  2. Good plan. Our GSD, BillieJean ...yes ...the 'opposite name' of your sweet JillyBean .... lived a wonderful 14 ++ years being 'managed' carefully.
  3. I used a 'Pawz' boot when Nixon ripped one of his nails. They're pretty durable and inexpensive.
  4. Agreed! The heat is harder on the dogs than the cold. The past two weeks, we've kept our walks to 20 minutes. At 7 am it was already 24 Celcious, and the dogs were panting after 10 minutes. However, we walk 4-5 km everyday in the fall, spring and winter. We don't use boots, but do have warm coats....we like the ChilliDogs coats. I find the dogs are fine in quite cold temps as long as we're out of the wind. I figure if my hands and face are comfortable, then the dogs should be fine.
  5. They are wicked here this year too. I have yet to find a commercial spray that works on them. At least with a horse, if you're moving fast enough they don't bother you or the horse as much. Some Endurance Riders are using 'Bounce' sheets...under the bridle and tied to the saddle pad / tail. I tried some a couple of weeks ago...both on my horse and under the dogs collars....but did not find they helped. Thanks for the link Derek....off to read edited to say I do have some 'deer fly patches'...which are sticky pieces of paper that the flies will stick to....possibly the same stuff as the 'umbrella lady' uses. I keep one on the back of my riding helmet. There's no way to stick one on the dogs. A friend has a huge fly trap in her yard and she does get hundreds ot of them, but that does not help when you're walking in an area not covered by the trap.
  6. HELLO!!! I am also in KIngston...well... 20 minutes north You don't have enough posts for me to send you a PM. email me dannan at xplornet dot ca
  7. She is a beauty and looks like she's settling in very well!
  8. Thanks Jennifer! Our fabulous vet would agree wholeheartedly.
  9. Give them both time. The new dog has no idea how to act in a household. I also tend to stay ignore little snarls...sometimes I give a little 'AhAh' sound....depends on who is snarling and why. I would muzzle both - or crate - if you are not there to supervise.
  10. Time is your - and your DH - friend. Just be patient and you will have a wonderful friend!
  11. Keep it clean...a toddler-sized sock works well. It should heal up just fine on it's own.
  12. Hope Luke heals up quickly and has no further walking issues. It does sound like there is some kind of negative history between the two vets I would not stich or staple a 3cm wound either, and like to keep punctures open, but that is just me. Having multiple dogs and horses for a gazillion years, you do get a 'feel' for what needs vet attention and what does not.
  13. So sorry for the loss of the handsome Xander. Please give my condolences to his family.
  14. Welcome! And yes...people come to this forum with their agression issues. You could probably go onto a Frenchie chat board and find the same thing. I had a Frenchie attack one of our Dobes in a training class a few years ago. Does that mean all Frenchies are aggressive? NO!!! Nixon came into our home 2+ years ago...at that time we had a quiet 12 yr old GSDx and a high energy 10 yr old PointerX. He blended in with no isues at all. Nixon is very quiet with no space/food agression issues. He is a certified Child Friendly TD. When we lost the GSD last year, we added Ruby. She has more playful energy than Nixon and came to us as a bounce with SA, but that slowly went away. She does have some minor space issues with our Grandkids, but they know enough to leave her alone when she's on her bed. When the Pointer left us suddenly last fall, we took Nigel in as a foster. He's here to stay. now. He is much more high energy and was also bounced due to SA. He also has some minor space issues with the kids if he's on his bed. All the dogs all get along really well....they share beds all the time. We walk every day as a pack with NO problems. We had one incident with Nixon/Nigel fighting over a dropped piece of a cookie.. They were not directly supervised at the time and both had some minor injuries....nothing required a vet's attention, but there was blood involved! A 'normal' dogs skin...more hair/fat... would not have ripped/bled. Since then, we muzzle all the dogs when we're not home, even though there have been no further incidents. Better safe, than sorry. As far as free-feeding...we do have never done it with any dogs. We've owned multiple dogs of varying breeds for 30 years. Most would simply get too fat if the food was left out. You sound very knowledgable and I am glad you're doing lots of research. Now...go look in the 'Cute an Funny' forum for some happy Greyhound stories!!!! He is the one with
  15. St John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program does not require a dog to sit. They may just stand quietly at the handlers side.
  16. Oh Cindy... Your oh-so-handsome Dante knew how much he was loved and cherished. Words cannot express the sadness I am feeling for you and your family. Run free Dante.... Nancy
  17. I would not 'punish' either of them. Dexter is doing what he has always done and Siri was doing what she had to to protect herself from an 'attack'. Thankfully, there were no really serious issues. I'd either gate them in different rooms or muzzle both when you are not there to supervise. And now ... we need to see some pictures!!!
