff on this forum. The one thing I'm still confused about is whether or not you grind the bones up or just give the dog the piece of meat with the bones. All of the places around here that sell raw dog food grind the bones, but obviously it's easier to just give them the whole thing if you guy from the grocery store. The main thing I'm worried about is our boy taking the meat to his bed and getting it everywhere! Thanks!
  18. Can I ask you why you need to use the crate when you're gone? If you don't have cats or some other reason to crate him, I would try letting him have the run of the house while you're gone. Our guy whined and had to be almost forced into the crate after a few days so we tried going without. Now he does wonderfully with full run of the house. Edited to add- I was tying at the same time as the above replies- great minds!
  19. Hi! You are going to love they hounds- I promise! My husband and I also had to wait to adopt a hound until after we bought our house and got settled in. The waiting sucks, but it will be worth it when you get your very own greyhound. Here's another cute photo to hold you over- something to look forward to
  20. Have you tried bribes? Get the coat out and treat, let him smell it and treat, touch him with it and treat, etc...
  21. Do you have the bass up high? I know the vibrating freaks me out if it's way up, so I can imagine a dog really feels it.
  22. We had the same issue with Jake. The trainer at obedience class couldn't even get him to lay down. We tried the tunnel, pushing, begging... What finally worked was that I put a treat in my hand and sat in front of his bed. He stood in front of me on the bed and tried everything he could think of to get the treat. Finally, after about 15 minutes, he got bored and laid down- "yay! good boy!" and treat. The next time it took only 10 minutes, then 5.... you get the idea. He will still only lay down with treats and only on his bed, but we haven't really tried further training. Good luck!
  23. It looks very similar to Jake's histocytoma which eventually dried up an fell off on its own.
  24. I would say start with a dog walker and see how she does. We've never had one and are gone about 8-9 hours a day, but sometimes my husband goes home at lunch. There are times when Jake doesn't want to move and could not be persuaded to walk at such an ungodly hour as noon.
