macoduck
Off topic of the fire story, Don, but it reminded me of when I did a pre-adoption home visit for an ibizan hound group. The applicant had previously owned ibizans, so of course she knew everything. The gas stove had control knobs on the front (rather than on the back raised panel like my electric one.) When I pointed out how easy it would be for any dog to get burned or burn the house down. "I always stay in the kitchen when I'm cooking" was the response. I glanced out the window at a pile of beer cans beside the scene of a previous night's party. Uh huh. I'm sure she stayed inside instead of getting drunk outside around the fire pit. Jerilyn
I know someone whose doodle did exactly this. Damage was limited to the kitchen but was significant. So many people say gas ranges are so much better that electric, but this is one reason I prefer electric, the knobs are in the back. LazyGrey
It's awful to hear how irresponsible people are and I appreciate your post. Too many people out there who really shouldn't have pets or children! I am so careful with anything left on my counters or with in reach of my dog. Knives, scissors, plants, pills, anything he might try to eat or drink or pull off the counter and the stove is top of the list. Ark has already stood up on the stove to sniff what might be there...fortunately, there were no burners on. When I open the over door, I say HOT!! and he moves away, when I cook on the stove, if he is in the kitchen, I say HOT, OWIE!! He knows now, but I am stilI very cautious of possible accidents. Making the kitchen off limits is not possible for me, but not a bad idea if you can do it.

MerseyGrey
We are learning this rapidly. Dixie is a food thief and despite being smaller than Buddy (who would run his nose along the kitchen counter but who never took food to my knowledge), she took a half kilo bag of muesli - with raisins - and polished it off one afternoon. We are starting to realise that there is dog proofing and lurcher proofing and they are not necessarily the same thing 3 Quote Buddy Molly 🌈 5/11/10-10/10/

This was the first thing I thought of when I read this. Taylor got a bad rap. The cat is the one who turned on the stove. 2 Quote Camp Broodie. Houndtime
We actually had this happen when we had a German Shepherd. And, it was an older electric stove top with buttons on the side of the top. I left brownies to cool on the back of the stove, and went to work. The dog must have leaned on the top to get to the brownies and pushed, somehow, on the buttons. My daughter came from school and the house was full of smoke. The brownies became bricketts.l Quote Irene Ullmann w/Flying Odin and Mama Mia in Lower Delaware Angels Brandy, John E, American Idol, Paul, Fuzzy and Shine Handcrafted Greyhound and Custom Clocks http://www.houndtime.com Zoom Doggies-Racing Coats for Racing Greyhounds
