Food Grade Diatemaceous Earth
BatterseaBrindl replied to dbullwinkel's topic in Food and dietary discussion
Nixon was dusted with it before I brought him home. I was also supposed to feed it to him for internal parasite control, which I did not do. However, I am not a huge believer that it works, especially for hookworms....they're pretty persistant little critters! -
Brand New Dog Growling At Older Dog
BatterseaBrindl replied to a topic in Training and Behavior discussion
Nixon is the most laid-back Grey ever. He is a certified child-friendly therapy dog and tolerates just about anything humans can do to him. However...if he gets stepped on by one of the others (ushally Nigel) he does give a little growl. Even if they've barely touched him, he will let out a short, quiet 'please don't touch me' growl. I never disipline him for that. -

I wouldn't spend hundreds on a behaviourist just yet. JJ has only been with you for a couple of weeks. As I understand it, when the vet came in to do the exam he was already extremely aggitated and agressive over the Tech trying to do his nails. Why not take him back to the clinic... just walk in, stay a minute, say hello, give him a treat and leave....a couple times a week? I know the clinic would be fine with this. I drop in with my guys all the time. I would work on positive reinforcement in dealing with the behavior issues. Lots of praise and treats. I use tiny little Milkbones. They are made for tiny dogs because I don't want mine to gain weight from giving them normal size bones. It's just enough for one bite but it's a treat. Try the PB in the muzzle. Do one nail. Treat and praise. If you only get on nail done a day, so be it. ...It WILL get better. If Karen/Camp Greyhound has a guard in stock she can have it to you by the weekend. Just from the brief descriptions that you give there does seem to be a common thread, trust. Your boy doesn’t know you enough to trust you. It also seems he may also not have a lot of confidence. What I strongly suggest is things that build trust and his confidence. Two things that I have done with fosters that exhibit some of the same issues is: Classes are a good idea, but there are no Greyhound specific classes/trainers here. Heck...There are less than a dozen Greyhounds in our entire extended community! I can recommend an excellent trainer that we had for our last dog-agressive Dobe. Now...SMILE and BREATHE!!! Nancy

Nail Trimming Nightmare
BatterseaBrindl replied to antisense's topic in Training and Behavior discussion
You've had some very good advice. Take it slowly...one nail at a time. The PB frozen into the muzzle is a good idea. Not sure where you can find stool guards up here, though. We also use a Dremmel....It was the only thing our Dobes would tolerate We have just the small rechargable one. The one the vets use is HUGE. And very noisy. Make sure you change the sandpaper frequently, and have it fully charged. -

Took Nixon 2 weeks to really get the stairs. We 'helped' him a few times the first couple of days, but then just left him alone and one day he came up. Going down took longer...we helped him for another week or so.

Agreed! Greyhounds CAN sit. Some just choose not to do it Nixon was pretty easy to teach. Stairs were much harder for him Ruby came to us already knowing...she loves to sit! Nigel was the most difficult Took him about 3 weeks of twice daily practice for him to really 'get it' consistently. George's 'tuck and fold their bum under' method worked for both boys, with a treat held way above their head. The secret to getting Nigel to sit was to have his back end VERY close to the edge of a thick dog bed, so that when you tucked his bum under, it was not as much of a drop until his bum was down. Another issue I had is that Nigel is quite long, and I am rather small, so I had issues with my arms not being long enough to do the tuck and then hold a treat really high over his head.

Best High Value Treats?
BatterseaBrindl replied to antisense's topic in Training and Behavior discussion
Nixon is not realy motivated by food either. Thankfully he's a real easy. laid back boy. Real meat or anything with peanut butter on it would be his favorites. . -

My guys had no real issues with Kirklands Lamb & Rice, but we made the switch to raw several months ago and will never go back to kibble.

So sorry ...we've been in this position more than once. You have to consider her quality of life.... How much pain is she in? Does she eat willingly? "Better a day too early, than a minute too late".
