What Is The Best Pain Med After A Dental Extraction?

Recommended Posts

Is Lexie having major extractions? Poor girlie. Aiden lost four upper molars, he was sent home with Clavamox (for infection) and Deramaxx (pain) and did just fine. Lexie will too :grouphug

I wish I could remember what Ryder was on....he was completely stoned for a couple days. I can guarantee he didn't feel a thing but he had his big upper molars removed, which was a traumatic yank on his poor face. The stoned attitude I could have dealt without because he didn't know which way was up, that's the only good thing about it. I'll check the name of it at home if I can find the label. Which of her teeth need pulling?

Ack, I was hoping they wouldn't be the ones! In my experience those are the worst ones (I've been fortunate not to have encountered an upper canine to be pulled which affects the nasal cavity). You are right to hope she's not in pain. I'll get back to you later today if I can find it!

She'll be fine, but it'll be a bit of an owie. And it's ALWAYS worse for the owner!

Most clinicans prescribe a NSAID and Tramadol to go home. Your vet should do nerve blocks so recovery won't be painful and they also often give a rimadyl injection intra op so that's on board too. To be honest if the teeth are already pretty diseased it makes for easierless painful extractions.

ok thanks...two upper molars

Molars or the 4th pre-molar-----big difference!

Has Lexie taken Tramadol before? If not, you might want to opt for the nsaid, if given a choice. Some greyhounds - who are sensitive to opiod pain meds - can have an adverse reaction, with pacing, panting and an inability to settle down. This is not what you want to have post-op.

Sending good thoughts for a swift recovery to Miss Lexie! Hope this won't impact her talking and singing too much. :)

When Sallie lost all her upper molars (both sides) and some other teeth, she was on tramadol for a couple of days, and I am pretty sure she got a rimadyl shot at the vet's. She did just fine, was mostly back to normal after about 48 hrs.

This is very true. Ry got his very back little ones taken out that were just hanging on for dear life. I finally put two and two together about why he shakes his head at mach 1 often. He barely had any pain in comparison to the other big chompers he had taken out! And no more mach 1 shakes repeatedly.
